Hi All, I know we havent used these mailing lists much but I am going to try and revive with any luck. I am excited that our small team of developers has produced a stable working new VL installer based on python and written from scratch with options to expand the code as needed. The installer has progressed over the last year to what I consider stable for the things that it is intended to do. With that in mind I would like all to please test our in house release dubbed b0.33 in both 32 and 64 bit versions (links suppled at the end of this article). We also have had to change our bootsplash system as the new kernels no longer support our tried and true "bootsplash" and the plymouth system is the widely accepted and supported method for a graphical bootsplash. We have plymouth setup to work in VL but there are some rough patches so hang in there with us as we unravel its inner secrets. As always please feel free to reply to this message or file bugs in our bugtracker system. I would like to keep an on going dialog going with the mailing list as it crosses all time zones and is convenient for all that wish to participate. Lookimg forward to lots of participation here and lots of feedback on our upcoming beta release of VectorLinux-7.1. Thank YOU!! Robert aka Vector Links to latest release: http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/pkg/untested/veclinux-7.1/iso/VL-7.1-STD-B0.33.iso http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/pkg/untested/veclinux-7.1/iso/VL64-7.1-STD-B0.33.iso ps these releases are over the 700 mb limit so you will need a dvd to burn the iso. By final release we hope to have it trimmed to under 700 mb so cd media is possible. |

Hi old friends ... just want to say congratulations for the release of VL 7.x series. I missed the fun so much, but live is going on, I'm more of a distro user than a distro developer now :) Keep the spirit :D :D Kocil. |

I'm still using Vector 6.0 SOHO; I love it so much since it is so solid. Upgrading to Vector 7.0 SOHO is on my to-do list, but I was recently in a rare tinkering mood and decided to play with pure Slackware, Slackware 14 to be specific, since I had seen comments on distrowatch concerning "sbopkg". After playing with sbopkg and its related queuefiles, slapt-get seems a bit archaic. Does anyone else use and enjoy sbopkg+queuefiles, and might this be something that would be attractive for Vectorization into upcoming Vector releases? Thanks for an awesome distro. |

Uel, ok after reviewing a few of the failed packages we need to update the glibc to my build #3 in the sandbox this adds some obsolete rpc code that some of our software/libs need this rpc code was deemed obsolete after glibc 2.13 by upstream but unfortunately not all the packages that require this have cleansed themselves. Also if gtk+3 is in the sandbox remove it only should be a dep as needed at this point......trying to build python-sexy said it needed a pygtk version consistant with having gtk+3 installed. Other than those few items I am fixing fast as I can............also sent your list to hata_ph so maybe more help..........:) Cheers, Vec ----- Original Message ----- From: uel archuletta Sent: 09/05/12 09:42 AM To: vec...@ya... I had a few spare minutes today to test out the VL7.0-CORE-ALPHA-4.10.iso. Installation went without a hitch for me. All previous mentions of bugs were fixed as far as installer itself goes. I do have a problem with the X though. When I try to run startx, it locks up with black screen and a non-blinking cursor in the upper left of screen. This doesn't seem to matter if I use the vxconfig or the auto. I think after we track down the X issue, we should be good from there. Cheers, Masta |

Update on this issue: We tried replacing the backplane and one of the PSU's earlier this week but had the machine fail on us again. Its back out of rotation and will be getting its mainboard replaced sometime on Monday. Additionally, we had an issue with our shared mailman instance that we use in the last 24hrs. It should be fixed now so you may have noticed some late emails coming in. Ladies and Gentlemen, FYI regarding the osuosl server cluster. This hardware issue can explain some of the timeouts you may have encountered in doing repo work, etc. Thanks, John ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Lance Albertson <la...@os...> Date: Fri, Sep 10, 2010 at 4:22 PM Subject: [Hosting-ftp] ftp-osl hardware issues ( ftp.osuosl.org/rsync.osuosl.org) To: ho...@os..., hos...@os... We've been having hardware issues with one of the servers in our ftp.osuosl.org cluster in the last few weeks. You may have noticed rsync/http timeouts (especially earlier today) if you were hitting ftp-osl.osuosl.org (aka 140.211.166.134). We have a ticket open with the hardware vendor and have taken the machine out of our public ftp and rsync rotation to try and minimize the issue. Unfortunately this machine also acts as our primary master to sync the other ftp servers. That means we might fall behind sometimes depending on the sync scheduling. I hope to have this resolved ASAP. The issues I was referring to (if any) will show up from here on out as there were changes made to the way the user accounts are created/imported. Changes went up today. New accounts worked fine for me. but didn't have the oportunity to import new ones. |

