Well, that's the whole point, isn't it? If you prefer 2-space indents
and I prefer 4-space indents, then each of us can set the tab width we
desire without upsetting the other. There is no downside!

It does matter, because people like to use different amounts of
indent. Proper use of tabs stops this being a problem.
