After installing TCL-TK 8.6.6, I saw this error message when I tried to use the Tk framework in Python: _tkinter.TclError: no display name and no $DISPLAY environment variable Anyone know of a fix for this issue? |

Winfo pointerxy doesn't work on the Mac if the windows is floating or utility type. It only seems to work on document windows. Also "wm raise" doesn't work on transient windows. I'm a bit stuck here since I need to have "winfo pointerxy" working but if I use a non-transient document window, it gets lost behind the main window when focus changes. If I use utility windows, raise works but I lose pointerxy. (raise doesn't work on floating windows) I'm using: toplevel $name -class Dialog; ::tk::unsupported::MacWindowStyle style $name utility { collapseBox closeBox resizable verticalZoom horizontalZoom} and $name -class Dialog; ::tk::unsupported::MacWindowStyle style $name document { closeBox resizable } Under Windows, I'm using "wm attributes $name -toolwindow true" and those windows raise fine and get pointerxy. The pointerxy problem is possibly in FrontWindowAtPoint in tkMacOSXWm.c which uses [NSApp orderedWindows]. I think this is ignoring anything that isn't a document window. Is there a fix for this - could I be using another class of Mac window which gets pointerxy correct? |

Under Windows, I'm using Control+z for an Undo-function and Control+Shift+z for a Redo-fucntion (on Mac Command key is used instead of Control). On Windows I can use <Control-Z> (note the capitalized Z) to bind control+shift+z, but on the Mac using <Command+Z> ignores the shift and just issues the same as control+z. In order to bind to control+shift+z on the Mac, I need to use <Command+Shift+z>. This doesn't work on Windows (Control+Shift+z is ignored). Tk8.5 recognised capitalized/shifted keys (e.g. Control-Z) worked fine on both platforms , they no longer work on the Mac. Is this a known bug? Which would be correct <Control-Z> or <Control-Shift-z? |

Alpha/Transparency of PNGs is not working correctly for me under Tk8.6.6. It's fine under Windows; incorrect but not too bad on some Macs; awful on other Macs. Windows - fine with perfect transparency: http://www.inivis.com/external/badpngwin.png MacOS Sierra 10.12.? Newish Mac (wrong transparency levels but not corrupt): http://www.inivis.com/external/badpngmed.png MacOS sierra 10.12.1 2011 Mac Mini (very bad - corrupt background where it should be transparent): http://www.inivis.com/external/badpngsierra.png The images are made with "image create photo <name> -file <filename>" from png files. I found some earlier references to transparency problems but that was some time ago - is here a fix for this? |

This shell script would have to be made executable like this: chmod +x <shell script file>. The actual code inside the shell script would have to start your binary. I think calling it like this would work: ./<binary name> <arguments if any>. The binary's name would have to be changed and the shell script's name would have to be the binary's old name. Or you could alter the CFBundleExecutable setting in the info.plist file to be the name of the shell script. Is there any way you could try setting the translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints variable to YES in TCL? When I looked up this variable, I found out it was a part of UIView. That is iOS territory. So could you give us some more information on this application you are having problems with? |

ERROR MESSAGE FROM CONSOLE: Detected missing constraints for <private>. It cannot be placed because there are not enough constraints to fully define the size and origin. Add the missing constraints, or set translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints=YES and constraints will be generated for you. If this view is laid out manually on macOS 10.12 and later, you may choose to not call [super layout] from your override. Set a breakpoint on DETECTED_MISSING_CONSTRAINTS to debug. This error will only be logged once. This console error happens when my program is started by clicking on the .app icon in the finder. The main window shows, but it's empty and unpopulated with widgets. The program should open a large window, populated with widgets, but it only shows a small empty window. Oddly, if the program is launched from a terminal (e.g. with Contents/MacOS/<binary-name>) or with debugging in Apple Xcode Instruments, it runs fine and the windows are as expected. It may be a bug in 10.12: http://openradar.appspot.com/28700495 but is there a workaround? |

I have a large program which adds C event handlers for button-press, motion and button-release. This is used for drawing stuff in a window - press, drag mouse, release. Under Lion (OS X 10.7), a user reports that it looks like a button release is being issued before it's actually released. The user is pressing, dragging and before releasing, a release event is triggering. And, it sounds like another press may be triggering before the actual mouse button is released. It also sounds like some key events are being lost - it seems to take a few presses of a control+key before it's recognised. The same program binary works fine under Snow Leopard (10.6.8), Yosemite (10.10) and El Capitan (10.11). As I don't have Lion, it's obviously difficult to debug this problem. My software with tcl/tk 8.5, with the same event code, works fine under Lion but perhaps there's something different about the 8.6.6 event stuff under Lion? Does this ring any bells with anyone? Any help most gratefully received. If you'd like to try the software, I can send you a download link, but unless you have Lion, it looks like you won't see the problem. Andy |

Submission of Summaries Tcl/Tk 2016 will be held in Houston, Texas, USA from November 14, 2016 to November 18, 2016. The program committee is asking for papers and presentation proposals from anyone using or developing with Tcl/Tk (and extensions). Past conferences have seen submissions covering a wide variety of topics including: * Scientific and engineering applications * Industrial controls * Distributed applications and Network Managment * Object oriented extensions to Tcl/Tk * New widgets for Tk * Simulation and application steering with Tcl/Tk * Tcl/Tk-centric operating environments * Tcl/Tk on small and embedded devices * Medical applications and visualization * Use of different programming paradigms in Tcl/Tk and proposals for new directions. * New areas of exploration for the Tcl/Tk language Note: We are especially interested in papers for OS X this time, to complement the keynote. Submissions should consist of an abstract of about 100 words and a summary of not more than two pages, and should be sent as plain text to tcl...@go... no later than September 12, 2016. Authors of accepted abstracts will have until October 24, 2016 to submit their final paper for the inclusion in the conference proceedings. The proceedings will be made available on digital media, so extra materials such as presentation slides, code examples, code for extensions etc. are encouraged. Printed proceedings will be produced as an on-demand book at lulu.com The authors will have 30 minutes to present their paper at the conference. The program committee will review and evaluate papers according to the following criteria: * Quantity and quality of novel content * Relevance and interest to the Tcl/Tk community * Suitability of content for presentation at the conference Proposals may report on commercial or non-commercial systems, but those with only blatant marketing content will not be accepted. Application and experience papers need to strike a balance between background on the application domain and the relevance of Tcl/Tk to the application. Application and experience papers should clearly explain how the application or experience illustrates a novel use of Tcl/Tk, and what lessons the Tcl/Tk community can derive from the application or experience to apply to their own development efforts. Papers accompanied by non-disclosure agreements will be returned to the author(s) unread. All submissions are held in the highest confidentiality prior to publication in the Proceedings, both as a matter of policy and in accord with the U. S. Copyright Act of 1976. The primary author for each accepted paper will receive registration to the Technical Sessions portion of the conference at a reduced rate. Other Forms of Participation The program committee also welcomes proposals for panel discussions of up to 90 minutes. Proposals should include a list of confirmed panelists, a title and format, and a panel description with position statements from each panelist. Panels should have no more than four speakers, including the panel moderator, and should allow time for substantial interaction with attendees. Panels are not presentations of related research papers. Slots for Works-in-Progress (WIP) presentations and Birds-of-a-Feather sessions (BOFs) are available on a first-come, first-served basis starting in August 22, 2016. Specific instructions for reserving WIP and BOF time slots will be provided in the registration information available in August 22, 2016. Some WIP and BOF time slots will be held open for on-site reservation. All attendees with an interesting work in progress should consider reserving a WIP slot. I received, from Miguel's wife, the sad news: "I write to you to tell you that Miguel passed away on Monday June 13 th. He left this world in absolute peace." She also said, to you all: "La cominudad Tcl era para Miguel una querida familia, cada nombre me resuena con mucho afecto y nostalgia. Me emociona saber de ustedes y del dolor que compartimos por su pérdida" Roughly interpreted: "Miguel saw the Tcl community as family, every name resounding with a lot of affection and nostalgia. I am comforted that you share the pain I feel." I would suggest, if you wish to offer Miguel's family condolences, you might address them through his gmail account. It seems the least intrusive and most direct means of communication. ---- For my part, I have been working with Miguel closely for the last 18 months, and I don't have to tell you what a delightful guy he was, how much his intelligence and great good humour added to every interaction, be it work or play. I was honoured to be able to work alongside him, our employer was fortunate to have the benefit of his great expertise and skill. Miguel had been diagnosed some years ago, and fought it to the end against impossible odds. I think he believed that he would prevail, which is why he kept details close and private. I don't think he saw much value in burdening others. I only knew of his daily struggle because we needed to be able to schedule around treatments etc. The happiest thought I have is that he is past suffering. Every time I use a coroutine, I will remember the great and gentle intellect who provided them for us, whom I was pleased and privileged to call 'Che.' Colin. |

FYI, I was emailing with Miguel not that long ago about crediting him with some work he did in the Little language (byte code work, deep dive). He said: "I'm ok. Hospital. Congrats. More later" and I took to mean that he was OK. Stupid me, he was saying he was OK with the credits to him but he was in the hospital. I completely misread it and I feel like a jerk. That was April 21st so he had been fighting whatever it was for months. Again, if anyone has contact info for his family I'd like to pay my respect and regret. Hi, This is sad news. He was a nice guy and a pleasure to talk with at the conferences. His understanding of the byte code engine will be hard to replace. He will be missed for lots of reasons. The Tcl Core Team is saddened to learn that that long-time team member, Miguel Sofer, passed away on Monday, 13 June 2016, after a long illness. His tireless work on the development of Tcl will surely be missed, and we personally mourn the loss of a dear friend and colleague. Our sincerest sympathies and best wishes go out to Miguel's friends and family. -- May he be free and soar, Andreas Kupries <aku...@sh...> <http://core.tcl.tk/akupries/> Developer @ Hewlett Packard Enterprise Tcl'2016, Nov 14-18, Houston, TX, USA. http://www.tcl.tk/community/tcl2016/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Hello tcl-mac, fyi ... 23rd Annual Tcl/Tk Conference (Tcl'2016) http://www.tcl.tk/community/tcl2016/ November 14 - 18, 2016 Crowne Plaza Houston River Oaks 2712 Southwest Freeway, 77098 Houston, Texas, USA Important Dates: [[ Attention! Registration is open. Please have a look at http://www.tcl.tk/community/tcl2016/register.html The tutorials are known. See http://www.tcl.tk/community/tcl2016/tutorials.html ]] Abstracts and proposals due September 12, 2016 Notification to authors September 19, 2016 WIP and BOF reservations open August 22, 2016 Author materials due October 24, 2016 Tutorials Start November 14, 2016 Conference starts November 16, 2016 Email Contact: tcl...@go... * New areas of exploration for the Tcl/Tk language Submissions should consist of an abstract of about 100 words and a summary of not more than two pages, and should be sent as plain text to tcl...@go... no later than September 12, 2016. Registration Information More information on the conference is available the conference Web site (http://www.tcl.tk/community/tcl2016/) and will be published on various Tcl/Tk-related information channels. You have to build python from source, but you don't have to install it. Just copy tkinter.so into the appropriate directory of your favorite python.
