I tryied this newest alpa on two computers. One installed with little issue. The other, a quad core q6600 @ 2.4 ghz with ati radeon 3600 series locks up when hitting the next button on the selecting keyboard settings screen. If there is more information I can give you let me know. The only minor glitch I hit was at the ncurses resolution selection stage - the bottom of the box was overwritten by the load message for the trackpoint. Other than that, the install went without a hitch. MC seemed to work fine with the txz packages. Is there a package for 4.7.0pre3 available? I'd like to test using shell link, which I use a lot, and which has been broken in the recent svn versions I've tried. I notice that once installed, MC reverts to 4.6.2Pre1, not the version available during the install. All the X eye-candy works for me with this alpha - first time it has. I've got wobbly windows, workspaces on a cube, all very smart! The only thing I did have a bit of a problem with was playing films - I was getting some stuttering and odd speedups in places. May just be the Intel driver - it hasn't been good in recent versions of Xorg. I also found that after maximising the movie player (Dragon?), I lost all the window controls and ended up with X becoming unresponsive - had to use CTRL-ALT-BackSpace to kill X and restart it. I had to fiddle with mixer controls to get sound, but I've had to do that with most distros installed on the T61 - it looks as though the Alsa drivers for Intel HDA are not all there yet. Once I'd configured the switches (for some reason, speaker is never ticked), selected speaker, then unmuted the speaker option, sound works. I noticed that the Vcpufreq selection in VasmCC does nothing. I've also not tested Grub - I have a Grub legacy install that I use, so I skipped the boot loader and manually added the SOHO alpha to my /boot/grub/menu.lst. Other than that, looks very good indeed. I could almost grow to like KDE 4... paul. |

Hello All, I've finally had a chance to try out the new 1.40txz ISO with updated installer, and I must say this looks like a winner on my troublesome nvidia 5200 video card system. X started normally without any unnecessary user configuration, and I confirmed that the 'nv' driver was being used in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Overall, the install was painless and without many issues (a few minor but nothing major). Below are my notes: Installer: -initial installation media finding time was about 45+ seconds, with a many-second mouse freeze -subsequent 'search again' button presses were only 5-10 seconds each -the 'search again' button still kill the 2nd disc partitioning option ('use existing partitions') -when choosing partitions to use for system my drives show in reverse order (hdd, hdb, hda). I would expect them to be in alpha-order (hda, hdb, hdd, etc). -partition sizes show in Gparted differ from partition sizes show by Installer by enough to be noticeable. hda1 hda2 hda3 hda4 hda5 hda6 Gparted 96.97g 3.23g ---- 6.98g 454.94m 502m Installer 104g 3.46g ---- 7.49g 0.48g 526m It's not totally unrealistic but they are significantly different. Probably a 1000_vs_1024 thing??? -Flash of black when scroller starts -Grub detected my VL 6 STD install and added it to boot options (but problems - see below) First Boot: -Grub lists three options (soho, soho-recoverymode, 6Std) but upon choosing 6Std I get: Error: You need to load the kernel first -I tried moving the kernel line up the boot option order but then just received: Booting a command list Error: File not found. Login: -VL graphic wobbles still - not as much as before but a bit still. KDE: -Opera/wpa_gui/vburn-iso/browser all missing icons in KDE menu -VasmCC still needs updating in Filesystem, and Vpackager does not start This last comment is just an observation: During the installation routine I notice (in htop) that the scroller uses 5-6% CPU and 1% mem_usage throughout the entire install. Also, each time the scroller cycles around the CPU usage jumps to ~40% for several seconds. In the end, the scroller is the 2nd or 3rd most cpu time used process running. How this affects overall install time/speed, I don't know but thought I'd mention it. If the overall package installation time can be reduced significantly by "adjusting" the scroller I think it would be worth it, but if the overall improvements would be minor then no bother. Back to the Grub/VL6STD issue: I installed lilo to my STD partition bootsector (as a safeguard) and was able to use the grub commandline to chainload to lilo, and lilo was able to boot STD fine. In the end, none of this is a major issue or a show-stopper. This install was certainly the best I've tried. The VL GRUB/KDM/LOGIN themes look the best they ever have. There does not seem to be a KDE theme implemented yet, but I'm sure it'll be nice when it's done. Great job to all!!! Cheers, newt |

Hello All, More notes from install: 1.39, r879: -disc partitioning options wavered: first time there both options available (this is correct), clicked back, clicked search again, clicked next - this time only 'Help me resize my partitions' option was available. Note: I already have partitions sda1/reiser, sda2/reiser, sda3/swap -restarted installer: If I do not ever click 'search again' then both partitioning options remain available. It has something to do with clicking the 'search again' button -restarted installer: this time I started off by clicking the 'search again' button three times before moving forward and only got the one disc partitioning option ('Help me resize my partitions'). -restarted installer: just clicked next through the first couple pages and was able to use existing paritions -flash of black when scroller starts -I did not play with the bootloader much other than to put lilo on sector and grub on mbr; both worked out fine with default values M0E: I didn't notice your email about lilo timeout working until after this install. I'll be sure to play with the bootloader installation section on my next test. Cheers, newt |

