BUG --- # ./setup couldn't read file "library": no such file or directory FIX ---- The bug is a misbehavior of the "ld" library search based on an additional "s" file option: -rwxr-sr-x dev1usr/users 4476 2002-03-27 22:01:59 LinComp.CVS/setup Why does the BUG happen? --------------------------------- I use LD_LIBRARY_PATH to tell the executable the right POWER-Tcl installation directory. The UNIX operating system does not use this environment variable if the "s" file option is set. The is OK because it is an security feature Why does I set the "s" file option ? --------------------------------------- I don't set this option. It was the NetAtalk tool. This tool is used to share UNIX directories as Apple-Share to MacOs. I use this tool to share my development directory with MacOs. Solution: --------- During final testing I check for "s" file option and create an ERROR if necessary This is an wonderful example how BUGs arrive. You can not really check for ?new? BUGs you can only fix them and create a test tool to avoid this bug a second time Reporting BUGs is the only way to get better software thanks for reporting Andreas Otto |

Google search will provide you with a number of sites -- we can mail you an archive of 1.2 if you are stuck. franc |

Hello everybody, "Compiler" 3.3 beta 1 test is out What's new: http://www.compiler-factory.com/LinComp-CHANGES.html Download: http://www.compiler-factory.com and follow the "Download" link Development News: this is the MacOs 9.1 ppc port of compiler based on tcl8.3.4 and tk8.3.4 . If you know MacOs and if you know "Compiler" you will understand that this is the worst possible case that could happen. Some missing key features of MacOs does really hurt "Compiler" development. Just a small list: 1) no environment variables 2) no command-line 3) no terminal 4) no "exec" in tcl 5) no gnu compiler for MacOs 6) no interface to work with the CodeWarrior C compiler from external applications The usually way for everybody, who has the same restric- tions, was to hire a full team of developers and rewrite main parts of the software or do a fully rewrite and create a MacOs only application. Everything was not pos- sible for me but in fact not necessary. I already have shown that cross-platform software development is possible and "Compiler" use this feature already (my customers love it). The goal was to use a well equipment OS like Linux as HOST and do all the nasty development on this HOST until you are ready to ship your software to the MacOs TARGET. The reason why I need the target is the missing gnu compi- ler for MacOs and no Linux->MacOs cross compiler from Me- trowerks. The MacOs CodeWarrior Ide and C compiler has an xml interface to import previously exported projects. This was the gap I used to link Linux with MacOs. My duty was to use the already available (but until now not really necessary) "export" feature of "Compiler" to create valid MacOs CodeWarrior projects including all the special MacOs files like resources, precompiled headers and project tem- plates. This sound easy but it was in fact a very hard way to get even the basic stuff working. Just a collection of my mis- sing knowledge: 1) I never used MacOs 2) I never used CodeWarrior 3) I mostly use command-line based tools and applications 4) I never used the different MacOs development interfaces The first step was to get even a working environment on MacOs. I start with the TclTk MacOs full development dis- tribution. The first application I installed was tkcon to get even a command line (thanks to JH to provide this very useful software to the community). After I had a command- line I start to find a way to link my central development file-system to MacOs. I only use a central file-server be- cause if you write software for a couple of different OSs and if you don't have the money to feed an army of develop- pers you need a very very efficient environment to get your job done. Linx has already software included to serve files for many different OSs. I use nfs for the UNIX boxes, samba for different flavors of Windows and now netatalk for MacOs. The MacOs support is a little bit difficult because MacOs uses resource to store non binary data in a special file which is not the same file you are working with. In fact every MacOs file is a representation for 2 single files. If you are on unix and delete a file shared with MacOs the con- nection of the 2 pairs get broken and this mean MacOs cra- shes. I think I reboot MacOs ~100 times. The hardware is - really good :). If I would write down all the nasty small ?features? of MacOs my fingers would crash, that is the reason why I stop now. Well one week after I start porting "Compiler" to MacOs POWER-Tcl was ported. An other week the porting was finished. It was a really hard time but if you finish successful you are always happy. I wrote a HOWTO to explain the more technical questions http://www.compiler-factory.com/DOC_HOWTO_mac91ppc.html mfg aotto :) |

I have been reading a part of a tutorial written to teach someone how to begin using tcl and tk. They have wording in their document talking about how to write batch and shell files to run tcl and tk scripts. However, they don't have much of anything about what someone can do to launch Tcl and Tk scripts on a Mac. Is there some place on the web where I can point someone so they can at least 'echo' the words into their tutorial? -- Never apply a Star Trek solution to a Babylon 5 problem. Larry W. I have been writing an app in Tcl/Tk on MacOSX. However, I can't copy and paste from other apps into my Tcl/Tk app. I searched the list archive and found another mention of this problem, along with a reply saying it should be an easy fix. Has there been an update to fix this problem? I've been doing a "cvs update" on the macosx branch pretty regularly, but haven't seen any activity on the development tree in a while. (I'm new to OSX development, so i haven't gotten into the trenches and tried to fix it myself). - brian |

