You'd have to provide a specific example.
Generally though, one uses what the C programming language
provides. This includes the sizeof operator, <limits.h> and
all the rest. C has these features for a reason you know!
What C can't handle alone is pretty rare. If you should
happen to encounter such a problem, try the $(shell FOO)
function in a Makefile.
