Whoa! I have tried this as an experiment, but all the release candidates
used SDL_ttf-2.0.8.  I've changed the version of freetype a few times
(to no effect) and rc6 has a slightly patched SDL_ttf-2.0.8 to work with
freetype-2.2.1.