I know the grub package just got updated. This may be related to the upgrade. @ Newt Please update your installer source/binary and try now for the lilo timeout. I think I got it fixed. |

Hello, Notes from first boot of 1.38(non-txz): First boot: -Grub failure: "error: You need to load the kernel first. Failed to boot default entries. Press any key to continue..." -both entries have insmod ext2 -both entries request that kernel comes first -after making kernel first, it complained about device uuid; luckily I had installed lilo to sector and was able to use grub command to chainload lilo which booted the system Cheers, newt |

Nothing I can do about the reiser4 option in gparted. The kernel does not support it, but we seem to have libraries for it, which explains the option being available. The kernel copying debug line is just that...debugging. Can you make sure it's getting installed to the correct place? I've checked here and it does copy it to /boot, not /. Let me know if you find otherwise. I will address the lilo label issues soon, as well as the timeout issue. The next button issue is kind of a side effect to a safety net that I put in place there. The button becomes active once you click on a bootloader option. the kernel line is supposed to point to the actual kernel name.. I did that on purpose. Keeps me from generating double entries, and getting invalid filenames. About grub. You will not find the resolution choice in grub.cfg. It does not go there. Look in /etc/default/grub The background image will stay at 800x600 unless a bigger one is provided. Grub does not resize the image. All the grub configuration is automatically generated. I only control the vga mode, and time out. HTH |

Hello, Just some installer notes. I will file these as bugs later: 1.38 (non-txz), r869: -reiser4 is available in gparted but fails to work -at cd switching time: -Step9.install_kernels.117: Installing /mnt/source/isolinux/kernel/sata as /mnt/target/vmlinuz-2.6.27.34 -The actual location is /mnt/target/boot/ Bootloader: -'next' button issue persists (either going back to bootloader page or on fail_but_remain_at_page) -both bootloader config files point to the actual full kernel name rather than the symlink 'vmlinuz' - just an observation Lilo: -'initrd =' and 'read-only' are missing from safe mode option -timeout has no effect -any label that is 15 characters and ends with '-cli' cause a lilo failure. Is there a way to make 15 character labels ending in '-cli' unusable? -points to Grub: -nowhere in grub.cnf do I see where the resolution is set. I see where the background is chosen based on the user's resolution choice, but no where is the actual framebuffer resolution set. Seems like I recall this being explicitly set in previous testing. -the background image always stays with the silent-800x600.jpg; is that supposed to be that way? -recovery mode does an 'insmod ext2'; is that supposed to be there? Cheers, newt |

Some quick notes on installing A1.38 using installer version 867: First I install from iso images on the hd using a pendrive to boot the init.gz image. This has worked quit well and has saved me tons of cd's. The good news is the installer correctly picks up the iso images once again which has been a problem last few installs with previous versions of the installer. The bad news is the package install order seems to be messed up as the base packages were done then it jumped right into the kde4 packages then X11 packages then dev packages this resulted in a mess at boot up as i believe x11 packages and kde4 packages should be last as was done in previous installs. The other thing is that when jumping to second iso a filemanager screen comes up but is no where close to where second iso is which in my case is in the /mnt directory which is where the file dialog should default to open too. This could be very confusing to newbies to the system. So suggest the file dialog open to /mnt make it easier to find second iso. Last problem is grub the default installs (base and recovery) have some formatting issues that leave base unbootable. the base in grub.cfg has the vga= line cut off so it reads vga= instead of vga=791. Once I edit that base is once bootable again. There are other formatting issues there but that seems the critical issue. Other than those few issues we seem to be progressing nicely!..........thanks again M0E for your very hard work!!! Testers please keep those reports coming!!! The more reports the faster it gets debugged! Importing Users: Hi M0E. OK, so you're already aware of the importing users issues. If there's anything I can do to further assist in this, just let me know. I did want to clear up a note though. If one uses the installer or vector control center (or vasm) the importing wasn't an issue. It was only an issue when one used some other application, such as the KDE4 tools to create a user account. It was only this round that I ran into issues of importing users all together. the 36 iso didn't have an issue of importing installer created accounts. Hope that narrows down to something useful. Ksplash: Hi Newt. Yes the bobbling logo is intentional. It was just something quickly put together for a trial run. I previously had it fading in as the other icons do, but for some reason the theme would not work due to that particular animation file. Possibly a setting I have in GIMP that's not quite right for that file when saving. I suspect that, because I made the bobbling one via Krita and it works. Don't worry though, that will not be the choice of animation for the splash, I am currently working on a couple others that should be more suitable. Suggestions / ideas are welcome. ISO regular TLZ and TXG: I saw really no difference in performance of these two ISOs. The only thing I actually saw that was different, was how K3B speedily calculated the MD5SUM. Outside of that, everything was pretty much the same. I didn't do actual timings, but typically if nothing is noticeable naturally, then there's no need for calculations. As for installation, it was pretty much the same results, everything went in order and there was no difference as to whether something worked in one and not the other, etc. |

