Just found this project online and was wondering what the current status for this project is? I have been using tinycore/microcore, but am looking for an ubuntu repository-compatible mini-distribution. Most of the threatmind links (e.g., *http://www.threatmind.net/secwiki*) seem to be down, or at least not accessible from where I am. Thanks, mpm |

Valerio, Thanks so much for the report! I'm glad to see somebody else got USB booting working. I'll look into making the boot parameters for robust. Persistent configuration files were planned be in the next (0.2) release, but I'll try to include it in the next development build. http://www.threatmind.net/secwiki/UbuntuTrinux/ProjectMilestones Unfortunately I've been sidetracked by a work projects and a new Open Source security project (that actually will use UbuntuTrinux, BTW) that I've been planning so I didn't make the release schedule. But knowing that folks have actually tried the new(er) releases encourages me to get back to work. - mdf On 6/14/07, Valerio Bellizzomi <su...@se...> wrote: > On 17/05/2007, at 22.09, Matthew Franz wrote: > > >If you have held off for some reason, now is the time to do testing! > > Succedeed booting from usb in USB-ZIP mode. So I'm working on a defining what should go in a Trinux configuration file -- basically one .yaml file that covers 80% of the normal things that would be user configurable. Something that is obviously missing is packages. Kind of because I have got to that yet and partially because my thoughts are that (this time around) Trinux will be monolithic (not modular like before) and that a well documented and flexible build process (obviously not there) would supplant the need for packages the way they were core to the distro before. Let me know if I missed something http://www.threatmind.net/secwiki/UbuntuTrinux/ConfigFile Anyone should be able to edit this... Thanks, - mdf -- Matthew Franz http://www.threatmind.net/ |

http://www.threatmind.net/secwiki/UbuntuTrinux/BootProcess Basically the usb drive behaves just like a floppy (MS-DOS/vfat formatted and you run syslinux on it from either Windows or Linux) I've confirmed that is works on one (of my 3) USB drives (1 GB Imation) on a Dell Latitudes D600/510 and Compaq DL380 G4 Servers. I used syslinux from Windows (XP) to install the boot loader (ldlinux.sys) Partitioning and formatting (and running syslinux /dev/sdb1) one of my other drives did not work but I'm not sure if is the drive or fdisk/mkdosfs/syslinux from Linux. In any case the process appears to be more finicky than I would like so I'd love to see how this works for others. I copied the kernel/initrd from the iso at http://www.threatmind.net/ubuntutrinux/ubuntutrinux-core-2.6.20.7-042207.iso (BTW, these is actually a decent release with a working dhcp client (dhcpcd, you have to run it yourself) tcpdump, ngrep, hping2, links, ntpdate, trafshow) and some other stuff. This should run on Pentium classics and up (sorry i486) and it is only using about 22megs in ram. - mdf |

