Hi, I'm right now trying to get Trinux to be a Nessusd server as well as throwing a minimal-X onto it (yeah ... i know about the memory strain). But i have three problems ? - Where would i go to get the slackware 7.1 ISO images (can't get them from slackware) as they apparantly form the base for trinux. - How would i go about packaging new files for use in trinux ? - How would/should libraries be integrated and where ? How can i add the libraries to trinux ? Btw. do anyone know of any bzip and framebuffer/newer svgalib trinux packages out there ? Best Regards Lasse K. Christiansen |

John, I don't know why you talk about Devil-Linux on Trinux-talk. I am sorry for this cross-post reply... but I have to make Knoppix advocacy. ;-) >From: "John van V." <joh...@ya...> >To: "Matthew Franz" <mf...@ci...>; "Brian Anon" <bri...@ho...>; "TheLinuxSociety" <the...@ya...>; "Alex Genna" ><ale...@ne...>; "Devil Linux" <dev...@li...> >Cc: <tri...@li...> >Sent: Monday, April 29, 2002 8:09 PM >Subject: [Trinux-talk] Business Case for X ( and gcc ;) ) > > > Hello all, > > I have chosen Devil-Linux as the base product for Linux Society operations > because it, in beta format, is both bleeding edge and stable. I guess your are talking about Knoppix from http://www.knopper.net. I don't understand why we talk about this in Trinux mailing list. But I would just like to say the Knoppix is a great linux boot from CD. It is a bit like the French DemoLinux except that this is german (other language available). This might be the only problem [except for the download]. :-) I use it for development (gcc, ...) (to avoid installing Linux on my company laptop). I mostly use if for network security demonstration, because it contain: * Ethereal * Hping2 * nessus * nmap * ... Of course many tools are missing but I have a partition on the side where I compile them. > John, Linux Society Prez > > (also speaking on behalf of Denny, founder) > > ===== > John van Vlaanderen > > ############################################# > # CXN, Inc. Hi Everyone, I have been using the 0.80tburt2.4.5 ISO image for some time now and are extremely happy with Trinux's abilities although i cannot seem to get pcmcia support working properly. My question is: Do anyone know if there are any nessus (only the server), tripwire, aide, tacacs/radius servers, available for trinux or will i have to compile them myself ? If i need to download them then what would be the correct distribution for compiling these binaries ? Then to the classic stupid question ! can i use the old Xdata1 and 2 to run Xwindows for Trinux ? And have anyone thought of using something like tiny-X, microwindows, nanogui for creating a gui frontend to do lots of terminal windows ? Best Regards Lasse K. Christiansen PS: What would be the newest version for using trinux with pcmcia support on a ISO bootable image ? |

Hello all, I have chosen Devil-Linux as the base product for Linux Society operations because it, in beta format, is both bleeding edge and stable. It has also been a pure joy to work with. Brian wrote: > > Is it possible to include a windows manager ... > > onto the CD? Franz: > What is the business case? Why do you need them? Multiple xterms is the > only reason I could come up with... A few years ago, I was promoting Trinux for as the basis for a product plan I had known as the ThinMan. ThinMan has now become ThinMan/FAT and has a sophisticated yet deceptively simple model designed to pull the rest of the 6 billion humans into the Internet fold. I like Devil-Linux in every respect: Its packaging --> tgz Its configuration --> /mnt/floppy/etc.tar.gz Its media --> /dev/hd(c|d) Its f/s protocol --> LVM I have worked w/ lnx-bbc and it is very nice, Xwindows works very well. I would very much like to burn Kloopix but the 600Mb download... Devil-Linux perfectly fits the present Linux Society needs, and time allowing, my next project is to flesh out the Linux Society's Devil-Linux/LSD harddrive to include /usr/bin/X11 and /usr/gcc. This is to create the development environment that we need to contribute to Devil-Linux and develop our own LSD. Linux Society is commited ~not~ to changing the Devil-Linux model since we want to use DL CDs as our distribution... But we also want to contribute to development, for this we will need gcc and probably X as well for multipe Xterms For the time being this should work until we get a development ISO And think of the costs: ISO in CD: 0.50 $$ Floppy /etc/: 0.50 $$ 250-1000 MB swap hard drive: free or better ~and~ LVM: PRICELESS !!!! Multiple xterms is the only reason I could come up with. Well maybe netdude or ethereal would be cool as well. But if you can't do it from the command-line it shouldn't be done. I actually came "this" close to getting X4 working back in January, but. If I every get it working (fixing the ISO issue is a higher priority) Evilwm (http://evilwm.sourceforge.net) will be the default or possibly blackbox. - mdf |

