I see there's not much recent activity (as in no posts since January 2017) on the trn-users mailing list. I just did something, and I wonder whether anyone else has done it before. I set up a news server on an lxc container on my workstation, and created newsgroups, initially corresponding to a few mailing lists I had subscribed too. It is a very unsociable news server, importing and exporting nothing. Just using "mailpost" to turn a few of my mailing list subscriptions into very private newsgroups. (I use "getmail" on another lxc container to feed a procmail script which sends messages to appropriate aliases I have set up on the news server container). trn (trn4), used on my private news container, works well as an interface for that. (I have actually allowed access from any other container on my workstation also). Some lists give you non-trivial trees for some discussions. But I began realizing I could probably skim much of my incoming more efficiently if I posted it all to even more fake local newsgroups. That experiment has only just started, though. Prior to this, I began experimenting with a procmail-driven filter to generate occasional summaries of mailing list activity for me (number of postings with various subjects). That worked reasonably well, but almost seems like it might be redundant if trn4 really becomes my primary means of reading mail. (Replying still needs to be done by finding the corresponding message on a mail-saving host or container). All this sort of suggests that maybe trn4 could be adapted to work directly from a source of email, instead of news. Although, especially if you want cross-posting (which I currently do do), there seem to be advantages to having the news reader forms of the posts as tangible entities. Adrian Pepper arp...@uw... |
