About not loading system fonts and run just with the ones that come with
tuxpaint, you should start tuxpaint with the "--nosysfonts" parameter.

Please check http://tuxpaint.org/docs/known_issues/ to see if there is
something that may help you.

You could also test the beta binaries for the new upcoming version at
http://z1.plala.jp/tuxpaint/testing/
and tell us if the problem you have is still there.
