Hello Uel, That's great news about the CLI installer - it's a wonderful safeguard in case the GUI installer doesn't work for someone (albeit, not nearly as pretty but plenty functional :D). Attached is a text document with the specs from the problematic system. Hopefully you can find the meaningful information in all of that output. I went a little overboard but figured it's probably better to have too much than not enough. Cheers, newt -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Tuesday, September 22, 2009, 10:38:38 AM, Uel wrote: UA> Newt, UA> The CLI installer is being work on now. Newt, The CLI installer is being work on now. This is just a timing question more than anything. Can you post the specs on that machine. I have new code in the LILO department. Please try this setup if and report back. Especially if you have multiple OS's installed... I want to see how this plays along. Thanks |

Hello, I have particular machine (graphics card) that does not play with vesa driver and last I tried I could not see anything once X started. Anyone with a similar card would be dead-in-the-water if there is not an alternative installer (CLI). I'm sure it's already planned but if not then I would definitely vote for an alternative installer - or a way to swap video drivers prior to X starting. Maybe our grub prolems would go away with a new grub binary from a later svn? I know we will get there, I have seen a lot of progress so far, i'm just pointing out the last deficiencies that i have ran into. from what I understand, grub should not use "vga=" flags. We should be using the "set gfxpayload" argument instead. For whatever reason, our configuration does not produce a bootsplash with that only, so in that case, you would have to use lilo. I'm still working on lilo and it's problems, however, keep in mind, that this is an area where most distros's installers fail anyway. Our goal is to present the user with the OS's located in the system. Most installers I have seen dont even do this, so we'll get it there, and my goal is to make it work, it'll just take a little longer to debug it. |

I think the GUI installer is looking great, but there are still problems with the bootloader that I think need to be fixed before a public release. Grub is unusable on most of my hardware because of the GPT partition table it throws an error and refuses to install. On another box with ati chipset it says it installs correctly but on reboot gives an out of bounds error that is supposed to be fixed in a later svn version. On a different box that requires 800x600 to boot I get a black screen because VGA=791 is hardcoded into the config. LILO gives me error default image does not exist Are we really thinking of going public without a CLI installer? We have found a few new bugs in A1.31: when installing as ext2 or ext3 there results a time error in the superblock. We have fixed it by moving the hwclock setting to near the top of the rc.S init script. I have sent Uel a revised rc.S to fix the problem. vasmcc is finally fixed.........:) qtscriptgenerator package still not getting installed. In the installer I am getting an error thrown right after package installation and before bootloader section starts. In A1.29 and A1.30 it was an out of bounds error it changed in A1.31 to something else I don't recall but occured at the same location. I finally had to use the A1.28 init.gz with computer unplugged to get a successful install. Thats all for now. I totally blew this one. After sending this I remembered Uelsk8s telling me on IRC about the udev. I even wrote it down having it setting right in front of me. One of those moments I guess. Looks like 32 is up now and I read that I don't have to manually install udev, great, I'm all over that as soon as I finish this. |

Hello, Here's my small list of notes from 1.31, r821: -kde language packs were not installed -using vxconf, I am still prompted for keyboard layout (us/102 is default). HOWEVER, even though I chose to use default it in fact used what I was using in the installer. This is definitely a step in the right direction. -overlap issue on non-bootsplash screen still exists along left edge (text overlaps frame) -I like the new login theme, but the vector 'V' came in bobbling. It looks a bit funny. I think simply replacing the 'K' with our 'V' would suffice - no bobbling effects. Also, if we're replacing that 'K' then how about replacing the panel 'K' as well. -in KDM, usernames on the dark gray background are hard to read Cheers, newt -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Friday, September 18, 2009, 6:09:43 AM, you wrote: UA> SOHO-1.31 ISO is up UA> Please use the 1.30-CD2 iso with this one UA> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ UA> Come build with us! Ok... First things first... I wanted to try to implement ext4 into the installer after this one went up. Seems you missed one more setting in the kernel config CONFIG_LSF must be enabled in the kernel because ext4 supports hughe files, so the initrd wont mount a ext4 partition. I gotta be able to mount it in the initrd to use it as a target. Bootsplash works for me now (whohooooo) Overall theme looks better (headed in the right direction) VXconf is working as expected (bypassing language settings when already chosen @ install time) Locales from the installer are migrated correctly into the desktop. ANNOYANCE: (maybe limited to my virtual environment) su <password> Returns "No protocol specified Unable to open display 0.0" And of course, no gui apps can be ran from terminal. I think we're getting there guys... @ Uel. I need you to rebuild the kernel and enable CONFIG_LFS |

This is the udev error we talked about in IRC The only way to fix in 1.30 is to manually delete rc.udev and reinstall the udev package Fortunately there is a delta to 1.31 up already On Sep 18, 2009, at 3:16 AM, Masta MCF <mas...@gm...> wrote: > 1.30 r-815 > This time I was able to get past the "no OS found" issue. 1.30 r-815 This time I was able to get past the "no OS found" issue. Good job on fixing that, and thanks. A new issue arrives with both LILO and GRUB. LILO: Seems during installation it is installed successfully. Reboot the machine and you do get a LILO screen to select OS. Choose the default and it will boot showing the verbose screen (graphical with scrolling text) instead of the silent mode (progress bar). Then it gets booting so far and ends up with, "The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: ..." and so on. We're also presented with option to enter root password to run fsck and make fixes, or use ctrl-d to proceed with normal startup. Ctrl-d just reboots and we simply cycle back to the error. I've tried manual fix, no luck there. GRUB: Splash boots in proper silent mode and progressbar shows. That is until we get to the same superblock / root-filesystem error. Boot Splash: I can see the issue of the text on the left side not fitting into the image window properly. I'll work this :) . |
