Hi Stefan, yes TaalPulse does run at least on some PDAs, currently the list of devices that are known to work is a bit short: http://taalpulse.net/download.html#InstallPDA As far as I'm concerned I'm running it on a Compaq iPaq 3970 under Linux and it works fine. I know that some people managed to make it work on Windows Mobile 6 devices, and some people had problems make it work on Windows Mobile 5 devices. As far as exact requirements are concerned, I must say that I don't really know what is the minimum, but the 3970 is a rather old device so I guess that with respect to hardware, anything with the same characteristics should be good enough. Hi Bhuvanesh, I don't know of any update of the Squeak VM for WinCE/WM. There is some info on this page: http://www.is.titech.ac.jp/~ohshima/squeak/WinCE/ Can you try some of the VMs there and tell us if it works? With respect to the log file you sent, I'm sorry but I can't make much sense of it, actually I'm not that used to Squeak so I don't know if the exception that is reported is the cause of your problem... Hi Bhuvanesh, Unfortunately I have no experience with Windows Mobile so I'm afraid I will not be of much help (I use Linux on my PDA). I know that several people successfully run Taalpulse with WM, however. What is the memory use screen you refer to? Is there some sort of command prompt on WM, like there is in desktop versions of Windows? If there is, you could try launching the Squeak executable giving as a parameter the path to the image file. Hi, I have been trying to use Taalpulse on Windows Mobile 5, on a Dell Axim x51v PDA. After I select the image file and click "GO" in the memory use screen, the screen either goes blank or has random colors at the bottom. It seems that alpha version of Squeak might not be compatible with WM5. Any idea how to resolve this issue? Thanks in advance, Bhuvanesh |

Hi Tony yes I downloaded all the samples you can remove them from your site now, thanks a lot for providing them! Unfortunately I have not had time yet to include them into TaalPulse, and as things are going I will not have time to do that in March either... sorry about that. Have a good holiday! When you get back, you'll find shortened aif files with loops here:- http://pagesperso-orange.fr/tony.c/AIFloop.zip full length aifs here http://pagesperso-orange.fr/tony.c/AIFfullstereo.zip and the madhuvanti redone with loops here http://pagesperso-orange.fr/tony.c/madhuvantifive.zip I haven't had time to redo the Sarangi from scratch, but I've chopped the front off the files to give more attack, and it doesn't sound much worse than when I try to play it. As for the loops, they beat a bit, but I don't think I can do much better. I think looping best suits synthesized sounds that don't have such peculiar wave forms. Anyone wanting to play with these is most welcome. I suppose I have copyright, but it is hereby waived :-) sorry about the pun. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Guillaume Pothier" <gpo...@gm...> To: <taa...@li...> Sent: Saturday, February 02, 2008 1:35 AM Subject: Re: [Taalpulse-user] Expanding the options Okay! I tried a bit of looping yesterday evening - not totally horrible, but not totally nice either. The problem is the decay - if you look at the wave forms, there is a lot of up and down, so a clean loop is difficult to place. On the sitar, there is just down, so you inevitably loop back to a louder part. It's quite different from the melodica, where the wave form presents itself as a nice clean rectangle. Affaire à suivre ! I see. I'll have a look. Yup, Guillaume, I was going to ask if you wanted aiff format for the final versions - I'm pretty sure there's something on this machine that will do that. As for looping, I haven't added any. Most of the samples are over 2 seconds long, and that should be enough for most things. I'll have a go (except with the sitar, for obvious reasons) if you like. I'll keep working on the sarangi - I think I basically need a good open C on the main playing string, but it is a horribly temperamental thing. The quality of the G string is so different that if the lehra goes below open C, the result is disturbing rather than helpful, and I'd prefer not to talk about the noise the bottom C string normally makes. I'll also try it over a drone. I'm not sure I'll be setting up the recording kit again before the end of next week, though. I noticed that you've got a full arpeggio CEGC for your samples - is this necessary, or will your programme adapt to fewer (or different) notes? For example the flutes are DF#AD, and the sheng AEC#A, and as I've said, getting four good samples out of the sarangi in one sitting is not proving easy! Hey Tony that's really cool! I particularly the Tung Xiao ones. Regarding the sarangi, some of the notes sound good (the sharp ones it seems) and other not so good, do you think it is possible to improve? When you make the final samples, can you create them in aiff format with the sustain looping information? I could do that myself if you can but my loops do not usually sound really good... I've just uploaded a test recording using the Madhuvanti lehra so you can give me comments and suggestions before I send the straight samples. The order is 1) Chinese Tung Xiao (Shakuhachi-style) cardioid ORTF (forgot to press record for the omni ;-( ) 2) Sitar omni 3) Chinese Tung Xiao (plain style) omni 4) Sarangi cardioid ORTF (omni was horrible and I didn't have time to improve) 5) Chinese Sheng omni I can hear a bit of traffic on the sitar, and the sarangi is "best so far" - it's a bit squeaky, but then they are, aren't they. No added reverb has been applied. The samples were stereo, but when I turned