Greetings, Mr Franz, sorry that I wanted to take over your distro :-). I have started some research into boot diskettes and LFS, but I quickly ran out of time, being a first year university student. Maybe I would have done something over the summer... Anyway - feel free to ask me to do some testing, scripting or packaging. My vision is running Trinux on my laptop - Pentium 75 / 40MB RAM with Prism2 WLAN and 3C589 LAN cards, for the purpose of (W)LAN scanning and testing, as I do now, but being able to compile new software for it. Needless to say - it has no CDROM, USB or stable network; I boot from the HDD with loadlin. Besides that, I can put together various testing configurations from my ever-growing junkpile - anything in the range from 286 to Athlon64 (with the sad exception of PII). I've already learned a lot just in the past week or so about the new kernel ramdisk, cpio and lot's of cool new stuff in Busybox. > even though it is still useful, it really is a relic which is better > replaced than updated. Well I'm completely starting from scratch -- well actually from the Debian/Ubunut initramfs scripts then gradually ripping everything out to the minimum. I guess the key challenge (and where I can use a lot of help) is narrowing down which features are most useful and important to potential users. I'd like to find a niche for Trinux again, knowing full well that the distribution landscape is quite different now that it was in 2000. I really don't think it makes sense for a revised Trinux to try to compete with the Knoppix STD and similar projects. My current thought is that there is some need in the 10-50MB distro space for a distribution (or distribution toolkit) that allows easy creation of special (single?) purpose appliances. I haven't done a lot of research about competitors - Bleeding edge kernels. Perhaps a small distribution that only hosts virtual environments or uses advanced networking features? - Quick (less than 10 minute) builds of system images - What else? > > > It has run old hardware (these days PIII is old hardware) and > > That's not old - I still use a PII-400 as my daily machine! Definitely. All that is required is a gmail account and I add it as either an owner or member. Don't exactly know what the difference is in terms of allowed actions. It would be nice to avoid having to set up a trac server. The google wiki is sort of slow and not as fully featured as what I'm used to with MoinMoin so I may fire up another instance on the box that is hosting threatmind. - mdf On 4/22/07, Robert Whetsel <rwh...@ra...> wrote: > Matt, > Are you taking on any developers for Trinux part duex? That's true. First I had used Trinux for installing Clients via FD over the net - 1 disk for 20 Clients. Now many clients have no FD drive, but they have CD and USB. Knoppix is a very fine tool, but it can too much for such a job. And the CD is blocked in 1 client until shutdown. And USB: in schools (where I work) there are still many computers which can't boot from USB. I have to look for PXE boot too - I know ... That are the niches I want Trinux to use. ------------ I know - it's a very special environment. But Trinux is a tool for many clients within a LAN (or WAN), no tool for a single desktop computer at home. Viele Gruesse! Helmut |

A few of you have been sending some feature requests http://code.google.com/p/ubuntutrinux/issues/list I'm guessing you have to have a google login (thought everybody had one, hehe) to be able to add issues/bugs, but you might have to be added to the project. The google code stuff is a lighter weight than SF. The only real downside is that they only have a 100MB file limit for downloads, but I think you can request more. Also I've started at "core tools" wiki page with specific applications folks have requested. Keep the requests coming. http://code.google.com/p/ubuntutrinux/wiki/CoreTools If you look at http://ubuntutrinux.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/prerepo/mkinitramfs you'll see the build script adds binaries that automatically resolves shared library dependencies (copy_exec does that magically) I haven't decided yet if/when to modularize things. The key driver for modularization (apart from idealism) with the old Trinux was the 1.4MB limit. But a 1.4MB boot floppy is not feasible with 2.6, even with uclibc (which I don't want to mess with) In terms of packaging my current thoughts are to eventually modify/this script to read in a configuration file automatically apt-get installs certain apps if they are not available. Basically having a sort of meta-packaging system that copies over files from the host. And if there are not Ubuntu packages available (or if they aren't up to date enough), then I will build .deb's for them and if the .deb archive gets to be large enough then I will create an apt-archive. - mdf |

Have often thought about > trying to extend/update it myself, but always come back to the fact that Apart from "meeting" folks around the world, the learning was much of the motivation. Hi Robert and whoever else was on the thread back in January. I just discovered this thread you guys had about reviving Trinux :( http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=1169330192.45b290108ae61%40mail.ravensong.com&forum_name=trinux-talk But better late than never. And it warmed my heart to see that other folks thought there is still a place for something Trinux-like inspite of LiveCD/DVDs. For the small number of subscribers (I wasn't one and I'm not sure where all the admin list traffic is going to) there is a new page for ubuntutrinux (for lack of a better name) up at http://code.google.com/p/ubuntutrinux/ and I actually released an iso on sourceforge yesterday at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=3301&package_id=228434 So work has begun again (I had the need for a lightweight ramdisk distro at work) and during the last few days Trinux has gone places it never has before PXE booting and kernel 2.6 and post 1.0 Busybox. It has run old hardware (these days PIII is old hardware) and high-end DL380 hardware in my datacenter at work. Now that wikis are around I think there is a great opportunity to do things right (in terms of documentation) -- the way that should have been done the first place. I'd be glad to create accounts for. Either on the new google code, here at sourceforge, or on my personal security wiki at threatmind.net. I put some pages up already on objectives http://www.threatmind.net/secwiki/UbuntuTrinux/ProjectObjectives These are open to revision debate, etc. for folks that have opnions :) I look forward to hearing from whoever is still around.
