TkDesk editor tabs

I've tried to look at the list archives, but they aren't available?

What I'd like to do is to have the TkDesk editor display tab characters 
as 4 characters wide, instead of the default 8. I know how to change it 
so that it will use 4 spaces instead of a tab character, but tab 
characters in pre-existing files are still displayed as 8  wide. Is 
there a way to change this? I've read through the editor source, but I'm 
not familiar enough with Tcl, Tk, itcl, etc. to understand everything 
it's doing.
