You're are dealing with UTF-8. Great, it was the thing to do ! 
GTK+ use extensively UTF-8 which may sometimes be a problem...
Well, how do you write your file in UTF-8 ? Which editor ?
The French translation has been written into another charset. Then, TiLP is 
running into troubles. I may have to convert it into UTF-8.
