It says operatiion failed due to one of the following:
Incorrect password
Incorrect volume PMI number
Incorrect PRF (hash)
Not a valid volume
I've used the same steps as always. I checked and rechecked the password...it is correct.
I tried mounting using the backup header embedded in the volume, but once it's mounted, it says I must format the volume before use, as if there's nothing on it.'
What should I do?
When I check the volume properties, it says 271 gig total, only 98MB used. There's over 100 gig of data on the device.

Mount the volume again and try data recovery software R-Studio against the mounted volume to try to rebuild your filesystem and recover your missing files.
It sounds like the filesystem within the mounted volume has been corrupted and is no longer recognized by Windows.
If you have another drive, clone the VeraCrypt unmounted drive to another drive and attempt your recovery efforts against the clone so you do not damage the current volume. This will provide you the ability to make multiple attempts at recovery without risking the original volume.

R studio problems is a different issue. Did you download a free (useless) version?...I would find a torrent of EaseUS recovery...there are plenty of them.
I second the previous poster - only mess around with a copy!..

This is exact;y the advise I needed. Found a torrent for a registered version of EaseUS Data Recovery Technician. Not even a crack, or a keygen. It took awhile, but I was able to recover the unencrypted files that were already on the volume when I encrypted it, since I didn't opt to overwrite the partition with random data. Only my most recent files are lost, and I still have most of them elsewhere.
Thank you kindly for all your help.
I appreciate you giving me the advise without making me feel like an idiot.

But, when I recover the files, won't the be encrypted? If I put them in a new volume, as long as I mount the volume with the right encryption key, I should be able to access them, correct?

The reason I recommended R-Studio was due to other VeraCrypt forum members had the best results in recovering their files using this specific software when hardware error or user deletion had occurred.
With the volume mounted, the recovery of any files will be just like normally mounting the volume and the files existed.
Try running R-Studio from the programs menu by clicking the Windows icon in the lower left-hand corner and scroll to the R-Studio application.

I got it done with EaseUS Data Recovery. If found 65,000 files of which I only cared to recover about 600. I'm through playing around with encryption. Thanks for your great advice, Alex and Enigma2. I'll write it off as a learning experience. Now I know how to clone a drive, and recover lost files.

R Studio won't even run. I just downloaded and installed it, and when I click on the shortcut it created, it can't even find its own installation.