Right. The net bootdisks don't even have IDE/SCSI support so you won't even be able to access the hard disks unless you install the ide-kernel modules - mdf > Since trinux boots and runs from floppy does it need a partition? Hi Franz... Dont know if you remember, but I was very interested in the architecture of TriNux years ago, mabye 1998 as the basis of a product called the ThinMan. Well a whole new-economy has come and gone, leaving me unemployed. Now I manage a group called The Linux Society in NYC. We have classes and operations workshops in the New Yorker Hotel. Right now our groupware is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thelinuxsocietys I'm back in the mini-linux business, promoting the Devil-Linux project. Its very cool, but lacks people-power. I have not had too much success creating my own version of Devil-Linux which we want to create as cd boot desktop thin linux called the "Linux Society Distro" I am curious where TriNux is these days. I cant find documentation and I am wondering what the IDE package is. We have yet to test the efficiency of of the CD boot w/ HD swap as a desktop, but my feeling is that it might just work. Upside is that any box becomes a Linux Node on reboot w/o impacting the underlying OS in any way, except that we carve out some swap, possibly in a VFAT. FreesWan is a nice comcept and would tie together our nodes, but doesnt work thru a NAT gateway. So that leaves SSH tied together w/ BASH or KSH. My initial impulse is to gather people from Smalllinux, TinyX, Tom's ... and all the rest to create a SYSLINUX boot system buildable w/ a script (or make) which would have a plethroa of bells and whistles. Linux routing, peer to peer communications, Desktop apps, DB connectivity.. could be built into the ISO, not to mention the agressive network security mission you embraced. Hi, On the page "http://trinux.sourceforge.net/install.html" I was trying to get the link to the isotrinux shell script to build my own custom network toolkit. The link is "http://www.trinux.org/util/isotrinux" but that fails to come up as www.trinux.org doesn't seem to exist. Whilst I have your attention as I want to customise Trinux (basically add nmap, maybe the full tcpdump) are there any pointers to guides (other than the FAQ entry) or is it really as simple as: 1. ./configure --prefix=~/tmp 2. make 3. make install 4. tar -cvfz package.tgz ~/tmp 5. add it to the trinux package filesystem (I assume linking to glibc's from other systems offers no problems if the version match). Hi, man. Please, read FAQ before asking: 1). 1.3. What Hardware Is Supported? Trinux will boot on any i486 or better with at least 12-16 megabytes of RAM, depending on how many packages are loaded. 2). Hardware Compatibility Here are some of the hardware configurations I have successfully tested withTrinux. In general, it is safe to say that Trinux will boot on any 486 desktop with at Least 16mb of RAM. If you tweak the ramdisk size by editing the ramdisk file on the boot floppy you can make it run on machines with less memory. If you recompile the kernel to support 386's with math co-pro it should work on a 386, although I don't know why you'd want to (I have 386-20 still running at home, so I should know.) -- demON JB> hello! Thanks for help! But I think the explanation shouldn't be so detailed - make most of your time. "Look for ldconfig in baselib.tgz" - it would be enougth. Add base.tgz and term.tgz to the pkglist file. The bindings are rebuilt at the end of the linuxrc script right before the shells are spawned. ldconfig -v (in baselib.tgz) rebuilds libs -mdf > > A question - how to fix run-time link bindings? > For example: I start my trinux box, then manually mount my hdd, type: > #>pkgadd bash > Everything is ok: added and initialized. > #> bash > >bash: error in loading shared libraries: libterm.cap.so.2: cannot open > >shared object file > > Ok, not a problem, fix it manually > #>bash ln -s libterm.cap.so.2.0.8 libterm.cap.so.2 > > The question is - how to automate this process? Hello. A question - how to fix run-time link bindings? I read linuxrc and found there: "Fix linker/library stuff - /usr/sbin/ldconfig". But I haven't found it there. May by pkgadd should do this? What have I done wrong? Thanks. P.S.
