In NVIDIA's driver set on linux, we provide an XFree86 driver, a glx module for the X server, an OpenGL library, and a kernel module which effectively sits between all the other pieces and the graphics hardware, managing the resources that our X and OpenGL drivers require. At this point, I've just been exploring UML as an alternative kernel level debugging technique. Sorry, kind of off-topic for this list, I imagine. This is just a side project, so I don't expect to make any progress quickly. I'll let you know what I find, though.
