I booted to VL-Light on same machine, set up LILO with vga=normal, and set SOHO B1.6 to boot to TUI. Now I can run vxconf without it locking up. When I try "startx" it drops back to text mode with errors. Log files attached. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Sunday 08 November 2009 08:26:15 Roy Stefanussen wrote: > B1.6 on laptop with Intel: > > Installer fixed. B1.6 on laptop with Intel: Installer fixed. I took a custom install as I didn't burn the second disc. Clicked "I don't have it" when it asked for disc 2. Now problem with installed system. It locked up hard at point of configuring X-windows. Boot to TUI and run vxconf gives same result. Hello, I thought I'd try the latest B1.4 but have run into the same problems that do not allow me to continue the installation. The problems that I run into are: 1) The gbr2 installer that starts automatically cannot find the install source. It hangs/stalls indefinitely and I have to actually kill the process to get it to quit. 2) Running the installer from the IDE cannot find my ISOs which sit at the root of an ntfs partition. The good part is that the installer never hangs/stalls, but I cannot actually continue the installation. I decided I would try mounting my ntfs partition to make sure the ISOs are sitting at the root of it, and determined that the installer environment (initrd?) cannot mount ntfs partitions. I get an error message describing missing modules and that I should try 'modprobe fuse' first. So then I tried 'modprobe fuse' and received a similar error message about missing modules. The best I can guess is that my problems with the IDE installer not finding the installation ISOs (#2) is due to this ntfs-mounting problem. Did something change between B1.2 and B1.3 regarding ntfs/modules/fuse/etc? However, the other issue (#1) is a different beast. I cannot determine why the gbr2 installer would just hang but the IDE installer would run fine, and don't have enough knowledge to "see" what's going on when the grb2 installer hang. It actually hangs before the status message starts cycling through any of my devices. All in all, I would guess that my problems are pretty specific to me (i.e. iso-install located on root of ntfs partition) and that 99% of other folks won't run into the same problems so it may not be worth the effort to make this work for me. My next attempt will be to actually burn the discs and see how that goes. I'll be sure to let you all know. Cheers, newt |

this didnt make sense to me how the same code running from IDE would get different results, so I ran a few tests and found that if I exited the installer before doing anything in it, and ran from the IDE, I got the same results. Installed from burned discs on my laptop, 1.73GHz Celeron-M/1G RAM. System seems very sluggish. Installed gkrellm and a cpu monitor plugin. Not sure how accurate it is, but I get the impression that cpu scaling is backwards. When system is doing nothing, it shows 1733 MHz and single digits usage. As soon as I launch a heavy app, like amarok, cpu freq drops way down, showing alternating 216 and 433 MHz, with usage 99-100%. When application finally stabilizes, it returns to 1733 and 1-4% Very strange. Newt, the troubles from kde on your desktop are because of the NV driver. Try setting the color depth down to 16 bit. You might want to additionaly change driver to vesa instead nv, but I think just doing the color depth should be enough for that. Upstream issue with kde4 there, alternatively you can turn off the extras (clock) and use classsic menu. UNsure why Nvidia (or kernel src) did not install there, I did not run into that issue. |

Hello, I was going to test installing B1.3 but was unable to. The installer stalls when searching for install media, but usually I'm able to run the installer from the gambas IDE to get it find the install media - this time it could not find the installable ISO media on /sda1. I would have tried updating the installer with SVN but it seems networking is disabled in B1.3. Cheers, newt |

I updated my ISOs to B1.2 and began the installation. It hung at the same point with the included installer. I tried running the installer from the gambas IDE and got the same error message as with B1.1 (something about missing images). I then updated the installer (as suggested) and noticed that the update process spit out a bunch of 'restored image' messages plus it updated a few installer files from SVN. I re-ran 'gbr2 /root/speedy/vinstall...' and the same problem occurred - the installer hung when searching for install media. Again, I tried the gambas IDE and this time it worked - the restored images much have fixed the error message I was receiving earlier. Additionally, I was able to complete the entire installation this time (running the installer from the IDE allowed it to get past the 'finding media' stage). I did a pretty straight-forward install without testing the installer functionality and all seemed to work well (re-used and re-formatted partitions, custom but only unchecked ATI driver, lilo bootloader to bootsector, new users, etc). Upon reboot, I noticed that the label for my windows partition was not as I chose during the install. During the installation the label was 'window-sda1' but the lilo boot entry shows 'MicrosoftWindow' (not a big deal but not what I specifically chose). During configuration I chose to install proprietary Nvidia drivers. This immediately failed with a message indicating it could not find the kernel source, however I DID choose to install it. Since it failed xorg must have been configured with the 'nv' driver by default because that's what was being used when X started. I have a widescreen monitor (1680x1050), and when KDM displayed there are left and right vertical areas that are not covered by the KDM theme. These areas display with various 'crap'. The first boot they are being displayed with the equivalent of 'black-and-white ants' only multicolored. The second boot they displayed with some multicolored ants and what looked like window controls (i.e. a partial windows with titlebar and icon along with a blue background). Again, not a big deal but not pretty by any means. A KDM theme that can cope with widescreens would be preferred but black vertical bars would suffice. When KDE started, everything was very sluggish. Responsiveness was delayed by 1+ seconds for everything. Right-click on desktop and I have to wait 1-2 seconds for the menu to be displayed. Move the analog clock, and I have to wait ~2 seconds after letting go of the mouse button for it to actually move. Worst of all, I could not see the KDE menu. I would click on the menu and the outline of the menu would show but nothing else (i.e. I could still see the desktop background where the menu should be showing), not to mention that it would take a couple seconds for the menu outline to even display. I'm betting that these issues (display and responsiveness) are somehow related to the display driver issue I had, but perhaps not. Overall, it was not a very successful test. I could not use KDE in any kind of productive way so I was unable to test anything else. Also, I did not put the installer through any kind of tests this go-round. I'm looking forward to the next beta. Hello, I was going to give B1.1 a shot but could not get past finding the media step. For some odd reason the installer just stalled at the screen indefinitely. I attempted to run the installer from gambas but it could not run the project - an error message about 'could not find image' stalled it's progress. In the end, I was not able to do anything with B1.1. My installation was on real hardware using an ISO install method. Anyone having troubles with b1.1? Cheers, newt |

Maybe we should do a new B1 with those? I think we should as will get more testers with latest kde4 available. New kde 4.3.3 pkgs are in test/4.3.3/ Maybe we should do a new B1 with those?
