Could you please post the stack trace of the error? Just to be sure I
checked out a new copy on CVS and ran the policy command. No database
problem appears to be on my side, so I'm going to need more information in
order to solve the problem. Here's a copy paste of my test.

Greetings Developers, I've added a new command for ursus that allows you to modify AccessPolicys from within the server. Once logged in typing "policy -help" will give you a list of options for this command. So everyone update your CVS tree and start up and login to Ursus and type policy create Test policy list Then look at the file PolicyCommand.java located in src/ursus/server/plugins/core path. This will provide you with an example of how things tie together in Ursus. I would like the GroupCommand.java file located in the same directory implemented, I have opened up a task at http://sourceforge.net/pm/task.php?func=detailtask&project_task_id=118857&group_id=145215&group_project_id=44123 Anyone who would like to volunteer for this job can, because I already added GroupCommand to the plugin ONLY the GroupCommand.java file should have to be edited to get your code to run. If you want to claim this task visit the Task Manager and select yourself as the developer the task is assigned to. -Anthony _________________________________________________________________ Dont just search. Greetings Developers, I will be creating new tasks on the "Task Manager" at the project page http://sourceforge.net/projects/ursus I will let developers decide which tasks they want to work on. If some of you want to work in teams completing the tasks this is perfectly acceptable. All of you know your strengths and weaknesses as programmers so please use discretion in undertaking tasks, and always compile and test before committing code. -Anthony _________________________________________________________________ FREE pop-up blocking with the new MSN Toolbar get it now! http://toolbar.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200415ave/direct/01/ |

Greetings Developers, Today is a very exciting day for me! Now Ursus comes bundles with HSQLDB so developers don't have to worry about setting up a database when they download and install Ursus! Please visit the updated site documentation page. http://ursus.sourceforge.net/doc.html All developers should try to download and install the latest version of Ursus from CVS. If you already have a version of Ursus checked out from the CVS tree please delete it and check out another copy. Please note that the anonymous pserver sometimes doesn't reflect the latest version of the CVS tree, I'm guessing it's mirrored. So if you get an error about not having the right User for the SQL database then you checked out the old version and will have to wait for the anonymous servers to mirror the correct version. When prompted for a password just hit enter. cvs -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/ursus login cvs -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/ursus co ursus Now enter the projects root directory 'ursus' and type. ant jar-server ant jar-client By default typing this from the dist/ursus-server directory will start the server. java -jar Server.jar conf/conf.xml In another terminal move over to the dist/ursus-client directory and type the following java -jar Client.jar conf/conf.xml localhost 7000 I am ready to start assigning projects and adding developers to the project. If anyone has any particular project that they would want to work on now would be the time to speak up! Also, I need everyones Sourceforge username so I start adding developers. - Anthony _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! Yassine, Ursus does contain a "lib" folder for storing packages that need to be accessed. The problem arrises when a developer installs his own database, you can't just place the database driver .jar file into the lib directory and expect the software to find it. All jar files used must be explicitly declared, unfortunately you can't just add the directory the jar files are in to the classpath. Developers there is HOPE!! I'm working on getting Ursus bundled with Hypersonic SQL, an all Java SQL database, this way the only step needed to compile Ursus will be to type in ant compile.. :) Please bear with me a little longer, I should have the changes up on cvs within the next few days. At that time I will also write new install docs so everyone should be able to get up and running with the code without having to worry about configuring a database. There will still be the option of using your own database so you'll still be able to set your driver in the conf.xml file. -Anthony >From: <ye...@di...> >To: <Urs...@li...> >Subject: [Ursus-developers] just an idea >Date: Fri, 19 Aug 2005 14:45:23 +0200 > >hi Anthony, > >about the jdbc driver issue i have an idea we are using here where i work > >we have a directory (lib) in the project where needed packages/jar and own >jar ... are stored and this directory is beeing involved each time we are >compiling or executing any sources > >thats all i wish you all a good day > >greetings from Cologne > >Yassine > > >__________________________________________________ >Verpassen Sie keine eBay-Auktion und bieten Sie bequem >und schnell über das Telefon mit http://www.telefonbieten.de > >Ihre eMails auf dem Handy lesen - ohne Zeitverlust - 24h/Tag >eMail, FAX, SMS, VoiceMail mit http://www.directbox.com > > > > >------------------------------------------------------- >SF.Net email is Sponsored by the Better Software Conference & EXPO >September 19-22, 2005 * San Francisco, CA * Development Lifecycle Practices >Agile & Plan-Driven Development * Managing Projects & Teams * Testing & QA >Security * Process Improvement & Measurement * http://www.sqe.com/bsce5sf >_______________________________________________ >Ursus-developers mailing list >Urs...@li... >https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/ursus-developers _________________________________________________________________ Dont just search. Please not that part of that thread is incorrect. According to Sun the jre/lib/ext directory is designed for official javax extensions AND user defined extensions. Please disregard what I said previously about which directory to place the database drivers. To get the project to run, for now, place the jars in the Extensions directory. $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext Like I said, I'm working on a better solution. Thanks Oleg! I guess I was misinformed about where to place system wide jars, from what I just read, it is my understanding that they should be placed in. jre/lib NOT jre/lib/ext. Additionally, Yassine may have downloaded the debug driver, you may be able to fix the problem by downloading the smaller driver without debug options. This driver thing has become a serious issue and I'm trying to design a more eloquent method of handling the problem. Suggestions are welcome.. :) -Anthony >From: "Oleg Ponomaryov" <ol...@ya...> >To: <urs...@li...> >Subject: Re: [Ursus-developers] now its my turn :) >Date: Thu, 18 Aug 2005 13:08:09 -0600 > >Yassine, >Google usually rules. Vishal,
JVM could not find your MySQL driver. All you need to do is:
1. Make sure you actually have mysqlXXX.jar in your system.
2. Make sure your mysqlXXX.jar is accessible by JVM - it's in your =
$JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ for example.

