can't get past create file on Debian

It seemed to install just fine using the gui-64 installer on a Debian 11 OS, but try to create the initial container .. It would go about doing its thing, but right at the end would err .. the file would seem to have been created, but not mountable, again, an error. This happens regardless of file system, cipher(s), digests, options, file size. Any ideas?
