Hi Arris, Thanks a lot for your message. Unfortunately the development of the new version of TaalPulse has halted. The sad thing is that the programming itself is mostly done, but it is actually very difficult for me to have the program running on embedded devices. So I think I will give up on this version. But I think I'll have another try with the Google's Android platform at some point, that should be much easier to target than Windows CE/Linux embedded. Regarding the iPhone, I think that to develop for it you need to pay Apple some fee, and then some more if you want to distribute your work through the AppStore, so it is not really an option for me, taking into account that I don't even have an iPhone :-) But I'm pretty sure the iPhone can be hacked to install Squeak onto it, right? Lastly, if you still want to make a donation after reading those not-really-exciting prospects, I've changed the donation button to a paypal one :-) Cheers, g On Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 6:05 AM, Arris Oliemans <aol...@gm...> wrote: > Hello Guillaume, > First of all, thank you for Taalpulse. Hello Guillaume, First of all, thank you for Taalpulse. I am using it very often with practising tabla. I tried to make a donation, but I don't have a soundforge or open ID account. Is there no easyer way like paypal to do a donation? I have read your message about the new version and why it is takin a while. Is there any way the users can support you to finish this version? For me, more lehara's and a more natural sound would be the most important improvements. The rest of the functionality is perfect. I just bought David Courtney's CD with lehara's and realised how more inspiring a good natural sound is. But it is only teental, three rag's and some fixed tempo's. To obtain such a sound quality with taalpulse would be perfect. About Taalpulse on the Iphone. There is a squeak version for the Iphone, but (as I understood) Apple won't allow to distribute this through the app store on it's own because then they would lose control over the applications running on squeak. They might accept the squeak together with this taalpulse image as a fixed bundle maybe. Have you tried this? thanks and regards, Arris |

Hi, it might work actually, what you need is a version of Squeak that runs on the iPhone, and it seems there is one: http://news.squeak.org/2008/06/11/squeak-on-the-iphone/ Tell us if it works! g On Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 11:39 PM, Varun Singh <var...@gm...> wrote: > Is there any work into porting this to an app on the iphone? Is there any work into porting this to an app on the iphone? I think this could be really useful |

sure, i'll try that next and let u know the results. but maybe somebody else with a little more knowledge about these things might do it with wine. it looked like a case of 'so near yet so far' thanks, nagaraj On Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 7:02 PM, Guillaume Pothier <gpo...@gm...> wrote: > Unfortunately I really don't know what can cause that, as I'm used at > all to wine. Unfortunately I really don't know what can cause that, as I'm used at all to wine. Hmmm... Indeed it seems audio in Squeak is broken on Hardy: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/squeak-vm/+bug/235146 You can make it work by compiling Squeak from source: Download http://ftp.squeak.org/3.9/unix-linux/Squeak-3.9-8.src.tar.gz Extract and follow the instructions in the README file below "for the impatient", but instead of "su root; make install", you have to do "sudo make install". if it is the first time you compile software on your machine, you probably need the gcc and make packages, which you can install using synaptic. Once you installed squeak, type "squeak -help" (note that the newly compiled VM is squeak, not squeakvm). In the "available drivers" section, you should see at least one of vm-sound-ALSA or vm-sound-OSS. If so, then you should be able to run TaalPulse. Tell me if it works. g On Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 2:12 PM, nagaraj tanksali <ham...@gm...> wrote: > thanks a lot ' > i could load the image allright, but still have a hithch. the play button > does not produce any sound. do i need to install anything more? Hi Nagaraj, Just uncompress TaalPulse anywhere within your home directory, actually it's not necessary that you place it in the Squeak installation directory. Then run Squeak giving it the path to the squeak.image file provided with TaalPulse. From a terminal, that would be (replacing <path> with the actual path where you uncompressed TaalPulse): squeakvm <path>/squeak.image Hope this helps, otherwise just ask again! To be honest with you I do not really know. The man that I bayed it from sad that was Windows 2003. I just fallowed the instructions in your side and downloaded the VM( which I do not know what means) Than the image, and I put it them together in external memory cart of the device. Now if I press "search", it finds it and works good. That is all I know))) I hope I was helpfully. Thank you again. Stefan P.S. Please write me if you have new upgrade with sounds and leharas. The only issue with this model is that it drains the batteries even when turned off (because actually, it never really turns off but rather goes to some standby mode). I don't know if more recent PDAs have the same problem. Hi everyone, I wanted to apologize for the lack of new releases of TaalPulse. I have not had a lot of time lately, and I haven't been playing tabla a lot either. Moreover, TaalPulse is currently written in a programming language (Smalltalk/Squeak) that I neither like nor master, so it's a bit hard to get motivated to improve the software. Several times in the last few months, when I had some free time, I said to myself "now, today I implement those missing features and make a new release", and each time, I spent a few hours trying to remember how the thing worked, and then abandonned... Writing software that can run on computers and PDAs alike, and under various operating systems, is not an easy task. At the time I wrote TaalPulse, Squeak was the only truly portable solution, and it still is to this day. However, it seems that a new solution is around the corner, with Qt 4.4 (http://trolltech.com/) soon available for free for all major platforms, including mobile ones. So I'm following it closely, and when it is out I'll rewrite TaalPulse using C++ and Qt. Although I haven't programmed in C++ for years I am confident it will be easier than Smalltalk, Qt being reputed for its ease of use. As a side effect of switching to C++, I'll probably use a real sound synthesis engine (http://fluidsynth.resonance.org/trac), so sound quality should be much better. I hope you still enjoy the now aging TaalPulse, and stay tuned for future developments! Cheers, g |
