I recently installed Veracrypt on an entire company’s laptops, Version 1.0f-2

It is the full encryption which requires the password entered on PC power on

It is a HP 8440p Elitebook, running Windows 7 professional SP1

The MD (it had to be the MD!) now cannot logon

It states incorrect password whenever the password is entered

I have booted from the rescue disk created for this laptop and tried

    1) Restore key data
    2) Restore Veracrypt boot loader
    3) Permanently Decrypt
Still incorrect password, it is the password that I have given her originally and she has been using it for only a few weeks,

    Can anybody help?

    Do you need anymore info?

    Thanks for your help

    Hi,

I see that you already have done the usual trouble shooting steps.
Since you have the rescue disk, entering the correct password should boot the system since the header contained in the rescue disk can not change and it is identical to what the drive had when you encrypted it the first time.

Are you using a US keyboard or an international keyboard?

As I said above, the rescue disk contains the original VeraCrypt header that is garanteed to work provided that the original password is used. So, your issue has only two possible explanations:

    • either the password was changed after the rescue disk was created and you are trying to use this new password and not the one that was set during the creation of the rescue disk
    • or there is an issue in the keyboad which make some keys not giving the same value as before.

If you are in the first case, you need to use the original password associated with the rescue disk (if the rescue disk was created during the encryption process, then the password is the one that you used when encrypting the machine the first time).

For the second case, I added in version 1.13 the possibility to show the typed password during boot. This helps identify any keyboard issue that caused keys not working or sending wrong value.

To try to check if this the case, I propose to you to boot using a rescue disk created using version 1.13 and to use the show password feature to display what it typed on the keyboard. Of course, you must not try to boot using this 1.13 rescue disk: it will be just a way to check the keyboard behavior.

I have prepared an VeraCrypt 1.13 Rescue Disk ISO file tha you can use: http://sourceforge.net/projects/veracrypt/files/VeraCrypt%201.13/VeraCrypt_1.13_Sample_RescueDisk.iso/download

As I explained above, it is just for displaying the password to verify that what you see is what you expect to have (F5 is used to show/hide password).

I hope with these elements you'll be able to find the origin of the issue.

Thank you for all of your help

It turns out that the keyboard had stopped functioning correctly

A USB keyboard has fixed the problem

    Thanks again for your help

The show password is an excellent feature for initial setup and testing

    +1 rep
