AFAIK, Tribler uses VLC and thus doesn't depend on any installed codecs. It could be that VLC doesn't run properly in Vista, but I can't test it (I don't have Vista).

We're using our own compiled version of VLC and control it from python via a special interface. This may cause different behaviour. Does anyone know if this problem has been corrected by VLC in 0.8.6b?
I'll leave this bug open so other people with the same issue can easily find it.

I contacted the Tribler team about this problem and it's caussed bij VLC. VLC has a problem running under Vista. The trick is to download VLC and change the output. http://computerbits.wordpress.com/2007/01/25/vlc-media-player-problem-under-vista/
That will change the vlc-dll an so Tribler will play video and sound.
