Over the last week the following packages have been updated/added: - rain.tgz -- another command-line packet building tool http://www.tenebrous.com/rain/?uri=about - nfs-client.tgz -- modules for NFS client - netutil.tgz -- added full version of mount to replace busybox applet for NFS support Also raw, unpackaged kernel modules for 2.4.5/2.2.19 are available in the modules directory, such as: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/trinux/modules/ http://ftp2.sourceforge.net/pub/mirrors/metalab/Linux/distributions/trinux/modules/ http://www.trinux.org/modules/ -mdf |

Finally, after flirting with a major release for nearly six months, I am getting very close now. Really the only thing left is to finalize the documentation on the web site and add kernel modules and module packages. Besides, the obvious kernel upgrades to 2.2.19 and 2.4.5 you can see the major features for 0.80 listed at http://trinux.sourceforge.net/roadmap.html. Probably the most significant improvement visible to the user is the laptop-boot disks which should allow network booting with a single disk for common PCMCIA cards such as 3Com, Xircom, Tulip-based, Intel Etherexpress Pro. I've tested these on 4-5 different PCMCIA NICs. Probably your best bet is to go with the 2.4.5 image, because I ran into some problems with a Cardbus RealPort with 2.2.19, but it worked fine with the 3Com's. Let me know if you have any problems. The PCMCIA packages need to be clean up, but for the most part, they work. These are also based on busybox pre0.52 which saved a lot of space. 1474560 Jun 18 16:46 trinux-0.80rc1-2.2.19.img 1474560 Jun 18 17:01 trinux-0.80rc1-2.4.5.img 1474560 Jun 18 14:39 trinux-0.80rc1-laptop-2.2.19.img 1474560 Jun 18 11:46 trinux-0.80rc1-laptop-2.4.5.img These should be available immediately at the following sites: http://www.trinux.org/boot/ http://www.io.com/~mdfranz/trinux/boot/ And soon will begin to spread to the mirrors: ftp://trinux.sourceforge.net/pub/trinux/boot/ # its actually up today!!! ftp://ftp2.sourceforge.net/pub/mirrors/metalab/Linux/distributions/trinux/boot/ ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/trinux/boot/ http://ftp2.sourceforge.net/pub/mirrors/metalab/Linux/distributions/trinux/boot/ I have run into problems with Celeron-based Dell PowerApps (I based on the a few google searches, other Celeron's have run into this problem as well), where you have to pass the memory size to the kernel to avoid a kernel panic with both 2.2.19 and 2.4.x. I will post instructions on the website on how to do this. -mdf ------------------------------------- Matthew Franz mf...@ci... Security Research Engineer Security Technologies Assessment Team |

I've just added a new tool (Vomit by Niels Provos) that converts Cisco IP Phone conversations into .wav file for replay. It can decode from tcpdump files or by sniffing the network. Have not tested it yet, but will soon. See http://www.monkey.org/~provos/vomit/ Should be available at http://www.trinux.org/pkg/ and elsewhere. Or getpkg vomit if you have network package loading enabled. -mdf |

Updated: ssldump - an SSL sniffer New: angst - another "active firewalk - a relatively old (1998) tool for determining ACLs on router/firewalls Last weekend, I got a 2.4.1 kernel working with Trinux. Drop me a note if you interested and if I get enough responses, I'll release the boot disk and the kernel modules for testing. I was quite pleased that there doesn't seem to be nearly the bloat as from 2.0 to 2.2. Unfortunately, I've been too busy at work to complete the "last mile" necessary for the final .80 release. I've heard some complaints about package loading of the hard drive not working (a requirement for Laptop users) so I'm hoping to get that resolved. I'm shooting for an .80 release in March sometime, before CanSecWest/core01 (http://www.cansecwest.com) conference where I'll be speaking along with Fyodor, Marty Roesch, Dug Song, Lance Spitzner, and a whole lot more folks you've heard of... -mdf |

