Hi, We do have strange things reported from 6.0 light installer. Excerpts from chat log: <su77> Stuck at Optional Partitions <su77> Pretty sure I allocated / and swap, but then get to optional partitions. I do not want to allocate any other ones, so I just hit enter. screen refreshes and nothing happens <su77> https://vector.ecosq.com/ic/HowTos/HowToBook/ChapGetStarted/guiInstallation <su77> at figure 11 <su77> Old thinkpad, came with Win Me. <su77> Anything I am doing seriously wrong with install? Pretty sure allocated / and swap <Vanger> Win ME - well, then your laptop is somtheing like P3 <Vanger> It'll handle both Std and Light ok <Vanger> Try selecting some partition as /mnt/win <su77> That is a problem. With one free partition, it says "no more partitions available". Should I make another one just for the heck of it? <su77> Tried to point /home to a spare partition already. Tried many things. Also tried manually pointing all optional to root. <Vanger> So you do have two partitons on hdd, / and swap, right? <Vanger> How big is your hdd, btw? <su77> 5GB. 4GB root, 500MB swap, 500MB spare. <Vanger> Yes, there is no sense in making separate /home partition <Vanger> Spare means "unallocated"? <su77> linux partition there. I can put /home there. But /mnt/win gives a warning. <Vanger> Try putting /home there, please <Vanger> Don't continue the installation if you succeed <su77> Same thing. Also, on https://vector.ecosq.com/ic/HowTos/HowToBook/ChapGetStarted/guiInstallation page there is text-mode installation. -- ++luck |

I hear this is too big a change. I hit the same wall when I wanted to build the latest glade3 which requires new gtk (our gtk in SOHO beta is way too old too), which requires new glib and libc. |

I just managed to build vlc 1.0.3 on VL6 SOHO Beta and it complains about a buggy version of glibc, suggesting that one should disable a couple of things to build it. Afterwards, when run from a console, you get this message: VLC media player 1.0.3 Goldeneye LibVLC has detected an unusable buggy GNU/libc version. Please update to version 2.8 or newer. Do we really need to update this, or would this be too big a change at this point? Regards, Joe1962 |

Hey Guys, I am pasting a nice email I recieved today you all deserve the praise so here it is: -------------------------- Hi, I downloaded the SOHO today. I have been a Linux user for a number of years. At one time I was involved with an IT/MIS operation with close to 300 techs and back up. I had great people as I am engineer but not IT. The last few years I have not wandered to far from Vector. This new SOHO is superior to ANY platform I have ever used. Apple, Windows, BSD and most Linux. WOW!! I have been a member for awhile and if I can do anything to help, please let me know. I want to pay for this great work of yours. How can I pay for this or make a donation. My wife is also very impressed and she usually wants nothing to do with any type of automation as during the day she is at a university and assist students is securing a PhD in business or information sciences. Her WOW means much more than mine. Let me know how to pay for this and If I can help. Thanks for what you do. Ok, I've reinstalled using first disk only. Installation went succesfull, lilo was written in the MBR. But when I try to boot the system, first three lines of kernel booting show themselves and then machine goes to reboot. I'm running Athlon 64 2800+ on AsRock K8NF4G-SATA2 with 1024Mb of DDR RAM and two videocards (GF 6100 integrated and 8600GT). I'm installing VL on the same partition previous versions were installed to, on 80Gb Samsung IDE drive. |

On full install from both discs installation froze on 92%, while unpacking kernel sources from second CD. md5sums of the discs look fine. Can anyone confirm? |

Hello All, Great news! That was a "3 birds with 1 stone" bug fix for me. 1) The installer no longer stalls. Fantastic! 2) I can no longer reproduce the bug where the installer loses the ability to find the install source. This bug could easily have been attributed to my card reader given the stalling issues I had been having. 3) I no longer see my ntfs drives as 'fuseblk' after using gparted. I did not attempt the full install due to time limitations this morning but was able to test these few issues. They all seem to be resolved on my end. Great work to all, and thanks for hanging in there to help me resolve these strange issues. Hopefully this will help at least a few people down the road. Cheers, newt |

