Many thanks. Before I start fumbling/experimenting using your suggestions...

What if we use text-only instead text-with-gamma?
Would that be easier to handle? How?

It may not look as good, but would be a lot better than not
being able to mix text and shapes-with-opacity at all, or for
it to be too slow.
