you need to configure the network on both host [1] and uml image [2], for
instance:

[1]=20
iface tap0 inet static
address 10.0.1.99
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 10.0.1.0
broadcast 10.0.1.255
up echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
up iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth1 -j MASQUERADE
pre-up tunctl -u <your-user>

[2]
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 10.0.1.100
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 10.0.1.0
up route add -net 0.0.0.0 dev eth0
up route add -net 0.0.0.0 gw <your-gateway-to-internet>

Remember that your user must belong to the uml-net group.
