I've made an attempt to do so.  Unlike the config parsing part
of the code, where it aborts when it sees an unknown "whatever=something"
combo, it currently just emits a warning to STDERR, and proceeds.

Here's what I put in mine, for example:

  # Generated by tuxpaint-config version 0.0.18  <<< ignored, as a comment (as before)
  sysconfig=no   <<< accepted (as before)
  _roor=oror     <<< ignored (as before), now with a warning
  roro=roro      <<< eventually quits with an error (as before)
  roror          <<< ignored, with a warning (rather than crashing)