Beside the Midnight Commander and keymap packages by Eric Kuch (Thanks!!!) I've upgraded the snort.tgz package to snort-1.7. Snort should now start automatically, but it still can't be configured from the boot floppy the it eventually will be. I also updated the nfsclnt.tgz package (NFS Client), adding the standard umount which should override the busybox one. -mdf ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 20:00:33 +0100 From: Eric Kuch <eri...@bl...> To: mf...@ci... Because I didn't feel like doing any *real* work on Trinux (like documentation) I've release several relatively useless packages: sound.tgz - kernel modules and sound /dev's for sound cards and amp ( a *very* simple mp3 player ) modutil.tgz - insmod, modprobe, depmod a 2.2.17 kernel image with modular sound support is available at http://www.io.com/~mdfranz/trinux/kernel/bzImage/ If for some ungodly reason you, too, want sound support on Trinux, I recommend adding the necessary commands to probe the kernel modules (modprobe sound, insmod mpu401, insmod uart401...) to the /tux/init/last on the boot floppy. Its up to you to get it working. IMHO, sound cards under Linux are a big pain. Oh yeah, if anyone has any favor console mp3 players (or napster clients) they can recommend, let me know and I'll consider adding more useless packages. -mdf |

A boot floppy for 0.80pre1 has been released and should be available at the following locations: ftp://download.sourceforge.net/pub/sourceforge/trinux/ http://www.io.com/~mdfranz/trinux/boot-images/ and probably by the time you read this in the other mirrors: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/trinux/latest/boot/ etc. Why did Trinux reach 0.8x? - Remote package loading via FTP/HTTP (multiple servers are allowed) - Local package loading from hard disk filesytems (NTFS, FAT, EXT2) as well as slow floppies - Remote management via SSH - Remote monitoring via syslog, SMTP (including PGP), and CDP - Virtual workspaces (ability to load/save a "home" directory from/to FTP/SSH servers) - Support for NFS client - Perl, Python, PHP - A complete set of kernel modules (http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/trinux/latest/kernel/) - Many many new packages (see below) - Improved documentation (most of these new features are documented *somewhere* on the web site) See http://trinux.sourceforge.net/tools.html for a (nearly) comprehensive list of packages that are now available at: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/trinux/latest/pkg/ All of these packages should work with 0.7x. Assuming there are no major problems, the only thing holding up a final release is the completion of documentation. |

