There's a third way (well, a variation on the XDarwin approach)

Get XDarwin, then the OroborOSX window manager from <http://
wrench.et.ic.ac.uk/adrian/software/oroborosx/>. OroborOSX integrates well
with Aqua and provides an Aqua-like look and feel (at least, for window
controls). Then grab the MacOSX version of TclKit from http://equi4.com/
tclkit. TclKit is a single file Tcl/Tk/IncrTcl/MetaKit executable - just
stick it in /usr/local/bin and you are away. 

An XDarwin based solution has its problems - the rendering speed could be
better and it doesn't provide the nice look of Aqua - but it does work
and is reasably complete. It also has the advantage that you can display
apps from other *nix hosts.

On the other hand AquaTk looks sweet and performs well - Jim and his
collaborators have done a great job - but, as he mentioned, it does have
its rough edges.

I use the XDarwin TclKit daily (for both local and remote access) on an
iBook 500Mhz G3 - whenever I'm away from my workstation. 

But, realistically, at this stage neither solution is entirely acceptable
for a non-technical user.

Jim,

Could you further elaborate on "somewhat experimental"? I'm about to get
a G4 to work on some cross platform tk stuff, and am starting to gather
information about the state of Tk on OSX. Much of the information out
there seems to be several months old, so it's not clear where Aqua Tk is
or is headed. Your saying it is "somewhat experimental" is a bit
discouraging. Am I making a mistake in thinking Tk is a viable platform
for Mac application development in the foreseeable future?

I'd be glad to help make Aqua Tk work, but I have zero Mac development
experience up to this point and barely know the difference between cocoa
and carbon, so I've got a steep learning curve before I'd be of much
use.

[MACTCL] even more newbie madness

I've been following discussions with only half and eye/ear
for a long time since I didn't OSX. However, my employer just bought me
a
new machine and asked me to port an application from OS v8 and v9
to OSX. Can someone describe very briefly whether there are different
tcl-tk's for each flavor/color/whatever-you-call-it in OSX
and which would be most likely used by non-techie users, if not all of
them.

Note that there is a patch on the blt sf.net project that modifies that
package for Tcl/Tk 8.4.  I would expect to see BLT itself support 8.4
after this weekend, once it moves from alpha to beta release status.

You can use -FTcl and -FTk (that may be wrong, see the docs on -F) to link 
against the frameworks, and add -I/Library/Frameworks/Tcl.framework etc.
Alternatively use ProjectBuilder.  For lots of good clues about how to do 
that check out the Tk project.
You will also need to make some mods to that project, which contains more 
than a few quick and dirty hacks.  In particular it does build Tkconfig.sh 
which most Tk stuff uses.  Also the standard build does not put enough X11 
headers into the Public Headers.  Jim Ingham has been very helpful when I 
manage to ask the right question.

I have been trying to port BLT.  This has two layers of problems:
1.  The BLT source code has problems with Tcl/Tk 8.4a even on X11
2.  I need to look hard at the Wish.app code and pick out how it needs to 
modified for BLT.  This step would probably be necessary for anything you 
wanted to port.

I have been busy on other things for the last few weeks, but I am about to 
have another go having got current versions of gcc3.1 from the CVS to 
compile properly.  If you want the mods I have to Tk, I could let you have 
them.

[MACTCL] Mac OS X Tcl/Tk

I have downloaded and played with the native Mac OS X port of Tcl/Tk by
Jim Ingham.  It's very nice but is there away to use it for building Unix
apps that are based on the Unix version of Tcl/Tk.

I have successfully ported some Unix apps over by using the Darwin port of
Tcl/Tk (that uses X11). Does this port have a libtk.a or libtcl.a that can
be used in building such applications? I see that it has some header files
already.

[MACTCL] Does & work through command line?

I'm trying to get TkMatMan working on OS X and it sends rendering
commands to the command line renderer 3Delight. However, I cannot get a
line like: "renderdl cubits.rib &" to work. TCL or something seems
unhappy with me sending the &. Is there any way to do this?

Right now what Wish dwill do is lock up until the render is finished and
the render window is closed. Then control is given back to Wish.

