Sorry --- replying to myself!

I moved over to an admin account and ran it there; worked fine. Then moved
back to the original account, and it worked fine there too.

Could it be that the font.config install that's performed automatically is
on a "whole machine" basis, and requires admin status to run? Probably a
good idea (security wise) --- but also a note to that effect would be handy!