It's been a since I've announced new packages, although I've been adding them slowly over the last few months nasl.tgz - the Network Attack Scripting Language for Nessus 1.0.6. The plugins from the Nessus (http://www.nessus.org) work if you strip off the description crap used by the GUI interface. No I probably won't be including them, for obvious reasons. Nothing like a trinux box with 500+ exploits ;) BTW, for an amusing (yet highly inaccurate article on Trinux, see http://www.pigdog.org/auto/weird_linux/link/790.html ) Here's an excerpt: The deal is that this Trinux is a single-floppy Linux distribution. It's got a whole bunch of tools for network monitoring and probing a computer. It's billed as a "security tool," but e all know that that just means it's for BAD HACKERS! Anyways, all you have to do is walk up to a computer, drop in the Trinux floppy, boot up, and you've got a complete tool for [deleted] UP a computer network. It's got all this software on the SINGLE FLOPPY to go mucking around all over a network, doing all kinds of bad things! I don't know what those things are, but they're bad! Of that I am SURE! [ The rest was so obscene I couldn't print it ;) ] -- netsys.tgz - this will be on the boot disk and contains a CDP (Cisco Discovery Protocol) client and a smail SMTP client that can be used to send logfiles, alerts or whatever. The next release has the optional features of sending email notification when a Trinux box comes up with the IP address so you can SSH. I also have a primitive web monitoring capability (useful when you have a dozen or so trinux boxes running at once) ipgrab.tgz - ipgrab 0.8.2 another pcap sniffer sendip.tgz - a packet generator (v 1.3 I believe) gnupg.tgz - Gnu Privacy Guard 1.0.4 - contains a setup script (gpgcfg) for generating an initial keyring, etc. for the trinux host and adding public keys and well as a cool mail script (gpgmail) for emailing ecrypting log files (or nmap scan output, or tcpdump files, etc) Imagine the possibilities. Hourly nmap scans show up from trinux boxes all over the world all encrypted (of course) gnupgloc.tgz - gpg localization stuff (I don't use this, but you might have to) The following packages work if manually configured/started, but are not integrated into the boot/startup/configuation process: bind.tgz - ISC named 8.2.2-P7 dhcpcd.tgz - ISC dhcpd 2.0pl5 serial.tgz - modules for 2.2.17 and PPP binaries, minicom, and agetty (I actually got Trinux working through a console server) *** Don't ask me why I built these ;) These have not been tested sufficiently enough, but probably work (libgmp.tgz is required) fswanbin.tgz - FreeS/WAN 1.8 binaries fswanmod.tgz - ipsec.o kernel module (for kernel 2.2.17) httptunl.tgz - tunnels TCP connections over HTTP (useful for bypassing proxies) I created perl 5.6.0 modules (libdb.tgz is required), you probably don't need all of them. Any perl gurus want to write some documentation for me?? perlbin.tgz - perl interpreter, you can probably get by with this for minimal scripts perlauto.tgz 0 2000-12-10 14:48:28 ./ 0 2000-12-06 22:25:38 usr/ 0 2000-12-06 22:25:38 usr/local/ 0 2000-12-06 22:25:38 usr/local/lib/ 0 2000-12-06 22:25:47 usr/local/lib/perl5/ 0 2000-12-06 22:25:55 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/ 0 2000-12-06 22:26:07 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/i686-linux/ 0 2000-08-22 03:28:31 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/i686-linux/auto/ 0 2000-08-22 03:28:31 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/i686-linux/auto/re/ 109502 2000-08-22 03:28:31 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/i686-linux/auto/re/re.so perlmods.tgz - Perl modules ;) 0 2000-12-10 14:48:32 ./ 0 2000-12-06 20:27:21 usr/ 0 2000-12-06 20:27:21 usr/local/ 0 2000-12-06 20:27:21 usr/local/lib/ 0 2000-12-06 20:27:31 usr/local/lib/perl5/ 0 2000-12-06 20:30:28 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/ 2570 2000-08-22 03:28:30 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/AnyDBM_File.pm 10167 2000-08-22 03:28:30 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/AutoLoader.pm 14640 2000-08-22 03:28:30 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/AutoSplit.pm 22111 2000-08-22 03:28:30 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/Benchmark.pm ... perlcore.tgz 0 2000-12-10 14:48:30 ./ 0 2000-12-06 22:20:55 usr/ 0 2000-12-06 22:20:55 usr/local/ 0 2000-12-06 22:21:14 usr/local/lib/ 0 2000-12-06 22:21:14 usr/local/lib/perl5/ 0 2000-12-06 22:21:24 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/ 0 2000-12-06 22:21:35 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/i686-linux/ 0 2000-08-22 03:28:32 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/i686-linux/CORE/ 1707 2000-08-22 03:28:32 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/i686-linux/CORE/EXTERN.h 1367 2000-08-22 03:28:32 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/i686-linux/CORE/INTERN.h ... perli686.tgz 0 2000-12-10 14:48:31 ./ 0 2000-12-06 20:31:28 usr/ 0 2000-12-06 20:31:28 usr/local/ 0 2000-12-06 20:31:28 usr/local/lib/ 0 2000-12-06 22:15:32 usr/local/lib/perl5/ 0 2000-12-06 22:15:32 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/ 0 2000-12-06 22:26:07 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/i686-linux/ 3780 2000-08-22 03:28:31 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/i686-linux/re.pm 179500 2000-08-22 03:28:31 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/i686-linux/Config.pm 3554 2000-08-22 03:28:31 usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.0/i686-linux/XSLoader.pm .... perlsite.tgz 0 2000-12-10 14:48:33 ./ 0 2000-12-06 20:24:56 usr/ 0 2000-12-06 20:24:56 usr/local/ 0 2000-12-06 20:24:56 usr/local/lib/ 0 2000-12-06 20:25:05 usr/local/lib/perl5/ 0 2000-08-22 03:28:30 usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/ 0 2000-12-06 20:25:48 usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.0/ 0 2000-12-06 20:22:58 usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.0/i686-linux/ 0 2000-12-06 20:26:09 usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.0/i686-linux/auto/ 0 2000-12-06 20:20:03 usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.0/i686-linux/auto/Net/ .... perluni.tgz -- Unicode stuff As soon as I sanitize the config stuff on the current boot floppy (SSH keys, URLs, etc.) I'll burn an new boot image... Hello, I have downloaded the trinux version 0.70 but i have a problem with the mount command. If i try to mount a resource like this: bash# mount -t nfs 192.168.17.17my.nfs.server.ip:/mnt /mnt i get the error message: Mounting 192.168.17.17:/mnt on /mnt failed: no such device of course i created a /mountpoint director before, and have permissions in the /etc/exports file on the NFS server. what could be the reason for this failure?? There are no problems with mounting /dev/fd0 or /dev/hda1; the nfs server runs properly (i think it seems not to be a server problem, i can mount the drive with under a linux system). thanks Christian |

