I released a Linux 2.4.26 based boot floppy with USB and SCSI drivers necessary to load packages from USB drives. Simple create a \trinux\bootpkg directory on your USB device and add packages. Downloads available at: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=3301&package_id=118955&release_id=24045 This version of Trinux allows packages to be loaded off a USB Drive. You will need to add the right kernel module for your network device to the modules directory on the floppy. Currently the only driver is Intel EtherExpress Pro 100. Kernel modules are available at http://www.speakeasy.org/~mfranz/trinux/modules/2.4.26/ On your USB drive, create a \trinux\bootpkg\ directory and add package from http://trinux.sf.net/pkg/ to that directory. At a minimum you will need: dhcpcd.tgz dnslibs.tgz baselib.tgz term.tgz The following is the contents of the boot floppy. .: total 1194 drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 7168 Jan 1 1970 . drwxr-xr-x 20 root root 4096 Nov 2 2003 .. drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 512 May 23 15:39 bootpkg -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 590356 May 23 18:22 bzImage -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 607789 May 23 18:37 initrd.gz drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 512 May 23 16:19 kpkg -r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 6900 Jan 28 2002 ldlinux.sys -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1193 Jul 19 2003 license drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 May 23 15:52 modules -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 126 Sep 3 2002 syslinux.cfg drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 512 Aug 3 2003 tux ./bootpkg: total 8 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 512 May 23 15:39 . drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 7168 Jan 1 1970 .. ./kpkg: total 28 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 512 May 23 16:19 . drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 7168 Jan 1 1970 .. -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 19984 May 15 23:48 netmod0.tgz ./modules: total 206 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 May 23 15:52 . drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 7168 Jan 1 1970 .. -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 13081 May 23 15:52 eepro100.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 20883 May 16 20:57 isa-pnp.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2348 May 23 15:52 mii.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 49110 May 23 15:45 scsi_mod.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 8662 May 23 15:45 sd_mod.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 53220 May 23 15:45 usb-storage.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 14722 May 23 15:45 usb-uhci.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 39339 May 23 15:45 usbcore.gz ./tux: total 9 drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 512 Aug 3 2003 . drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 7168 Jan 1 1970 .. drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 1024 May 23 15:52 config -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 6 Aug 3 2003 version ./tux/config: total 6 drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 1024 May 23 15:52 . drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 512 Aug 3 2003 .. -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 13 Nov 5 2003 dns drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 512 Aug 18 2003 dropbear -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 5 May 16 19:11 eth0 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Sep 1 2002 forward -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 12 May 6 22:35 gateway -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 278 Aug 10 2003 inittab -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 105 May 23 16:18 modules -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 51 Aug 7 2003 pkglist -- | Matthew Franz md...@io... | | http://www.io.com/~mdfranz

Once again (one can never be sure how long) Trinux is under active development. :) A new 2.4.26 kernel has been built -- see http://www.speakeasy.org/~mfranz/trinux/kernel/2.4.26/minimal/ Still working on some weird issues with modular IDE support. Modules are available in http://www.speakeasy.org/~mfranz/trinux/modules/2.4.26/ I have been updating module packages to http://trinux.sf.net/pkg/2.4.26 and you will also see lots of packages being updated Released a Cardbus floppy image built on 2.4.26 see http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=3301&package_id=118345 A bunch of old stuff has been deleted and moved to http://devel.trinux.org/old/ - mdf -- | Matthew Franz md...@io... | | http://www.io.com/~mdfranz

Some of y'all may remember Labrea from worm seasons of the past. Anyway there is a security focus article on using the linux kernel module called TARPIT which is much easier and is now included in the latest netfilter package. Fortunately, it was already in iptables so I didn't need to update that, too. http://www.securityfocus.com/infocus/1723 You'll need to install it with insmod /lib/modules/ipt_TARPIT.o # iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 135 -j TARPIT In about 15 minutes I was able to tarpit as many works, have fun :) YMMV -- | Matthew Franz md...@io... | | http://www.io.com/~mdfranz

Trinux 0.890 was officially released (on Freshmeat yesterday). An boot floppy with IDE support and and ISO have been available for a few days now. No PCMCIA support yet. See the release notes for more details and the contents of the images. Today, the following packages have been added/updated: ettercap - upgraded to 0.6b (it actually works, older versions didn't) ncovert - Simple Nomad did a Blackhat prezo on this tool (using TCP sequence numbers to create covert channels) ncrypt - File encryption and secure wipe prog from NMRC thcrut - THC scanning tool Any testing of these packages would be appreciated, because I've only done the minimim. - mdf |

The following new packages have been added: Packit 0.6.0.d (http://packit.sourceforge.net/) Disco 1.2 (http://www.altmode.com/disco/) The following packages have been updated Apache 1.3.28 (duh) Darkstat 2.5 (http://members.optushome.com.au/emikulic/net/darkstat/) Amap 4.0 (http://www.thc.org/releases.php) Other news: The OpenSSH server (opensshd.tgz) is still broken, but DropBear is working great. I wonder if it is less buggy. Security through obscurity works wonders. Kernel 2.4.21 modules packages are coming along nicely (http://trinux.sf.net/pkg/2.4.21) . Will eventually get around to PCMCIA :( Raw modules are in http://trinux.sf.net/modules/2.4.21 Latest initrd.gz and floppy boot images are in http://trinux.sf.net/snaps/ Oh, yeah -- I'll be at Blackhat this week. Speaking on some BGP security stuff. Not sticking around for defcon, though. - mdf -- ---------------------------------------------- Matthew Franz mf...@ci... AIM/Yahoo: matthewdfranz |

