Since recently, TeXstudio on my Mac keeps nagging me with the message "<file> has been modified by another application" although (to my knowledge) the tex-file is only opened in TeXstudio. Is there any way I can find out what else is changing the file? This is really driving me nuts ;-)</file>

The check is performed against the modification date. You can verify that the modification date of the file has changed. However, it is not possible to know which application has performed the change.

    From: http://sourceforge.net/p/texstudio/bugs/1079/

I wasn't able to reopen #1047 but I wanted to add further information. I was finally able to track what processes are changing the file using fseventer (http://www.fernlightning.com/doku.php?id=software:fseventer:start), which logs everything. When manually saving an edited tex file it always lists three entries (what, time, type, process):

    • my TEX file, 20:19:00, Stat Changed, texstudio
    • my TEX file, 20:19:00, Content Modified, texstudio
    • Folder of my TEX file, 20:19:01, Folder Changed, System
There are no other processes listed accessing / changing the file. Is it possible that texstudio's own changes are misinterpreted as external changes due to timing problems or the like?

There are a few situations in which TXS checks for file changes. They all have the same message text, but dialog title and available buttons vary. So what's the title of the dialog winow you see and what buttons does it have?

Recently I have the same problem here, Mac OS X 10.9.5 and TexStudio 2.8.8.
The dialog has an option to review the changes or cancel, to do nothing.
If i review the changes, its mostly only the last recently changed word. I can provide a screenshot, if it appears the next time.

I am also having the same problem. I noticed this also happens when I run pdflatex outside of TexStudio. Does the change detection also apply to the pdf and/or aux files?

The PDF is monitored and updated automatically. It should not cause a message. I don't think aux files are monitored, but im not completely sure right now.

    1. Are you also working on OSX?
    2. Can you please post a screenshot of the exact message the next time it occurs?
    3. Is it reproducible? If so, could you please provide a step-by-step description how to provoke the message?

Find attached some sample screenshots, when this error occurs. But unfortunately, it's not reproducible (good luck for me, it doesn't appear that often)

I have the same problem. Using TeXstudio 2.10.8 on Windows. And I already was afraid someone was scooping my work and messing with my files :)

    1. Will do
    2. It isn't reproducible. I suspect it has something to do with working in a Dropbox controlled folder, but I am not sure.
    3. Can you recommend software to track file changes, whose protocols would be helpful?

@3. I don't have experience with that myself on OS X, but you may try fswatch:

I got the same Problem. TechStudio 2.10.8 on Windows 7. From time to time a window pops up and says that (the file I am currently working on, master file mode) has been modified by another program and so on. It seems to me (although I would have to test more to be absolutely sure) that this problem only occurs when I work on a mapped (to AFS) network drive, not when working on local files.

Hi guys. I had the same issue. Texstudio 2.11 MBP OSX 10.11. My problem was that I had an alias to the .tex file. Open the file from the "real" file and problem solved. I hope it helps.

    Hi,

I have the same problem here. The folder where the file is saved is synchronized with Google Drive. That might be a possibility.