Oleg,
There are a few reasons this is. One, I don't think users should be
expected to compile the driver into the project, also I don't expect users
to mess with classpaths. I assumed that the user of the software has
already installed their driver in the java extensions directory. So in
order to just modify the conf.xml file for the server like you want, you
must copy the drivers jar file into this directory.
$JAVA_PATH/jre/lib/ext
This does not seem like a good way to do things, but it has to be done like
this because...
1. Java does not allow you to add wildcards (ex. lib/*.jar) in the
Class-Path manifest entry, so you have to know before hand exactly which
jars you want to load.
2. Java ignores all -classpath information passed in on command line args
when using the java -jar option.
3. Considering reasons 1 and 2 there are a few ways to go about the problem.
We could not jar the software and make the user enter a very long
classpath to execute the software, this is a bad option.
We could not jar the software and provide .BAT and .sh and .dmg
executables for system independent execution(this is still an option, but we
need to provide multiple executables for different architectures),
We could leave it to the user to compile it in like you did, this
doesn't seem right as you stated.
So we are left with the only option that we have for right now which is
to add the driver to the jre/lib/ext directory in your java home.
I believe we will eventually phase over into using architecture independent
executables so all the user will have to do is. Add their driver to the
/lib directory and click on an icon to start up the software.
But to do this you need to be able to test it on multiple arrchitectures,
and I can't do that without other peoples help.
Regarding the sites documentation, the old users table was named personas.
The latest version of the software is up on cvs and it uses the two tables I
previously described via this mailing list. The documentation on that page
is still good to read over, but a lot of changes have been made to the code
since then, that's why I sent that message about the new database setup.
The table personas doesn't exist anymore, and probably never will again. :)
Users and Groups are the only to tables the software requires.
Hoping I made a little sense,
-Anthony