[New Packages] dropbear.tgz - small (200k) SSH2 server (put your DSA keys in \tux\config\dropbear\sshskeys on the boot floppy) tn5250.tgz - Telnet 5250 client [Updated Packages] tcpdump.tgz - to 3.7.2 (*) openssh.tgz - to 3.6.1p1 opensshd.tgz - to 3.6.1p1 (*) fileutils.tgz - added split (probably a bit too late to be useful) term.tgz - tic and termios updates (*) Security fixes for bugs that may/may not be worse than the IOS bug that went public today ;) I also built my first 2.6.0 kernel today. Smallest I could get was around 700k (compared to 525k for 2.4.x) so 2.6 support is unlikely without the stuff I'm thinking about for uTrinux. - mdf |

Hi Matthew, Nice to hear about your plans. Now you never mention the ability of Trinux to get the programs over http/ftp. This is the function I liked the most about Trinux. Considder, somewhere in the house (or world) you've got a minimal system with a single bootfloppy. You let it load it's package from your server. So you can give it the function it has to do. I've made a jukebox with it, with IR-remote-control, web-control, and gets the music from my server. So the Trinux needs no hard-disk and is completely noiseless (after booting), only music. With a reboot I can turn it into a webserver, or whatever I want (Just a case of renaming the package on the server). Never have to touch the Trinux system, it has no monitor, no keyboard, no harddisk, no fans needed. And I can place such system whereever I want, as long there's power and ethernet. Last days I started to think about integration of the now cheap USB-PenDrives, lots of cheap memory. People at SPB Linux have a project for putting a bootable Linux-system on such a device. Everything you can imagine can be done with Linux. Where do you want to go tomorrow? greetings, Arne |

Thanks to those folks who finally complained about the spam. I deleted some lists that were inactive and made the lists closed (you have to be a subscriber to post now) so hopefully you'll just be getting your normal share of non-Trinux spam. I'm actually thinking about starting doing some Trinux development again -- in the form of a new project called uTrinux. See http://trinux.sf.net/uTrinux/ for details. I haven't released anything yet and this is more of a development toolkit than a distribution, but some folks might find it interesting. Basically, the goal is to bring together some of the functionality from uClinux and from the development workgoing on for Linux handhelds (familiar, intimate, iPKG) into a flexible means of creating custom Linux (x86) distributions that can be used for a variety of uses: security being one of them. - mdf |

Both of these packages were updated to support 802.11 sniffing which currently works on the PCI Prism using wlan-ng.tgz and 2.4.19/prism-pci.tgz package. Prism PCMCIA packages should be out shortly and then to fixing the kismet package. Ethereal is now at the latest 0.9.6 and I created the additional packages for plugins (which I don't think are needed anyway) because it is getting so large. Tcpdump is the cvs snapshot from 5 September 2002 and also does 802.11 decodes. - mdf |

Folks, Just released another ISO. This has experimental support for PCMCIA (when has trinux *not* been experiment) NICs. I've successfully tested this on the following cards: 3Com 3C574TX 3Com 3C589D Xircom CBE2-100 (tulip) Xircom Realport (Cardbus) RBEM56G-100 (tulip) I was unable to get the non-carbus Realport (xirc2ps) to work All of these were tested on a Thinkpad T22. I fixed the annoying filename problem that affected the previous ISOs. I need to specify -R -J (for Rock Ridge and Joliet) for mkisofs. I also cleaned up some of the annoying debugging messages from the linuxrc. See http://trinux.sf.net/release or http://www.io.com/~mdfranz/boot/ (not sure which is slower) BTW, I've finally got the old trinux.org DNS under control. If anybody wants to host a mirror site and wants a location.trinux.org site let me know. Next, on to wireless :) and updating the documentation for all the changes :(. For those that are interested in helping out with or learning to use wireless tools, I've just created a new trinux-wireless email list. Thanks to all the folks who provided feedback on the last ISO. - mdf |

Howdy, I've released a small .iso for testing if anbody has the time/inclination. It is based on 2.4.19 and my latest initrd.gz. It has booted fine on my Thinkpad, VMware, and an old K6--but I'd like wider testing before doing even a snapshot release on sourceforge. It loops through and attempts to insmod a half-dozen or so of the most common NICs (it looks like I forgot a few old ISAs, though). This does *not* have support for any PCMCIA NiCs. Once this appears to be stable, I'll get to that. see: http://trinux.sf.net/release/ http://www.io.com/~mdfranz/trinux/boot/ It is 3sep02-2419.iso (with matching .md5) and it is about 6mb. Feedback/flames are welcome. I know there is still some funkiness--for example some of the packages are getting loaded twice (I think). - mdf |

I have dhcp problems too. What i do is write down the network info, hit N for no when it asks you, and manually enter it in... i dont know how to actually fix the dhcp thing to work automatically. but if you say no and manually configure it, unless the network card is not supported at all, it should work. ----- Original Message ----- From: <tri...@li...> To: <tri...@li...> Sent: Friday, May 03, 2002 12:06 PM Subject: Trinux-news digest, Vol 1 #40 - 1 msg > Send Trinux-news mailing list submissions to > tri...@li... > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/trinux-news > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > tri...@li... > > You can reach the person managing the list at > tri...@li... > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Trinux-news digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Clayton Thanks for this. I'm having one small problem though. The iso is configured to use dhcp but I'm getting an error at start-up. Looking for eth0 Bringing down eth0 Found static network configuration. Configuring eth0 dhcp: Resolver Error 0 (no error) ... I have tried this on a couple different machines all the same error Is anyone else getting this?
