Vector 6.0-SOHO BETA 3. I used a COMPAQ Presario desktop I have used since 2006. AMD 64 Processor-3500-2GB-120GB hard drive-NVIDIA GeFORCE 6150 LE Graphics. *Installation and post-install setup*: Installing the system was quick and painless. It installed less than thirty minutes. My formatting options: I utilized my existing partitions using / exl4-reiserfs /dev/sda1-115GB and /dev/sda5 4919 MB Swap. I used the full / total install default software selection and 1024/768 resolution. Dic #1 finished, and than put in Dic #2. I answered the usual questions and setup an adm. password and user info. / password. I removed Dic#2. No problems @boot. The Desktop loaded very quickly initial boot took about thirty seconds. The wired network defaulted automatically. I set the local time, reduced the desktop icons to 32. I don't like much on a desktop. It was necessary to open the sound mixer and adjust the channel configuration. I increased the PCM to the volume level I needed. This needs to be done with most all distros. That was the setup. *Done*. I followed my usual routine: Secure the updates using Gslap, opened Firefox, Google, Msnbc, a music Dvd. Everything worked 100%. I held off my usual hacking and used all defaults. The Desktop loaded very quickly. The web page renderings were sharp, clear and very pleasing on my eyes. This is not a geek only OS, Vector 6.0-SOHO is every one's desktop. I only looked @ it as a desktop user. This is a polished desktop offering more than all the necessary applications. I works flawlessly No problems. Sorry, nothing to report. Is it Vector 7.0 yet? Regards, Alex -- Alex Taylor |

MY WORD!! I did not get any of January's mail list. I did not know there was any until I got today's, Feb 18, 2010. Anyway, tested install the other night as we were on IRC. I am still testing via the Dell. Still can't stand having nepomuk and the strigi running as it takes way too long for desktop to load. On a better machine, that might not be such an issue. There is some nice additions to the K4.4, but some are just annoying like Windows, where you have "nag screens" that were never there in the history of KDE. For example, when you clear clipboard history you now get one of those nice "are you sure...?" prompts. Fortunately they were nice enough to have a check to never show that again. :) I did notice some other nag screens too. Desktop does seem to load a slight bit faster than it used to (after killing off nepomuk and strigi of course), but seems to hesitate longer when logging out. Seems to be some more functionality in the control center for some of the settings, but I have yet to find custom keyboard settings that doesn't require importing. For example if I want to use the Internet key on my keyboard to launch the web browser... where the heck is that setting? I did notice that on occasion windows will drop slightly off screen, not a big deal but wasn't that way in 4.3. I did not find any show stoppers that should prevent this from going to public testing, or on another ISO. Hello Everyone, I have built the latest kde 4.4.0 against our present vlsoho6 beta 3 release. This required several updates as this uses qt 4.6 and python 2.6. I have it running here and its quite nice better speed lots of new features. I would like to feature this in our next soho release (beta 4?) but I need people to try this prior to building an iso as to what bugs need to be addressed on a package level prior to an official release. The packages are here: ftp://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/pub/vectorlinux/Uelsk8s/test/4.4.0/ Please download all from the base deps and extras into one folder then do in a terminal from that folder upgradepkg --reinstall --install-new * That should get your beta 3 release updated to the new kde as well as the other support and dep packages. Please report your success and failures so we can iron out the kinks before another official release. Thanks for your help! Disregard my original post have tried a couple installs since and they worked fine. Have no idea what computer ghost grabbed my system with the original install. In my opinion this is fine for release as beta3 to the general public if no one disagree's perhaps we could meet in irc thurs evening 8:30 pm pst to whip out an announcement........:) Cheers, Vec Robert Lange vec...@ya... http://www.vectorlinux.com --- On Tue, 1/19/10, M0E Lnx <m0...@gm...> wrote: > From: M0E Lnx <m0...@gm...> > Subject: Re: [Vectorlinux-devel] vl-soho6-beta3.1 installer problem.....new bug > To: "Vector Linux developer's list" <vec...@li...> > Received: Tuesday, January 19, 2010, 7:37 AM > Tony told me it worked perfectly for > him. > You might consider doing an actual install like everyone > else to see > if you get better results. Tony told me it worked perfectly for him. You might consider doing an actual install like everyone else to see if you get better results. Nothing has changed except for the way partitions are detected and the way grub is configured. |

M0E & Uel....... Tried installing beta3.1 soho6 all went well till package install time. The first 50% of the packages installed ok but a little slow to the norm as with past installer tests. The second half of package installation slowed to a halt at about 80% of installation at which point I let it run a good two hours and only gained about another 5% at that point I shut it down. There were no freezes and mouse pointer still worked but my hd led was steady on and package installation may have finished if I let it run all night. Something obviously is not right here as I have never seen this slow of package installation in all the time I have been testing the installer. Have no clue the problem less the installer ran out of temp space or something. I did my usual install using a pendrive to load the init.gz then installing from iso images on a hd partition. Hope this was a simple oversite somewhere. Yeah, I think the IDE was dropped to make room for other things, and now needs qt libraries. I dont see anything unusual in the output though... and it's not an error in the code or anything, otherwise, he would see some sort of a pop-up error message saying something. It's very strange and I'm really out of bullets on this one. |

Uel, M0E If you have looked at the forum Dweeberkitty is having a problem detecting the install media from the installer from soho beta2. I don't know how to help here. M0E has responded to run the ide to find the bug but seems it does not run due to lack of a qt-lib. I have been looking for both you guys on irc for the past several days with no luck. I know its close to Xmas but can you give me an update as to your status and can we fix the init.gz so dweeberkitty can run the ide asap before he looses interest? Please let me know going crazy here. Thanks and Merry Christmas!! Announced on twitter ... Not that anyone is listening, but just in case some alien tries to tune in and decides to try vl... there it is. @ rbistolfi Please add the Beta2 release to the "versions" list at the bug tracker... I need to write a "howto file a bug report for vectorlinux" in the forums. Many people dont know how to use the trac system. |

I announced the beta2 release of SOHO6 tonight see the release announcement here on the forum: http://forum.vectorlinux.com/index.php?topic=10983.0 Please everyone give it a try. Lots of improvements with gui installer and Uel updated kde to 4.3.4 and koffice to 2.1. I added digikam to the mix plus some new graphics thanks to Masta. X.org was upgraded to version 7.4 so those with newer intel graphics should be happy now. Please post bugs and comments on the forum. Installer bugs should go on the tracker. M0E update tracker link please. Rod please update website asap..........ty. Thanks to all looking good here! I dont use fb @ all. I just got on twitter and thought this would be cool.. A lot of other distros have quite a number of followers on twitter. Maybe a good way to get some extra publicity for our work. |
