I think you should update to the patched kernel no difference except vunerability patch so there will be no problems. IMO you should change the kernel while you can. but it is a livecd so security shouldnt be primary concern there. you can always tell them to update the kernel if they install it. We have a problem in the works here guys. I discovered this while trying to get some eye-candy out of KDE. I noticed it would not enable some stuff like transparency, etc. so I did glxinfo | grep render and it gave me this: Failed to initialize TTM buffer manager. Falling back to classic. If you google that, you'll find a lot of hits suggesting it's due to missing GEM support from the kernel. http://kernelnewbies.org/Linux_2_6_28#head-b957b19f6139b6bbbfabaf790bf643b1746985d6 I dont know what would be easier, downgrade to an older xorg|intel driver or enabling support fo this in the kernel, which also requires a newer kernel. GEM support is still in development from what I see. Just thought I'd throw this out there. I can see this being a problem flooding the forums with "OMG I can't run compiz on this" threads. |

Hi Robert. Commenting out the cdrom entry in /etc/fstab fixes the mount problem ( :) I usually do that with 6.0 Standard as well, but haven't seen it break HAL before). The Open Office problem is 100% consistent here. Open writer, select Tools > Extension Manager. When the box comes up, select add. Instead of getting a file pick dialog, Open Office freezes. Looking through the process list, kdefilepicker is listed as a zombie. The only way out it to kill the ooo process. I suspect I'm still running in KDE safe mode (have to check next time I start), so I still need to identify what caused the problem with KDE startup. I'm wondering if it may have been my attempt to enable visual effects (I still don't understand why they're being disabled - they normally work with Intel GPUs). Another problem (which may simply be KDE stupidity) - I can only set performance or power save as profiles. I normally run ondemand for CPU throttling, but there doesn't seem to be any option to do so in SOHO. I've also still got to check the help problems I was seeing in the earlier alpha. paul. I could not duplicate Paul's problem with Open Office here either. the commenting out of the CD rom line in /etc/fstab worked here also for cd. We need to remove kpackage from the menu or install smart as kpackage will not work without it. will keep testing dave |

Paul............ try commenting out the cdrom section of your fstab.........seems we are keeping hal from doing its job there. I can't recreate the openoffice problem neither can uel........anyone else having openoffice issues with this install??? let us know ..............thanks M0E.......... looks like all thats required for cdrom bug is to comment out the cdrom reference in fstab since it conflicts with hal. Downloaded and installed. A few problems.... Install. Nothing major, though the installer is still sluggish compared to most others (such as Fedora 11). I've got the X res set to 1280x800 for the T61's widescreen display. Doing a selective install, when the installer gets to the 'Additional included software;, the screen width is a bit excessive - I'm getting 'ye' at the end of the line, not 'yes'. Other than that minor problem, installer is fine. Once the system is installed. Open office (I presume the same build I'm running under 6.0 standard) goes unresponsive if I attempt to use the extension manager. Looking at the process list, a number of items are listed as zombie when this happens. I have to kill open office to close it. Same version is working fine on 6.0 standard. First user id is set to 1001? Seems strange.... Attempts to mount a CD fail every time. I get the notification, but when I select open in file manager, nothing happens. Clicking on the CD icon then gets me this error message: 'An error occured while accesing 'Zenwalk_Linuc_6.2_CD'. The system responds: mount can't find /dev/hda in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab'. I've tried with both VL-hot and HAL (which would be my normal choice - same error both times. I didn't install Lilo or Grub - have an existing Grub install on the machine, so the first time I rebooted, I did it from the Grub command line. I then added the necessary entries to my existing menu.lst. These include setting the framebuffer mode to the correct one for the 1280x800 widescreen. On reboot, the initial KDM screen came up fine, but when I logged in, I got a few flashes, followed by a blank gray screen with nothing other than a mouse pointer visible. Can't see anything wrong, but the only way I could get KDE to restart was to use the failsafe start option. Screen effects don't work. They should do - they do under both OpenSUSE and Fedora, but are disabled under SOHO. More later - I have to go do some real work :( paul. |

Installer worked pretty well, though there was some confusion when prompted for the second CD - I had to click OK, wait, manually eject the first disk, then insert the second disk and click OK a second time. Can't say I'm all that fond of KDE 4 so far. Most things seem to be working, but I'm having trouble with the help - it complains about a missing index, prompts me to generate it, but complains about missing files. Search in the help then doesn't do anything. I also had some problems with sound on my T61. Took several attempts to get it working - for some reason, the speaker is not selected in the mixer controls, and after it is selected, it is muted - a bit confusing getting it going. :) I'll download the later isos and try them later if I get the chance. paul. |

Howdy folks, A pretty serious bug has been discovered that affects both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels: http://blog.cr0.org/2009/08/linux-null-pointer-dereference-due-to.html Linus has already released this one-liner, which should patch the hole for now: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=e694958388c50148389b0e9b9e9e8945cf0f1b98 The latest kernel 2.4 seems to already have the patch included. Anyway, I checked the forum for this, but the security advisory section doesn't mention it, so I thought I'd just give you vectelopers a nudge ;) Cheers. |
