Hi John, Yes, I just saw 4 entries in the tux4kids task. Hi David, Can you add more task for the tux4kid project in GCI? Thanks. Hey guys, I am a grade 2 teacher and I have been using TUXMATH. In my classes I do not teach rote-learning. Instead I teach strategies and TUXMATH is a great way for them to apply the strategies in addition and subtraction that I teach. I have my students use the training section where they start simply by typing in numbers then go things like addition 1-3 and so on. I like how it keeps track of which levels students have completed. This is a great chance for me to see how the students are doing.... The only problem is that some of the levels are really really long. For example, sums to 15 has the students doing over 200. Many students can not do enough of these during the time they have. I would say 75 is a good number. I get the idea that the levels should get harder, but I am not sure if making the levels longer achieves this. Is there a way for me to decrease the number the students need to complete? Thank you Don Peterson Grade 2 teacher Sidney Elementary |

As I see here, I think some of the kids are starting the task right now because I see some questions and post here and also in the alioth forum. I think we need to continue this. This is a great idea. Hello everyone, Just putting out an "all points bulletin" for anyone who might be able to chip in for Google Code-In (formerly GHOP), a sort of "GSoC Jr." for students 13-18. I've had very little time for Tux4Kids in the last couple of weeks, but we managed to get signed up and get a profile created. However, we have no other mentors so far (not that I have done much of anything to spread the word). Tonight I am trying to get our tasks entered into Melange ahead of the start of the program tomorrow. If anyone wants to volunteer, please go to http://www.google-melange.com/gci/org/apply_mentor/google/gci2010 and sign up. As it stands now, I'm thinking we are going to have to back out on participating, unless at least a few folks step forward. It won't look good, but it would be worse to have a bunch of students get started on tasks that I won't be able to keep up with. David |

Hi, I would translate the last English remains in tux math, like the Help, the Main Menu and the description of factroids. I would also translate the Tux Paint Config Dialog into the German language. After completing the Tasks i will decide if there is a chance to become familar enough with C++/SDL (already started) in the given time to start and complete a Code-Task as well. Hi, Yeah, Jesus is right. You must know some C stuffs to do the coding task. I think learning C language is not that hard for you because you already have a programming background in Java and they have some small similarities in native syntax. Hi, Good day. I just want to ask a request to give more details about this coding task in google code in : "Factoroids - Make comets come in "waves" of different groups of factors". What is meant by "waves"? Does it mean that when the level starts, the comets will come in from the outside of the screen approaching the ship? Please advice. Many thanks and regards, kiko |

Hi Markus! Please, let me know if you want more information about factoroids or/and TuxHistory tasks! I suggest you to study C and SDL to be able to do the coding tests. Java is a good language, but C is very different to Java in coding methodology, and of course C is a low level language. If you want to do coding work, you *must* know C. Hi, I'm interest to solve some tasks from the Google Code-IN Competition. I have created me a profile on the page. What is the next, what I must do? I can translate some text to German if it necessary. E.g. I have seen that there are some English fragments in the German Version of Tux Math and Tux Paint. In my spare time I support a youth <http://dict.tu-chemnitz.de/english-german/youth.html>club <http://dict.tu-chemnitz.de/english-german/club.html>in Computer Problems, so I think it is also possible to install the Tux4Kids package on the PC's in the club, so that the kids can learn something with the Program. In my apprenticeship I mainly do Java programming, so I have some programming practice and I think I can dig into some of the Code-Tasks as well. Markus |

Yikes indeed! Should have followed up after the initial application, my apologies. It looks like I've been automatically "invited" to be an admin; I think I'd best ignore that? The next 2 weeks are comically busy for me (final exams, packing, flying to interviews in Seattle *and* Mountain View, arriving home on 11/22, arriving in Wisconsin on 11/29), but I'll keep my ears open for anything I can pitch in with. -Brendan On Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 8:01 AM, David Bruce <dav...@gm...> wrote: > Hi Scott, > > On Fri, Nov 12, 2010 at 2:52 PM, scott mc <sco...@gm...> wrote: >> David, >> I noticed that tux4kids was the only org that hasn't completed their >> profile yet, maybe you missed it? >> http://www.google-melange.com/gci/program/accepted_orgs/google/gci2010 > > Yikes! Hi, A preliminary build of tuxmath-1.9.0 for windows is posted on Alioth. It seems there is no longer an option to restrict the download to logged-in members only, so anyone who gets to the "files" page can get it. However, the easy "Downloads" page still points to the older version, so hopefully there won't be too many people in the general public who download this build and get upset because the LAN play doesn't yet work quite right. Hi, the limit on alioth has been raised to 30M (including the overhead for POST, so a bit less in reality...) If we need more we should simply ask again. cheers, Holger |

