Would anyone know how to make python use a new Tk framework that I just installed? I'm using Tkinter and Python 2.7. |

My hope is to make Tk 8.6.5 run under Mac OS 10.4. I know it is old, but I really like this OS. Using the ./configure method did make this hope very close to coming true. An issue with sqllite is what stopped me. There is a patch online that fixes the problem but I haven't had time to test it out yet. On Jun 14, 2016, at 1:42 PM, Gerald W. Building from source is an option if you want. My first comment was why not use AS instead of going through the issues you were having doing the build. I just attempted to clarify what you can do under the various AS agreements. On 6/14/16 10:21 AM, Programmingkid wrote: > I guess it would help if they defined "production use". Nope - it just means that they want you to pay for the commercial edition if you're building commercial software. Basically, if you make money, they should make money. People have been using the "Community Edition" and building their own TCL/TK from the sources to create software for years and years. Don't be frightened by their read me - which is designed to get you to buy their commercial package. I guess it would help if they defined "production use". Building from source code would allow someone to avoid Active's license. On Jun 14, 2016, at 11:07 AM, Gerald W. No, that means you can not install the ActiveState "Community Edition" in a company's production system or redistribute components from it to your customers. You are free to use it to run your own personal applications or others. You are free to use it to develop any applications (e.g. Open Source that you point out that people need their own copy of Tcl/Tk to run). If you are developer working on commercial software, either for sale or for use inside of your own company, then you likely should get the Tcl Dev Kit (TDK) (i.e. pop for the $345) -- then you can distribute your application as a single executable if you chose. -- +------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Gerald W. The current directions from the Mac OS X README file for TK 8.6.5 needs to be changed from using "make -C ..." to "configure && make && sudo make install". The make -C approach does not work. I don't like the fact that they state the Community Edition is "Not for production use". See http://www.activestate.com/activetcl under "Community Edition". As a programmer this means I can't use their software to develop more software. On Jun 5, 2016, at 2:56 PM, gerald.lester wrote: > In what way? > > > > Happy Connecting. I would like to add that I did try to build using the command line, but there were problems. Here are the steps I took: export MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET=10.4 export ver="8.6.5" CFLAGS="-arch i386 -arch x86_64 -arch ppc -mmacosx-version-min=10.4" make -C tcl${ver}/macosx This is the error message I saw: checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables When I remove the -arch ppc from the CFLAGS variable, building works, but I would like to support PowerPC still. |

You may have better luck with the command line. Try cd'ing to the top of the source treea and running: make -C tcl/macosx make -C tk/macosx Insert version numbers as required to correspond to the folder names.