James, None of this stuff was supported on classic MacOS because it was not supported in the toolbox, and I never had time to get it to work well by hand. The misaligned graphics is because the Tk line drawing model - taken from X - is different from the QuickDraw grid-aligned rectangular pen model. The Quartz drawing model is both much more flexible than QuickDraw, and more importantly it is a line drawing model rather than a moving pen model, which is what Tk expects. Using it we should be able to fix a lot of the glitches in MacTk drawing. I started the task of converting line drawing from QuickDraw to Quartz a while ago (it is checked in but not enabled). But I will need to find another couple of free weeks to get it into a useable shape. This would actually be a pretty fun little project for folks that like Euclidean geometry... Looking at the tk demos, specifically at "The canvas item types" plot, I see there are numerous things not implemented correctly on the Mac (tested on MacOS X). I remember hearing that stipples have never been implemented on the Mac, so it's not so much as a bug of the MacOS X version as simply a mac specific issue. Are there any plans on solving these problems? I can see the following: * Capstyle round appears to be ignore - it always come out square looking. * Stipples are ignore. * The arrow positions are often incorrect (see zig-zag arrow in top-left "Lines" plot of the mentioned demo). * Missing pixels when drawing circle chords. * Misaligned graphics giving rise to gaps between an object and its border. * No smoothed lines. Are these missing because the Mac graphics does not support an equivalent? If so then it seems likely that they aren't trivial to fix. I'm currently making use of stipples in some cases, but I'd like to know whether it's worth time working on an alternative for our application. James PS. If anyone is interested in an example of a Unix app which, thanks greatly to Tcl/Tk, has been successfully ported to both Windows and now MacOS X, then feel free to look at my .sig and try the Staden Package. (It's very specialist software so it's not going to be useful to most people, but it does demonstrate the power of Tcl/Tk quite well and so, I hope, promotes it.) -- James Bonfield (jk...@mr...) Hi, I am trying to build an app that already has a working Unix TclTk interface using Mac Tcl 8.3.4 and CodeWarrior 7.2 under OS 9.2.2. I had few problems compiling it, though I had to hack one of the Tcl headers and also provide dummy versions of three X functions that are not emulated. However, when I launch the app, it crashes as soon as the first window comes up with an unmapped memory exception in Tk_DrawChars (called by Tk_DrawTextLayout which in turn is called by either TKpDisplayButton or DisplayCanvText depending on how I launch the app). Is this a known problem? Any ideas how to deal with it? Thank you in advance for your help. Hans Ronne hr...@pp... |

Should work the same way it does for classic MacOS. But in playing with=20= this I noticed two problems. One is that in tk8.4 all the tk_ type=20 procs were moved into the tk:: namespace, so tk_openDocument got renamed=20= to tk::mac::OpenDocument For all the ones that were defined by tk, aliases were made back to the=20= old names, but this one was user defined, so you really can't do this... So you will have to create such a proc, and route it through to your=20 tk_openDocument proc. The other is that I haven't changed the code in=20 tk/macosx/tkMacOSXHLEvents.c to use FSRef's, it uses FSSpec still. It=20= seems like if I do: tell application "Wish Shell" open document = "/Volumes/TheCloset/jingham/Documents/something.txt" end tell in the script editor, I get garbage for the file path. The odoc event=20= is correct, an AEList with one element, but when I try to get the first=20= element as an FSSpec, it is all mangled... If you have a spare minute, it shouldn't be hard to fix this. Just look=20= at the OdocHandler funciton in tkMacOSXHLEvent.c. Otherwise, I will get=20= to it sometime. Hi all, I got a bundle set up under OS X, such that you double-click the app and mactk comes up running my tk script, and such that double-clicking a document created by the tk app will make it run, but... the application comes up without the document loaded. This application was already developed to auto-load documents under Classic MacOS... it also knows to load documents it gets on the command-line (for the unix folks.) Any ideas if/how the name of the document is received by mactk under OS X? Thanks, Jason __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Bgen predates swig. It was actually written by Guido himself about 8-9 years ago, I think, and I basically inherited it. Swig has the big advantages of being easier to use, and of generating interface modules for other languages than Python. Bgen's main two advantages are that it is more automatic (once it has been setup) and more powerful. More automatic: you can feed it .h files straight from Apple, so the next version of Universal Headers just gets fed through it and often the interface grows with the new functionality automatically. More powerful: it can be told about Python objects wrapping C structs, and you can tell it patterns of C arguments and how to represent them in Python: - RGBColor color - Represent as Python (r, g, b) tuple - const char *foo, int foo_len - Binary input buffer, use a single Python string - WindowRef w - Represent this as a Python PyMac_WindowObject object - WindowRef w as first argument - don't generate this as a function but as a method of the PyMac_WindowObject type. Over the years I've been talking to the swig people about integrating swig and bgen, but all of us always have more urgent things to do, unfortunately:-( -- - Jack Jansen <Jac...@or...> http://www.cwi.nl/~jack - - If I can't dance I don't want to be part of your revolution -- Emma Goldman - |