The new tuxmath-1.9.0-win32-installer.exe is about 18 MB, which appears to be too big to post on Alioth. IIRC, our file size limit was increased to 15 MB a year or two back. We can ask to move it up to something higher. If the Alioth admins are reluctant to make another extension for us (for *Windows* builds, at that), we could put them at Sourceforge instead. I'd rather stick with Alioth for philosophical reasons, if possible. David |

Hello all, I believe that the latest tuxmath (using t4k_common) is nearly releasable. The linux build works without apparent problems, AFAICT, and can be built with either autotools or cmake for both t4k_common and tuxmath itself. I have put together a nearly fully-automated crossbuild process for tuxmath using mingw-cross-env. There are some scripts in tuxmath's git repo under buildw32/ which set up the mingw-cross-env build environment and build the tuxmath installer file itself. They seem to work properly on my machines. I have done some initial testing of LAN play, and it partially works: 1. A windows XP client properly detects a tuxmathserver running on a linux machine, and can play a network game. 2. A windows machine can run the server from within tuxmath, and it will be detected by a linux client, but the server name doesn't come through correctly. 3. On windows, if the server is started within tuxmath, it does not get detected if you try to join the LAN game from within the same instance of tuxmath (on linux, this works properly). Also, it doesn't work even if the server and client are two separate instances of tuxmath on the same machine. This is all just with the machines I have at my house tonight (a work laptop and my collection of home linux boxen). So, I don't know for sure whether two windows machines can play against each other. So, if anyone else wants to test this out, I would welcome any feedback, particularly if you can pinpoint the problems. I'm reluctant to post this as a public release just yet with some known obvious bugs remaining, but I can put up the crossbuild on Alioth so it is only visible to logged-in Alioth members/guests. Best, David Bruce |

follow-up - I've pushed a couple of fixes (the missing el.po file and mismatch in the location of mingw-cross-env between setup_mingw-cross-env.sh and tmwin.sh), and it appears to work "out of the box" at least on this laptop. The current hard-coded location is /opt/mingw-cross-env, easily reset by changing the variable MINGW_DIR in the scripts. btw, setup_mingw-cross-env.sh starts off by removing any previous installation in /opt/mingw-cross-env, and it takes a good while to build the replacement, so use this script with caution. It could be made safer, for sure. David |

Hi Brendan et al, I've gotten most all the issues worked out to create the win32 crossbuild of the current tuxmath that uses t4k_common. It would be helpful if a few folks could test out the process and see how it works, as well as testing the result win32 build. 1. I've posted a couple of t4k_common tarballs on our alioth site, the latest being 0.0.3. There were a few things that created errors with static linking that were not problems when t4k_common was used as a shared library. Mainly, there were still some duplicated variables in tuxmath and t4k_common, plus the pkg-config file for t4k_common needed more detailed info about dependencies. 2. I've written a basic t4k_common.mk file for use in mingw-cross-env. This file has been added to both the tuxmath and t4k_common repos. To build t4k_common as part of mingw-cross-env, we just place a copy of this file in e.g. /opt/mingw-cross-env/src, then go to the main mingw-cross-env dir (e.g. /opt/mingw-cross-env) and run "make t4k_common", which should build t4k_common and all dependencies. 3. In the tuxmath repo, there is a buildw32 directory that has some scripts that can be used to do the build. To set up the mingw-cross-env installation, just run "./setup_ming-cross-env.sh". You may want to edit $MINGW_DIR in the script to the location of your choice. The script basically does everything in #2 above. After that, you can run "./tmwin.sh" which should cross-build tuxmath and create an executable installer. (At the moment, there is an unrelated error from a missing "el.po" file that I didn't get pushed yet. That should be fixed as soon as I get home). If interested, I would recommend looking at the individual commands in the scripts to get a better feel for what is going on. The resulting build appears to work fine, including SDL_Pango (a first for us on Windows), but there is one serious bug in the form of a deadlock that appears if the player makes the "Hall of Fame". I haven't tested network play on Windows yet, but it is supposed to be supported. Regards, David |
