I have re-built the KDE packages as robert requested against the qt, libdrm, mesa and intel drivers. I was not having any trouble with any of the packages, but just to be safe. Here are the new packages. ftp://ftp-osl.osuosl.org/pub/vectorlinux/Uelsk8s/test/kde-4.3.0/build2/ maybe we should put these in the next ISO and see if they work so we can get rid of the first build |

The computer I used to make the ISO on refused to boot the other day. Looks like flaky hardware may have caused a problem. Add a botched kernel upgrade and Live B4 was doomed. So I started over, using the same laptop that Light itself was made on, upgraded kernel, even got greedy and added vlnvidia and vlati. My own testing looks pretty good so far. Nvidia GF 5200 and 6200 cards work great. Not so sure about vlati, though. Maybe someone who have a known good ATI card could test it. I'm starting the upload right now, before heading out to the Cincinnati Brewhaha festival. 80 beers to sample from! The upload should be done about 21:00 EDT. It is very optimistically called RC1. If a web site operator could move it to public and announce it's availability that would be great. Great weekend, guys. Roy |

Hello, Attached is a /var/log/Xorg.0.log from the problematic system below using the VESA driver on 6 Standard Gold. It also has the same problem of 'no signal' when using vesa. This log is from trying to start X on 6 Standard Gold using vesa driver. Hopefully something can be found out from this log. Fbdev, on the other hand, seems to work fine as well as the proprietary and open source nvidia drivers. Hello, Thanks Uel. I did not think it would be possible but thought I'd ask. I have tried 'gui vga=normal' and have the same problem at the same place - just after 'logging in as root' when X should start. I think I still have 6StdGold installed on that system so I'll try updating xorg to use 'vesa' and see if the same issues occur. I'm sure that when I installed StdGold it was via the ncurses installer so I probably never ran across this problem back than. I'll let you know how it goes. Hello, Testing 1.15 on home built system: AMD Athlon 1800+, Abit Siluro FX5200 Nvidia 128mb agp, 2gb ram, msi mb w/ nvidia chipset Hit enter, go through bootsplash, config monitor resolution, 'testing X... hold tight' goes by, ~9 lines of text with the last being 'logging into root' - at this point my monitor goes out (no signal; as if the computer shut off) but the computer is still running. I can switch between TTYs and regain monitor but going back to TTY2 (jwm/gui) monitor goes blank/no_signal. In case it matters: This system is connected via kvm, however the system runs VL6StdGold via kvm with no problems. And I test another system (p3/256mbram) same way - works fine. Is it possible to dictate which video driver to use at some point during the booting/initialization process? For instance, to pass 'nv' as the video driver to use when starting X. I can confirm that it is working fine on my laptop now. DRI is working out of the box. I have intel on my laptop and ati on my desktop. both work fine... of course, DRI is a no-go on ati, but that's no surprise... I dont expect that to work out of the box, but I do get a descent gui on first boot (1440x900) |

Newt........... Glad you tried om the low ram machines as we were not sure what the magic number would be but looks like a minimum of 256 mb is gonna be required if you could outfit one with that minimum and try would be appreciated. The other machine with nvidia is a puzzler as nvidia normally plays nice with vesa driver. The k2 600 is in the pentium 2 class and even if you got installed would be way to slow to useable. Hello, I just tested the PIII-1ghz/128mbRAM with 'gui vga=normal' and received a kernel panic: >> Checking if image is initramfs...it isn't (no cpio magic); looks like an initrd >> Kernel panic - not syncing: Out of memory and no killable processes The other low-spec machine I tried normally earlier and it could not finish loading the image (image.gz). Without actually opening it up I think it may be too low-spec to be a valid test machine for SOHO - AMD-K2-600/64mbRAM/ATIRage128 - what do you think? Is an AMD-K2 processor in the i586 or above class ranking? If so, I _may_ have some old SDRAM memory for it so it can load the initial boot image. On to the "newer" machine below: Any ideas on what to try regarding the monitor signal going out when JWM should load? Newt, can you try booting both of the low-spec boxes with " gui vga=normal" and let us know if there is any difference On Aug 20, 2009, at 4:28 PM, Newt <gen...@gm...> wrote: > Hello, > > Testing 1.14 on home built system: AMD Athlon 1800+, Abit Siluro > FX5200 Nvidia > 128mb agp, 2gb ram, msi mb w/ nvidia chipset > > Hit enter, go through bootsplash, config monitor resolution, > 'testing X... hold > tight' goes by, ~9 lines of text with the last being 'logging into > root' - at this > point my monitor goes out (no signal; as if the computer shut off) > but the > computer is still running. > > In case it matters: This system is connected via kvm, however the > system runs > VL6StdGold via kvm with no problems. > > Cheers, newt > > > > --- > --- > --- > --------------------------------------------------------------------- > Let Crystal Reports handle the reporting - Free Crystal Reports 2008 > 30-Day > trial. Hello, Testing 1.14 on home built system: AMD Athlon 1800+, Abit Siluro FX5200 Nvidia 128mb agp, 2gb ram, msi mb w/ nvidia chipset Hit enter, go through bootsplash, config monitor resolution, 'testing X... hold tight' goes by, ~9 lines of text with the last being 'logging into root' - at this point my monitor goes out (no signal; as if the computer shut off) but the computer is still running. In case it matters: This system is connected via kvm, however the system runs VL6StdGold via kvm with no problems. Cheers, newt |