Hi, I put >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> resource 'cfrg' (0) { { kPowerPCCFragArch, /* runtime environment */ kIsCompleteCFrag, /* base-level library */ kNoVersionNum, /* current version number*/ kNoVersionNum, /* oldest definition version number */ kDefaultStackSize, /* use default stack size */ kNoAppSubFolder, /* no library directory */ kImportLibraryCFrag, /* fragment is a library */ kDataForkCFragLocator, /* fragment is in the data fork */ kZeroOffset, /* beginning offset of fragment */ kCFragGoesToEOF, /* ending offset of fragment */ "StdLib" /* name of the fragment*/ } }; <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< in the resource file and it works. But CW does not create it I don't know why The problem was: 1) first the shared Lib was created without resources -> loading time was fast 2) I opened the file with ResEdit -> ResEdit add an empty resource ( no crfg ) -> loading time was slow 3) the problem was, I had the same libs but sometimes the loading time was fast and than the loading time was slow I use a Linux mounted directory for development ( I work on the same tree in Linux, UNIX, Windows and now Mac) 4) If I copy and rename a lib the loading time was fast because the resource is not part of the lib it is stored in the .AppleDouble directory 5) If you compare the 2 libs on Unix with "cmp" both are absolute identical 6) My brain was stressed to figure out a valid solution which fits all conditions above 7) I add a resource file. CW still does not add the cfrg resource into the file. All resources from the file were added but crfg not 8) after some research on the internet I add the solution above into the resource file ===> that works mfg aotto :) |

From my experience playing with both Tcl/Tk (and Python/Tkinter) and Cocoa w/Python+pyobjc, I would say that if you have to do everything programatically (which is the case right now) then Tk is definitely easier than Cocoa, but if we can ever get Python+Cocoa to work with Interface Builder nibs, then Cocoa would be much more convenient. Tcl/Tk is very procedure oriented, and the procedures to create and layout objects are very concise. Cocoa is very object oriented, and was really designed to work with I-B's 'frozen objects' -- if you have to actually write procedures to create all of your objects, then Cocoa becomes more of a pain to use. Jack, I would have tried SWIG for the same purposes. It generates interfaces for Perl, Python, Tcl/Tk, Guile, Ruby and a bunch of others from C & C++. I haven't had opportunity to use it, but other people speak very highly of it. Did you have some bad experiences with it, or had you just not heard of it, or did you mostly want to use a tool written in Python? If it is either of the latter two, then for folks wanting to get quick access to system functionality, going from C headers to Python interfaces to Tcl seems overkill. It would be much easier to just run SWIG on the same headers. BTW - IMO, much of the time C interfaces are not a good match for the interfaces you want from a scripting language - the design goals are different. So this sort of autogeneration is mostly useful as a "first cut" kind of thing. For instance, Tk is MUCH more useful than a straight wrapped version of Carbon would be. Not sure whether this is so true of AppKit since the API's are already at a pretty high level. But I bet Tk would still in the end be more convenient... Similarly, QuickTimeTcl adds a movie object that you create and manipulate, which is not the way the C API's are written, but is more convenient from Tcl... So, I've added the pythonmac-sig to the recipient list: has anyone there ever tried this? But for the case of QuickTime specifically I do have an answer: there is probably little point in getting QuickTimeTcl to work. The Python quicktime module exports about 90% of quicktime (I think sprite tracks are the only obvious omission; at least: extracting or creating them, I think playback should work fine) so there's probably little point in using QuickTimeTcl from Python. [What follows now is a very biased opinion, if you read on you should bear in mind that I'm responsible for the stuff described here] In general I think that looking at whether functionality can be exported from Python to Tcl, especially for the Mac, may be a more interesting route. The MacOS toolbox modules for MacPython are almost all machine-generated: you feed in Universal Headers .h files on one end and out the other end come complete (or almost complete) glue modules. The package that does this, bgen, could probably be adapted to generate Tcl plugin modules in stead of Python plugin modules, but it would definitely take some real dedication to master it. CodeWarrior can. This is the "old style" way of doing it. But there is no reason not to support it. The real issue for you is why you have a cfrg resource (ResEdit will confirm whether you do or not), and why the contents seem to be mangled... Jim -- Jim Ingham ji...@ap...