I did Beta 4 test back on the 27th of Feb. 2010. I did not have this letter by then so I did import a user. I did not see any issues importing. Be advised that I also did not select anything to be reset within that user's settings. Installation was smooth here. We did lose some other things, but seeing that this was an experimental iso that Vec wanted to internally test on, I'm sure those things were skipped over for the purpose. For the CD2 stuff, you should look at the directory called CD2 in the ISO in veclinux anything that goes in the second disk needs to be listed there IIRC |

Thank you M0E! Looks like I'm gonna have to make a beta 4.1 with more video drivers based on early returns from the beta 4 release. Also is there a way to do an optional list for CD2 as I had to move some stuff over there to make room for the new kde-4.4? I will include latest installer in the 4.1 release. Ok. I have bypassed all the checks and going against what I think is the best way to do this, but it seems to be what everyone else wants. So, I've made the changes to force the counter to start @ 1000. I have tested it and seems to work fine for me. Have not tested importing accounts after this change though, so if you guys find any problem importing accounts, please let me know. |

I can do that, but I've got to say it is completely counter-intuitive. If that is what is needed, you need to provide some explanation. Especially since the first part of the installer includes country and keyboard setup. I, and I'm sure others, assumed that the 'use localization used during install' meant to use the SELECTED localization. Either provide a clear explanation, or assume that the selections made at the start of the install (country and keyboard layout) are what the user wants (otherwise why make them in the first place?). > I don't know why the uid is still 1001. I'm not the only one who may have more than one user with a UID of 1000 for multiple reasons. The way its handled at the moment is not useful. It isn't even very useful for someone who doesn't normally use multiple UID 1000 IDs. Given the changes made between the betas, having a new user for each beta install makes sense, otherwise any changes made to the user setup will not be visible when an existing user is imported. Concole keymap is andled by vasm. I'm not doing anything for it on the gui insttaller. He needs to uncheck the "use localizations used during install" box from the root password stage to be able to set that up on first boot. I don't know why the uid is still 1001. They must have something in the home partition with permissions granted to a uid 1000 for the installer to not be using that value On Feb 28, 2010 2:34 AM, "Robert Lange" <vec...@ya...> wrote: M0E... yeah saw your fix in svn so tried and no crash thats good but bad news is a new user uid is still 1001 so not quite there yet. M0E, It has to be a syntax error because the error it throws says it expected an integer but got a string instead as best I remember. Is there another way to code that? do you need the AND statement? I don't know gambas so not sure........:( Robert Robert Lange vec...@ya... http://www.vectorlinux.com --- On Wed, 2/24/10, M0E Lnx <m0...@gm...> wrote: > From: M0E Lnx <m0...@gm...> > Subject: Re: [Vectorlinux-devel] New installer problem > To: "Vector Linux developer's list" <vec...@li...> > Received: Wednesday, February 24, 2010, 5:02 PM > I'm having a hard time pinpointing > this. > > These are the latest changes I made to that module > http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/trac/vinstall/changeset?new=954%40branches%2Fspeedy%2FMdlMain.module&old=952%40branches%2Fspeedy%2FMdlMain.module > > Can you run it in the IDE and see what it says to see where > the error really is? > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Download Intel® Parallel Studio Eval > Try the new software tools for yourself. I'm having a hard time pinpointing this. These are the latest changes I made to that module http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/trac/vinstall/changeset?new=954%40branches%2Fspeedy%2FMdlMain.module&old=952%40branches%2Fspeedy%2FMdlMain.module Can you run it in the IDE and see what it says to see where the error really is? |

Hi M0E...... I am putting together SOHO beta 4 and I used the latest installer from svn the one you changed so a created user gets a uid of 1000. There must be a typo in there or something as everytime i try to create the user the installer gives a type mismatch error and dies. Importing a user works fine just creating a new one seems to throw the error. I would like to get the new test iso's up soon so let me know soon as you have discovered the problem. I have it running here and its quite nice better speed lots of new features. I would like to feature this in our next soho release (beta 4?) but I need people to try this prior to building an iso as to what bugs need to be addressed on a package level prior to an official release. The packages are here: > ftp://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/pub/vectorlinux/Uelsk8s/test/4.4.0/ > Please download all from the base deps and extras into one folder then do in a terminal from that folder upgradepkg --reinstall --install-new * > That should get your beta 3 release updated to the new kde as well as the other support and dep packages. I have hit one error so far - see the attached image. Also, while installing, I noticed that Beta 3 is not setting the console keyboard layout according to the selections made during the install. I set my keyboard as UK, but I'm getting US keyboard when running in a console (I used 'init 3' to install the new KDE). Paul. |
