Sorry, I meant just checking for the newer silent-linking models, rather
than testing each individual screenshot command.

Now that I think about it, though, if there's nothing connected to the
cable, just sending the initial ping ought to fail.  There isn't any way
to distinguish this case -- an error on the SilverLink's end -- from a
reading timeout, is there?