Also, when I source the TkMatMan script the first time it sets the first
environment variable line then gives me an error. I source it the second
time and it works fine. When I tried to make it into a stand-alone app by
putting the script into the Wish package it would start the script then
immediately die.

I'm sorry if this is kind of vague.

tester for 3Delight, BMRT and Entropy.

You really want the "help" window style.  I just added that to tkMacOSXWm.c,
so if you get a new version of the source from CVS, and build it, you will
be able to do:

tk::unsupported::MacWindowStyle style $top help none

And get exactly what you want.

Hi,

I'm trying to adapt the tooltip code at http://mini.net/tcl/534.html 
to work well on OSX, and I can't get the tooltip window to lose it's 
title. Any ideas?

I don't have a machine to run X on, yet. But after Apples NY event in July
I'll order one. The QuickTimeTcl code is already pretty carbonized (X
adapted)
and the event loop modified to use so called carbon timers to serve movies
instead of the present hook into the event loop thing. This will make four
(4)
different event loops are used in the code.

http://www.tcl.tk/cgi-bin/tct/tip/50.html is a Tcl Improvement Proposal
which has been accepted, proposing that the itcl source code be distributed
in the same tar/zip/whatever file that tcl itself is in.  Likewise, the
itcl binary package would in theory be included as a loadable extension
in the same file as a binary tcl distribution.

However, the problem is this.  No itcl champions have stepped forward to
implement this TIP - and it's been nearly a year since it was first proposed.

I don't know if there ever will be someone with the time and resources to
do this.

I sent him mail asking for the status.

Anyway, perhaps dropping the Tix dependency would be a more direct=20
solution... =46rom insight/gdb/gdbtk/TODO:

I think insight only uses Tix for the Watches window. So, what's the=20
status of BLT for Mac OS X?

	sorry for the crosspost. I'm trying to find what stage TCL as an OSA
component in OSX might be at - assuming it's at something other than
"hmmm nice idea" of course! Intrigued by a recent thread on a mailing
list that lead to [here

quick google of clt and found it has been several years since the
subject was discussed.

allowing me to write TCL scripts to control

extension - but it appears OS9/win only ?

I have to do an
    % update
here to get
    % Got new connection sock13 from 127.0.0.1 at 
49206 , 
but only in Tcl8.4 run in the Terminal!
The Wish8.4 version doesn't need me to update! Why 
is that?
Further: the port number 49206 is obviously wrong as it 
should be 2444, right?

actually, core-8-3-1-branch in my instructions is correct because it 
is the cvs branch tag for the 8.3.* releases, which tags everything 
in the 8.3.* series (e.g. the current core-8-3-1-branch is newer than 
8.3.4 and will eventually be released as 8.3.5).
the tag for 8.3.1 would be core-8-3-1 (note no -branch) and the tag 
for 8.3.4 is core-8-3-4 ...

Is there any service running on 2444?  You can't open a client socket if no
server for it exists.  This works fine for me:

In one terminal:

% proc gotConnection {newChan host port} {
puts "Got new connection $newChan from $host at $port"
}
% socket -server gotConnection 2444
sock12
% Got new connection sock13 from 127.0.0.1 at 49206
% gets sock13 line
22
% set line
Hi there little buddy.

In another:

My latest problem is that I can't open a tcl socket in Mac OS X.
What happens is:

	% socket localhost 2444
	couldn't open socket: connection refused .

I thought it was the firewall, but turning it off didn't help. Is it a bug in the tcl implementation, maybe?

R=FCdiger Goetz <rg...@r-...> is working on Tix.  Sounds like he has gotten
a good ways along.  If you are interested in this, he might appreciate a
hand.

Then all the way to Insight, this will take some more grotty configury work=
,
since Insight really wants to build with a version of Tcl that lives in the
Cygnus source tree.  Trying to get it to build with another Tcl is not
trivial, and getting 8.4 into the Cygnus tree will similarly be a bit of
work.  I am very unlikely to do this, since I now work on the PB debugger,
and would prefer to spend my extra time making that work better, but still
it would be a worthwhile project.  If you are interested, have at it!