The installer is crashing when creating a new user because of the netdev group issue. It attemps to add the user to a group that does not exist. As a temporary work around, I have added code to create this group before the user creation window even shows up, but this really needs to be addressed in the vlconfig2 package. The no kernel problem is related to the switching of config files... I'm brushing that out now. |

:( Installer looked ok, but failed to create a user (I didn't import, since I couldn't remember the user name I'd been using for the alphas...). At that point the installer fell over. I had skipped the bootloader install (already have Grub legacy installed). When I attempted to boot, I found no vmlinuz and no kernel modules had been installed. One observation - moving to .txz packages will break MC's ability to view package contents. The svn version of MC that is being used by Slackware is badly broken - from my point of view, the most important problem with it being the fact that Fish no longer works properly. I use Fish far too much to be able to move to any version of MC that doesn't support it properly. This one is far more broken on my hardware than most of the ones I've tried recently. paul. Looks like we're back to having operating systems listed in the selection page of the installer again. This is great, no "Tab0" filled with empty space. Grub: Installs ok according to installer, but upon first reboot I am presented with the grub command line "sh:grub>" . Ran through installer again. Selected Lilo instead of grub. Lilo returns an error. No vmlinuz Importing users: I did have an issue with importing users made via the kde4 system control. However I was always able to import my "Masta" user account which was originally created via installer. This time, I am not able to import any users. Fails and says to read output, which simply says failed (I'll try running log from terminal on next install attempt/test to hopefully get better output on this particular part). That's it for this testing session. |

Hello M0E, Okay, I gave both methods a shot and they both worked out fine this time. I can't explain why the russian language pack was not installed earlier, but everything went as expected my last 2 tests. I guess unless anyone else runs across that kind of an issue we can just ignore my previous findings - everything seems to be installing correctly now. Can you check if clicking on the language packs manually and individually makes a difference? I will try the massive selection toggle buttons. |

Hello M0E, I just booted up KDE and double-checked in the Language/Region section, and Russian is the language that is missing. I noticed it was not installed because I was watching the gambas console during this install step and noticed only three packs were installed. I did a custom install with all packages selected on every screen. I always play with the select_all/unselect_all buttons during each package selection screen along with individually clicking the selections, but in the end I make sure all packages are selected. I wish I had an explanation of why it was not installed. Best I can do it redo the install with same basic scenario: 1.35, r844. I'm using 1.34-cd2 if that makes any difference. Could you tell me what type of install you did? I just did a custom install and selected each language pack individually and it did install all of them. I'm curious to find out why yours failed. |

Hello All, Just some notes from a vmware install: 1.35, r844: -only 3 language packs installed (es/fr/de), not the 4th -lilo timeout still not working -read-only option missing from -cli (safe mode) option again (it had been working before) -disabled 'next' button issue persists on bootloader (on failed install or by going 'back') KDM LOGIN: -vector 'V' bobbles on login - is this intentional? KDE: -vburn menu option still not working -still missing some menu icons (opera, wpa_gui, vburn, browser, etc) VASMCC: -cups fails to start from vasmcc -samba swat fails to start from vasmcc -bootloader option seems to be missing grub -format option missing some filesystems (jfs, ext4, etc) -cfdisk improperly identifies ext4 partitions as ext3 -bootsplash themes seem out-dated -vpackager does nothing -vcpufreq does nothing -hardinfo does nothing -gslapt does nothing -in general, vasmcc looks to need some updating for VL6 SOHO Cheers, newt |

Hello M0E and all, 'gui 2' gets me access to the shell prior to X starting which is what I've wanted to do - thanks M0E. It doesn't seem like the 'nv' driver is built into the initrd (X would not start), but 'fbdev' is and it works for this card. I will clean up some space on one of this systems hard drives and probably attempt the install later tonight. Thanks again for the 'gui 2' option. Just thinking out loud here: I'm certain someone else will run into a similar problem. I wonder, is there some kind of easy solution that would allow a user to start X using different drivers, if needed, without having to manually edit files and start X. I'm thinking of some kind of basic script that could be run which would start X using a different graphics driver (e.g. ./gui-fbdev.sh, ./gui-vesa.sh, ./gui-nv.sh), and those scripts would execute the 'Xorg' binary using a predefined xorg.conf file (e.g. xorg.conf-fbdev, xorg.conf-vesa, or xorg.conf-nv, respectively). The scripts could be held in /root such that if a user needed to use them they could 'gui 2', login as 'root', and run the script directly - and away they go with the installer. @ Newt Try booting the CD or ISO into text mode by parsing these arguments at boot time "gui 2" Without quotes. Log in as root, and look in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to see which driver is being used for X I wonder if we have the "nv" driver built into the initrd... you might try that. |