I've burned a new bootable ISO image and it should be available http://trinux.sourceforge.net/beta/ Its the trinux-0930.iso file. I have not tested this so let me know if there are any problems. NOTE: There are some SSH public keys from the boot floppy I'm using that will show up in /.ssh/authorized_keys so theoretically I would be able to ssh into a publically-accessible system from my laptop. This is not a backdoor and these keys will obviously be removed for the official release. Howdy, I finally managed to find some to do some development. I've uploaded several new packages: [snort.tgz] - snort and snort-libs (get put in /etc/snort) -- snort is an awesome open source IDS available at http://www.snort.org. I compiled it with mysqlclient support built in so you can log to remote mysql servers. This is the latest release 1.6.3p2. It requires the next package [libmysql.tgz] - mysqlclient shared libraries [mysqlbin.tgz] - the curses client for mysql (requires the package above an below) [libc++] - libtdc++ required for mysqlbin.tgz ------ I'm also working on a new boot floppy image. Still 2.2.16 (don't want to mess with a new kernel) but it now includes the latest busybox (0.47) which has a bunch of new cool features: wget (saved 40k from pkg.tgz, remote syslogging, and fixed the fork problem with syslog, and more) The bottom line is right now I've got a boot floppy with 38k left and a kernel with FreeS/WAN support built in. I tested all these packages and they should work. You'll have to modify the snort-lib (snorts config file) in /etc/snort to your liking and I don't have it yet so you can configure and automatically load snort. -mdf |

I the first pre-release for 0.71 is now available: ftp://download.sourceforge.net/pub/sourceforge/trinux/ http://trinux.sourceforge.net/img/ Trinux 0.71 (final) will be release on 20 September. Yes, there is some significance to that date ;) A bootable ISO image with all the packages (but configured *not* to load all of them) will be release in addition to disk images. This version will support PCMCIA cards so laptop users are not longer in the dark. Work has begun on Trinux-VPN, an FreeS/WAN based IPSEC compatible VPN. I have succesfully tested manual IPSEC between two Trinux boxes. If you are FreeS/WAN guru (I am not one, yet) subscribe to the trinux-ipsec mailing list at http://lists.sourceforge.net/mailman/listinfo/trinux-ipsec and give me a hand. Most of the changes relate to how packages can be loaded and the fact that the /tux directory on the boot media is now consulted by linuxrc. /tux/config contains files that can be modified with a text editor to change the network configuration, the URL where packages can be loaded, the names of the packages to be loaded, etc. /tux/config/packages contains a list of possible packages (as of this morning) while /tux/config/pkglist is the file to modify if you want to add or delete packages. This file is also consulted if you are loading packages from a CD-ROM. If you burn all the packages from http://trinux.sourceforge.net/pkg/ onto the root directory of an ISO CD trinux will automatically detect it and load the packages specified by pkglist (like network loading). If no CD is found or the package server can not be contacted (pinged) Trinux will default to floppy loading. Please post any problems or questions about this release to the trinux-beta mailing list. * * * * * * * * * From the release notes This contains the boot disk for the upcoming 0.71 release. Assuming you have dhcp and external connectivity, you should be able to boot trinux with this along -- loading packages from http://trinux.sourceforge.net/pkg. Changes: - SIS900 Nic support Added - Sample IRQ/IO probes in syslinux.cfg - Network package loading (user selectable) - CD package loading - Automatic ramdisk configuration - Package initialization scripts in /etc/init.d - Network configuration in /tux/config (boot floppy) - Persistent configuration data in /tux on boot floppy via saveconfig - Numerous new packages available at http://trinux.sourceforge.net/pkg/ -mdf ------------------------------------- Matthew Franz mf...@ci...
