By "automount", do you mean having hostfs mount another fs behind the user's 
back whenever it crosses a host filesystem boundary?  Or do you mean using 
autofs?

Is it possible to construct unique inode numbers by combining the host inode 
and device?  If that were possible, I suppose that nfs would be doing that, 
though.