Hello, I attempted both methods mentioned below, and I had great expectations that one of them would work, but unfortunately neither fixed the issue. I even tried a standard CD install with no luck. However, after much playing and comparing 'ps ax' screens between the IDE and runtime I think I've determined my problem. I think it's directly related to my built-in/usb card reader. I kept noticing that the installer was hanging on the command: "sh -c parted /dev/sdd print | grep -i partition table: | cut -f2 d:" (each of these would then be listed individually in the processes immediately following the combined statement). After checking probedisk I determined that sdd, sde, sdf, sdg are individual slots on the card reader. With the installer running and stalled, I started killing the individual 'parted' processes and as I killed them a new but different statement would appear for a total of 2 parted statements per device. After killing the 8 processes (2 process for 4 devices), the throbber began spinning again and the installer continued by finding the CD. At this point I bailed out of the installation to report my findings. I guess the strangest part (to me) is why the IDE would run the installer normally but directly from the runtime would not. I did notice that when running the installer from the IDE a separate process (gbx2 -f -d .... /speedy --) would run the project. I guess this would indicate the the IDE runs the project itself while the runtime has to run a binary/compiled version?? More (possibly unnecessary) info: When I would manually run the command "parted /dev/sdd print" I would receive an error stating: "Error opening /dev/sdd: No medium found. Retry/Cancel?" When I would manually run the command "sh -c parted /dev/sdd print", the actual parted command interpreter would start up using /dev/hda and I would have to manually 'quit'. @Newt: Try this load the gambas IDE Instead of clicking the play button, click on Project -> Make -> Executable This will create a brand new binary based off the current code. Once that is done, exit the IDE, and execute the new binary ./speedy.gambas > gui.log & See if that yields any better results |

Hello Uel, B1.6 allowed me to install via the gambas IDE installer, but the gbr2 installer continued the 'lockup' problem. In other words, ntfs/fuse/etc seems to be working in this beta such that the installer can find the install source at the root of an ntfs partition, but for the strangest reason the installer - when run from the runtime (gbr2) - just gets stuck when looking for install media. I HAVE to use the gambas2 IDE and click the 'play/run' button. B1.7 behaves similarly to B1.6 for me - the IDE installer works but the gbr2 installer continues to lockup. Is there anything I can run to help capture what is going on when the gbr2 process is locking up? Some kind of a 'tail' command, or '-debug' option? Anything that can help capture what code is being run at the moment the gbr2 installer is searching for install media? Is it possible the gbr2 runtime is not synced with the actuall gambas2 installation? In other words, could they be different versions (IDE vs runtime)? Hello, I found time to give B1.6 a try and it seems to be working much better. The default gbr2 installer still hangs when looking for ISO install source and I have to kill the pid. However, the gambas IDE installer runs fine and finds the source at the root of an ntfs partition just fine. Also, I can still reproduce that strange installer bug I mentioned a while back regarding the 'Search Again' button losing it's ability to find the install media. The way I make the bug show is to click next until you get to the step where you create new partitions or use existing partitions. Then I click back to go back to the install source step. Then I click 'Search Again' a couple times. After about the 2nd or 3rd time it can no longer find the install source ISOs. However, I don't think this is a big deal because 1) it takes a strange set of steps to make it happen, and 2) I recall that M0E could not reproduce the bug so it could very well be limited to my system/scenario (ISO install method, iso's sitting on ntfs partition, multiple mixed hard drives sata and ide). All of the other bugs I mentioned in my B1.2 test have been resolved: lilo labels are correct, proprietary nvidia driver installs and works, no more left and right kdm vertical bars, kde responsiveness was great - no sluggishness, kde menu displays normally. It all seems to have installed correctly. One thing I noticed is that my audio did not work. lspci identifies it as intel high definition audio, while windows identifies it as sigmatel high definitial audio. Perhaps they are synonymous? Anyway, I tried playing several of the system sounds and nothing actually made any sounds. I checked the mixer volume and mute setting, and both appeared to be set correctly. I didn't investigate beyond this. Last, I noticed that the KDE menu 'Favorites' do not list the VL-specific tools anymore. I imagine they'll be added back before the final but just thought I'd mention this. I did not do any application testing. Cheers, newt |

Uel, That did indeed fix X :-) I now think my laptop is getting flaky. After encountering some more problems, like alsaconf not finding any soundcard, I decided to go back and try some other ISO's which worked last week. Sure enough, same problem with my KDE-Classic versions. Bummer. You can disregard my testing reports as being unreliable, and not representative.