Anthony,
a few things
1. I have managed to plug in PostgreSQL database
instead of MySQL. The only
thing I didn't like is I had to modify build.xml to
tell compiler to include
PostgreSQL jdbc driver into server.jar. Below is the
fragment of build.xml
I've changed :
<jar destfile = "${ursus-server}/Server.jar"
basedir = "${build}/classes"
includes =
"ursus/server/**,ursus/io/**,ursus/common/**">
<manifest>
<attribute name = "Main-Class" value =
"ursus.server.Server"/>
<attribute name = "Class-Path" value =
"lib/backport-util-concurrent.jar lib/pg74jdbc3.jar"/>
</manifest>
</jar>
It would be great if I just need to modify
serverconftemplate.xml only.
You mentioned something about that in the doc, but
it's not clear how to do
that.
2. The Documentation says all I need for testing is
two tables:
Groups and personas. It seems like it's not true any
more. The server
required users table as well when I ran server and
client. Could you please
check the structure of your database for me. It's good
idea always keep the
latest structure in CVS.
Thanks,
Oleg

Oleg,
I built a new jar archive from the backport, perhaps
there was something
wrong, I don't know. The new .jar has been commited
to CVS. Maybe that
will fix the problem...

Well, I did as you said and compared the .jar files, and they are the same. 245992 for backport-util-concurrent.jar 96430 for javax-crypto.jar I did a search for ".jar corrupt CVS" on google and ran into other people with the same problem, apparently you must add a -kb flag when adding binary files to the repository. I still don't know why it would work for me then. I added the flag and commited the new files, perhaps now it will work. As far as development goes, there's a lot to be done. Since you're strong in SQL I think that would be the logical place for you to work. If you would, please take a look at how I implemented the persistence and tell me what you think. Currently, I would like to add an access policy to every command that may be issued to the server, and allow these policys to be modified in real time and persisted. So we'll need to create the necessary data transfer objects. So you can one day issue commands like this. setaccess reboot group admin Obviously, reboot is the command, and in this example we would be giving access to reboot to anyone in the group admin. This is a simplified example, but it illustrates what I want, I think. I want to create a core set of commands that allow certain functionalities. Here's some examples. global <text> - When issued will send the text entered to every user on the server. users - Administrative function that lists users, perhaps subfunctions that allow for searching user database, etc... adduser - Administrative function that allows you to create a user.. edituser - Edits users addgroup - Adds a group I'm sure you're kind of getting an idea, the list goes on. I would also like to write load tests to see if the sofware stands up under heavy concurrent use. Tell me what you think. By the way have you gotten the software to actually run and logged in? -Anthony >From: "Oleg Ponomaryov" <ol...@ya...> >To: <urs...@li...> >Subject: Re: [Ursus-developers] Problems with imports >Date: Mon, 15 Aug 2005 14:33:05 -0600 > >Just compare sizes of the .jars if you can within different CVS versions. >If you have in mind particular parts of the project you'd like to be >developed, please feel free to share your thoughts. > >Oleg > >----- Original Message ----- From: "Anthony Salem" <dem...@ho...> >To: <urs...@li...> >Sent: Monday, August 15, 2005 2:28 PM >Subject: Re: [Ursus-developers] Problems with imports > > >>Oleg, >> >>Whew, glad to see it finally compile! Oleg, Whew, glad to see it finally compile! This is a very strange problem and I wonder what's causing it. I do have an idea though! First, I will cvs remove and then add the .jars again, just to see if something happened in the initial add. Thankfully Sourceforge keeps a httpized version of CVS and the files in question are located here!! http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/ursus/ursus/lib/ Download the latest revision, and if those don't work then it's probably my cvs, and if they do it's probably yours. Oleg, Although I have checked out the tree from scratch before, I checked it out again using an anonymous account just in case - everything worked fine. The original .jar files are the ones downloaded from the creators sites, so my copies should be fine. Perhaps CVS or my computer is corrupting the jars, but Vishal said it built for him. Have you tried downloading those jars from their respective sites? I attached the two .jar files as I downloaded from the web site. If you can run these, perhaps the problem is somewhere in CVS... here's where I downloaded the jars from http://www.mathcs.emory.edu/dcl/util/backport-util-concurrent/ http://www.gnu.org/software/gnu-crypto/ -Anthony >From: Oleg Ponomaryov <ol...@ya...> >To: Urs...@li... >Subject: Re: [Ursus-developers] Problems with imports >Date: Mon, 15 Aug 2005 06:51:37 -0700 (PDT) > >You know what Anthony - with your help I finally >spotted the problem and I'm still wondering whether >somebody else has the same problem.