them into soundfonts, they looked mono. The output from Timidity is stereo, but it looks as if there is simply a bit of L/R delay. Don't bother trying to recreate samples, as once things are neater I'll upload them anyway. If I have time, I'll try and produce something with pitchbends/meends in the next few days. Right. I've done a few new samples and am now processing them. Unfortunately I picked up considerably more noise than I was expecting. The sarangi is the least satisfactory, but seems happiest if I only use the open C, G and C1 on the top string - I haven't tried them over a drone yet, which should calm it all down. I've also done a sitar, and two Chinese vertical flutes (one of them is like a shakuhachi in appearance). I may redo my sheng. They should be available by the end of the weekend - with luck. Hello team, Yes I think Sarangi would be much appreciated by people worldwide; I often get enquiries for lehara for that instrument, based upon the one movie clip on my site. I have a sample of Ustand Sultan khan playing a drut tintal lehara , which I looped for my demo movie, but I am not sure that this would be approved by the record company...! Thanks for your good work thus far, Jonathan >Firstly hello to all six of you, but also many thanks to Guillaume >for providing this little gem which is helping me move up the tabla >playing scale from miserably awful to just bad. > >I've noted the comments about the possibilities of adding things >(like tunings, meends etc), and I'm trying to follow the >technicalities of it, but while I do that, I thought it might be an >idea to offer a couple of things. Hi Tony, Yes it would be a good idea if you can provide more instruments. I already got harmonium and new tabla samples by Shawn Mativetsky, I have yet to include them in TaalPulse (I don't have much time right now), so if you like you can make the samples available somewhere and I'll include them asap! Hi, thanks for your interest! > > 1) How do I modify startup defaults, for example my Teacher's gharana > (Itawa) uses slightly higher tuning (A = 448 Hz) , and everyone pretty > much uses "SA = C#". I would like to change the tuning to 448 Hz and > root to C# instead of C.. It's really easy: if you run TaalPulse on a desktop computer, you can easily save the state of the program: make the window a bit larger and click outside of the area occupied by TaalPulse; this should bring a menu, and one of the options is Save. Choose that, and the next time you restart TaalPulse the current settings will be loaded. If you run TaalPulse on a PDA, then you must first do the operation above on a desktop computer, and then upload the modified image file to your PDA. Let me know if you have problems with these instructions. > 2) How can I add more Tanpura notes, so I can adjust it according to my > Sitar style. The simplest way would be for you to tell me exactly which notes you want, and I'll create a new release with this addition. Otherwise, if you feel like doing it yourself, here is how. In TaalPulse all compositions (lehra, drone & theka) are MIDI files. Checkout the source code with Subversion into the directory that contains the TaalPulse image: svn co https://taalpulse.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/taalpulse/trunk . After doing this you should have, among other things, a "snd" directory alongside the TaalPulse image. If you have a "trunk" directory instead, check that you included the final dot in the command above. Drone tracks are in snd/tracks/drone/ You will notice that there are two kinds of files: midi files and .srg files. The midi files are the ones actually used by TaalPulse. So you can add a midi file, then run TaalPulse and in the System page press the restart button: this will reload all tracks. The srg files are the "source files" for the midi files. They are actually a textual description of the tracks, if you look at them you will immediately understand how they work. I wrote a little program to convert .srg files to midi, which you can also find in the subversion repository under Sargam2Midi. This is a Java program, so you have to compile it, and then run the Convert class, giving as an argument the path to the directory that contains the tracks to convert. So you can either directly create new midi files, or write a .srg file and convert it (I find the latter much simpler). > 3) How do I add more lehras. Same as above! > > 4) Is there any way we can do meend, because this tool can actually > become a good teaching tool. > Again, same as above. TaalPulse understands midi pitch change events, and the srg to midi converter also has a syntax for meends. However, the bad news is that they do not sound nice at all... which is why none of the included lehras use meends. I guess the synthesizer I use is too basic, or maybe the samples are too low quality. If you know about digital music synthesizer and how to make meends sound good, do not hesitate to help! Hi I have been waiting for an application like this for a long long time. My Ustad/Guru will be very happy with it. I have a couple of questions (I am very familiar with linux and programming concepts, have no experience in smalltalk, but want my son, doing BSEE is learning it): 1) How do I modify startup defaults, for example my Teacher's gharana (Itawa) uses slightly higher tuning (A = 448 Hz) , and everyone pretty much uses "SA = C#". I would like to change the tuning to 448 Hz and root to C# instead of C.. 2) How can I add more Tanpura notes, so I can adjust it according to my Sitar style. 3) How do I add more lehras. 4) Is there any way we can do meend, because this tool can actually become a good teaching tool. Regards Iftikhar |
