I don't see any triangularly shaped buttons when I select one of the tools

Maybe I need to figure out how to get into this "paint" mode but I'm
unclear what mode this is, because... isn't the normal mode the paint
mode? I mean... it's in the name of the application :)
I checked Tux Paint config but don't see any mode called "paint" mode under
the Video tab. Just full screen and different window sizes.
This is what I see when I select Googly Eyes:
