Hello, I don't want to flame or annoy anyone. I'm just curious I my post got through (I hope I made myself clear here. I'm not a native speaker) I posted a couple of questions 4 days ago ragarding some ideas for patches need for the tix port to Carbon-Tk. However I didn't get any response. Since its about changes to the Tk source I can't go on by myself. And at some points I supposes this changes need some discussion first. Hence, I repost the questuions here: -------------------------------------------------------------- I recently found some time to work on my tix port to Carbon/MacOS X. It turns out, that almost all open problems are in the Tk X11 emulation. Therefore I have some questions about this before submitting patches. 1) One major problem was XPutPixel() in tkMacOSXPutPixel.c (XPutPIxel is set to tkMacOSXXPutPixel in a #define statement in xutil.h via XImage ->put_pixel) Is this function ever called in Tk (I saw that it is assigned to XImage ->put_pixel). I think this function is broken. As far as I can read from the man page of XPutPixel on my Linux-System XPutPixel should write a pixel into the pixmap data stored in XImage->data. The current implementation of XPutPixel, however, assumes that XImage->data contains a Carbon GrafPort, which is not true if called from the tix code. I do have a fixed version for 32 bit depth image data. But it should surely be fixed for arbirary depth. 2) In XCopyArea() (in tkMacOSXDraw.c ) there is no support for TKP_CLIP_PIXMAP clipping mode. However tix uses pixmap clipping in its XPM-pixmap code. I have hack to work around by using the transparent mode of Carbon's CopyBits. However in this case all transparent pixel in XImage->data (which is the source drawable in this case) should be of the background colour set in XCopyArea(). In this case, it would be nice to have this color in a global variable (in case you change it) (BTW: the variable of the temporary background color in XCopyArea() is called blackColor but the color set is white ;-) ) Of source it would be more elegant to evaluate the clip_mask stored in clipPtr->value.pixmap. However I don't know how do this with Carbon. And I assume it would be relatively time consuming. 3) After all I do have a running tix. And I do have an ruinning minkowsky (which is the app I do the tix port for). However, I do realize that Tcl/Tk/Tix is much slower on MacOS X than on Linux (on the same box, an iceBook 500 Mhz). I found this really surprising. minkowsky is almost unusable for this reason. Any ideas? BTW: I recompiled everything with optimisation level 2. 4) There is a problem about pkgIndex.tcl-files. On Linux Tcl looks for this files on /usr/lib/*/pkgIndex.tcl. Hence it will find all extenstions pkgIndex.tcl files since they are normally installed on /usr/lib/extensionname However on MacOS X Tcl seem to look at .../Frameworks/Tcl.framework/Resources/Scripts/pkgIndex.tcl Hence you have either to add all extenstion thereto or the mechanism of finden pkgIndex.tcl files must be revisted on Mac OS X Tcl. Or did I mis something ? 5) What would be the appropriate place to install the Frameworks to? /System/Library/Frameworks or /Library/Frameworks -------------------------------------------------------------- BTW: I read in the mails something about Aqua-Tk. Does this mean the Tk port to Carbon or is this another native port to Mac OS X? Yours R"udiger Goetz -- R"udiger Goetz rg...@r-... Hi, I have a menubtton which creates a secondary toplevel via its command. When that toplevel is destroyed, the original menubutton that called it generates "Cannot call post menu while already posting menu", and the application becomes unresponsive. I've seen a few references to similar problems with the Mac MenuButton on the web, but no solution or workaround. Is this a known bug, and is there any fix? This may be a silly question betraying my overall ignorance of how Darwin/OS X is set up. I am trying to port an application from Linux which uses tcl/tk. Porting has been successful, except it will work only out of XDarwin, not out of the terminal window or as a double-clickable application. I think this is because the version of Tcl/tk I have (from fink) depends on Xwindows. Is there a tcl/tk implementation that does not do so? I've looked at the mailing list archives, and there seems to be one for Classic, but not for OS X. Is that right? If you are familar with tclkit, then you probably also know about Kitten. Kitten is a kit of numerous Tcl/Tk extensions - some script, some compiled - that Jean-Claude Wippler has built as an 'add on' library for Tclkit. With relatively little pain, one can get your Tclkit to recognize their presence and extend the functionality of your tclkit. I was wondering this morning if anyone had considered either extending Kitten, or creating our own 'pet' (perhaps it would be called Muffy - Mac Utility For Fun on Your own ... or some better name...). I am not certain what all extensions are available for the Mac - I know there is QuickTimeTcl and I suspect there are some others as well. The one I was hoping to find was something to tie in the Mac's Text to speech facilities to Tcl - so that tkchat could be extended from just supporting the Linux festival interface to supporting Macs as well. -- Support Internet Radio <URL: http://saveinternetradio.org/ > Larry W. Is this an embedded Tcl application, or are you also using Aqua Tk. If the former, you will have to do quite a bit of work to get this going. Look at the Aqua Tk sources to get started. If you are also using Aqua Tk, then I started to think about this when we were doing the Carbonization, but didn't get all the way there. The idea is in the code (which is the core of the Tk event converter): static int ReceiveAndProcessEvent() { TkMacOSXEvent macEvent; MacEventStatus eventStatus; int err; char buf [ 256 ]; /* * This is a poll, since we have already counted the events coming * into this routine, and are guaranteed to have one waiting. */ err=ReceiveNextEvent(0, NULL, kEventDurationNoWait, true, &macEvent.eventRef); if (err != noErr) { return err; } else { macEvent.eClass = GetEventClass(macEvent.eventRef); macEvent.eKind = GetEventKind(macEvent.eventRef); bzero(&eventStatus, sizeof(eventStatus)); TkMacOSXProcessEvent(&macEvent,&eventStatus); if (!eventStatus.handledByTk) { if (!targetRef) { targetRef=GetEventDispatcherTarget(); } err= SendEventToEventTarget(macEvent.eventRef,targetRef); if (err != noErr /* && err != eventNotHandledErr */) { fprintf(stderr, "RCNE SendEventToEventTarget (%s) failed, %d\n", CarbonEventToAscii(macEvent.eventRef,buf ),err); } } ReleaseEvent(macEvent.eventRef); return 0; } } So if any of the individual event handlers sets handledByTk to 0, it will bet passed to the Event handler registered in the targetRef of the event. It is not wired up, however. So, for instance try a patch like: Index: tkMacOSXMouseEvent.c =================================================================== RCS file: /cvsroot/tktoolkit/tk/macosx/Attic/tkMacOSXMouseEvent.c,v retrieving revision 1.1.2.2 diff -p -r1.1.2.2 tkMacOSXMouseEvent.c *** tkMacOSXMouseEvent.c 5 Feb 2002 02:25:17 -0000 1.1.2.2 --- tkMacOSXMouseEvent.c 22 May 2002 06:10:22 -0000 *************** TkMacOSXProcessMouseEvent(TkMacOSXEvent *** 171,177 **** medPtr->windowPart= FindWindow(where, &medPtr->whichWin); window = TkMacOSXGetXWindow(medPtr->whichWin); ! frontWindow = FrontWindow(); medPtr->activeNonFloating = ActiveNonFloatingWindow(); --- 171,181 ---- medPtr->windowPart= FindWindow(where, &medPtr->whichWin); window = TkMacOSXGetXWindow(medPtr->whichWin); ! if (medPtr->whichWin != NULL && window == None) { ! statusPtr->handledByTk = 0; ! return 0; ! } ! frontWindow = FrontWindow(); medPtr->activeNonFloating = ActiveNonFloatingWindow(); This will make all mouse events that are in a window that is NOT Tk's will be dispatched to the Event handler for the window. This is probably wrong, I just hacked it in quickly tonight. Probably better would be to check & make sure the unrecognized window is the FRONT window. This doesn't deal with the other events, like Activate, Keystroke, Menu events when your window is in the front. Adding these behaviors is pretty straightforward, but I have to think a bit more about when exactly to send the events to the unrecognized window... Hi, I am trying to get a Carbon window that I create and provide with an EventHandler to be sent some events in an embedded tcl application. In Win32, all events come through to the handler. On OSX, I am only getting activate events - mouse and keyboard events are siphoned off. Is there a function I can call that prevents this from happening? Thanks. Yves |

Thanks for the reply, Daniel. I don't currently have need for anything in the way of non-ascii encodings, so I should hopefully be alright with the current Simple TK. I did get the fix off of c.l.t. and I'll be trying it this week. BTW, I've just fixed this in cvs so this problem will be gone in the next release. there is however another problem with using 'Simple TK' as a standalone single file binary that we cannot work around using resources: encoding files are not found at startup (fails silently) and thus e.g. macRoman to utf-8 conversion cannot be performed (you'll notice that [encoding system] returns 'identity'). This could lead to all sort of problems when using non-ascii chars. the only way that I know to get encoding file support in a standalone binary on mac classic is to use tclkit. Daniel, sorry for the delay, I was away At 20:02 -0400 on 3/5/02, ma...@co... wrote: >When I use the Wish binary as the Stub, the application created >complains when launched on any other Mac that "Tcl 8.3 is not found". yes, this is because the shared libraries Tcl8.3.shlb & Tk8.3.shlb are not found, if you include them in the same directory as Wish (or in a subdirectory referenced by 'alis' resource #1000 in Wish), Wish should work (but to have access to tcl packages like msgcat or http, you will need to include them in a subdirectory as well, and add that dir to your $auto_path). you may want to look at the mac distribution of the Emu project http://sourceforge.net/projects/emu/ where I've used these techniques to be able to use several small wish executables with different embedded scripts all using a number of tcl packages & extensions included in a 'lib' subdir. You may also want to take a look at my tclkit builds for macos classic (see previous message on the tcl-mac list). tclkit solves all the tcl packaging problems in a much more elegant way using the new Tcl 8.4 vfs mechanism, but you can't use Tcl 8.3 of course... for an example see http://alphatcl.sourceforge.net/updates/mac-alphatcl-wiki.bin , this is the tclkit static binary with a small embedded script that uses package http to download & source an online wikit scripted document. >When I choose to use the Simple TK (PPC) binary as the Wish stub to >use, I get an "Application initialization failed; BGerror resource >or suitable bgerror file not found" error when attempting to launch >the newly created script on another mac. this is due to bgerror requiring package msgcat, which is not present in the resources. I think you've been given a workaround on c.l.t (include the contents of msgcat in the bgerror resource). >So...is the "Simple TK (PPC) binary" the statically linked binary >that I should be using to create clickable scripts that can run on >Macintoshes with no TCL installed? IIRC http://mini.net/tcl/825.html explains some of the naming conventions. Hope this helps Cheers, Daniel -- ** Daniel A. Dear all, I've updated my Tclkit build for MacOS Classic to the tclkit cvs HEAD (8.4-36) and TclTk HEAD (8.4a5) as of 20/5/02. The problems with focus and with buttons not being clickable in the last build should be gone, they were due to a bug in tk/library/tk.tcl that I've just fixed. You can get both a static and a shared build at http://www.maths.mq.edu.au/~steffen/tcltk/#tclkit (in .sea.bin format to avoid problems with .sit.bin) The shared build is slightly larger but preferred as it can load shared libraries (loading code from inside a vfs is not yet implemented on the mac however). Note that incrtcl support is disabled for now, as I haven't had time to update my incrtcl mac port for 8.4 yet. Also available are changed/new projects in xml form and new files for tclkit/mac that are needed to get all this to work. For convenience, I've also posted a full source archive containing tclkit, metakit and zlib sources and projects used to make the builds above (in the suggested filesystem layout). To build tclkit yourself, you'll also need the current HEAD of the tcl, tktoolkit and tclvfs projects from sourceforge. The tclkit & metakit CW projects assume that you have two global sourcetrees '{TclTk8.4}' and '{Tcl}' pointing at your 'Tcl/Tk 8.4 Folder' (as setup by tcl/mac/tcltkMacBuildSupport.sea.hqx) and a global sourcetree '{TclVFS}' pointing at the toplevel 'tclvfs' directory. Hi, I'm trying to use the drag and drop tclet utility to create a clickable script that will run on any OS8 or OS9 G3 or G4 Mac. I have used the web installer to install 8.3.4 on a Mac 9500 for this purpose. When I use the Wish binary as the Stub, the application created complains when launched on any other Mac that "Tcl 8.3 is not found". When I choose to use the Simple TK (PPC) binary as the Wish stub to use, I get an "Application initialization failed; BGerror resource or suitable bgerror file not found" error when attempting to launch the newly created script on another mac. So...is the "Simple TK (PPC) binary" the statically linked binary that I should be using to create clickable scripts that can run on Macintoshes with no TCL installed? Should I be using another binary file included in the distribution to link to? It is very confusing, as no where in the Macintosh installer does it seem to list the location or actual name of the statically linked Wish, although it does imply that the static versions of Wish will be created via the Web installer. By their size, the "Simple" TK's seem to be the correct ones, although the "simple" in their name makes me wonder if they are scaled down versions, hence the missing bgerror resource message I'm getting. Any help offered will be greatly appreciated! Thanks, -Daniel Barrett <<<< Reply to >>>> ma...@co... Daniel Barrett ColorByte Software 10004 N. By tcl as MPW tool I assume you mean a version of tcl that runs using MPW's command line interface? I don't recall ever hearing anyone doing that. I do recall someone - perhaps Mark R. - doing some work a long time ago to get Tcl 7 or perhaps even early 8 to compile using MPW's C compiler. As I recall, it was painful... -- Never apply a Star Trek solution to a Babylon 5 problem. Larry W. Maths, At 18:21 +0200 on 24/4/02, Mats Bengtsson wrote: >Is it possible to load shared libs from within vfs using a >separate pkgIndex.tcl file? Is there a problem only when the >pkgIndex stuffs are inside the resource fork? the problem is not with the pkgIndex resource but the the 'cfrg' resource which is needed for full CFM library functionality; however c.f. tcl/mac/tclMacLoad.c (TclpLoadFile): * See if this fragment has a 'cfrg' resource. It will tell us where * to look for the fragment in the file. If it doesn't exist we will * assume we have a ppc frag using the whole data fork. and indeed this works in my testing (not inside a vfs, just by removing the 'cfrg' resource from a Tcl extension), i.e. datafork only libraries can be loaded from disk, so the same _should_ be true for vfs. there is a problem with merged fragments however, as only loading of the first sub-fragment will be attempted (e.g. can't have merged shared libraries and the like) same problem for ppc & cfm68k fat fragments, separate libraries will be needed for ppc & 68k, with e.g. the pkgIndex.tcl loading one or the other depending on $::tcl_platform(machine) (btw, the comment in TclpLoadFile about assuming a ppc frag is wrong, it's really the current RT arch. that's assumed) I'll look into loading from vfs once my dev. box is booted back into 9... Maybe back in the very old days, before Tcl 7.x, but I have no memory of an MPW Tool version of Tcl. The current version of Tcl does respond to the "do script" Apple Event, however, so you might be able to talk to it from AppleScript that way.
