[uml-user] Xterms white on white with UML

I have a wierd problem I hope someone can help. 
I am using uml, on debian Sid, and when I start it (with the default
slack rootfs, or a rootfs made by me) the xterm that pops up (4 with the
slack) has screwed up colours such that I cannot read the xterm, it is
set up with a white background and white text. Any suggestions as to how
to fix this? thanks
