Is it possible to create a hidden volume for my Google Drive File Stream
(G:) drive? If so, how? My intent is to hide the (G:) drive and require a
password to mount it, thus making it inaccessible to the average thief who
might steal my laptop. (I am not concerned about encrypting data in it,
which would simply be a byproduct of creating a hidden, password protected
volume.)
My laptop is deliberately set up with no password required to boot Windows
7 Professional, to encourage anyone who steals it to open a browser to get
online, at which point I could track its location and hopefully recover it
with software that does this. So I do not want to encrypt my entire
hardrive and require decryption to boot. I want to allow a thief to get
online, and use hidden volumes to protect my data.
I have my important personal files in a hidden volume (and back them up to
a personal Google Drive account with Google Backup and Sync). As a
distraction, I keep a folder with less improtant files on my desktop that
a thief could open.
I use a Google G Suite account with Drive File Stream for work files.
Right now, any thief could open my Google Drive File Stream (G:) drive and
access everything in it. (My G Suite Drive files are backed up in my
laptop's encrypted partition, and on an external hard drive, so I could
reconstruct everything in it, but I do not want unauthorized persons to
access it.)
Google Backup and Sync syncs two file copies: one in my personal Drive and
one in the hidden volume on my laptop. When I mount the hidden volume I
can sync everything in it to my personal Drive account. But Drive File
Stream does not sync files, and no files are stored in (G:), only cache
files that reference the actual files stored in Drive. I'm not sure if
this caching would make a difference in creating a hidden volume. Can I
just select (G:) and make it a hidden volume?
Hmm. When I open VeraCrypt to create a new volume, G: does not appear in the list of drives.
