$symname is supported by all the languages, see Typemaps.html. The 
typemaps are usually not generic across all the target languages as they 
all have different APIs for marshalling to from C/C++ to target 
language. There has been attempt to do hide these differences between a 
common API in the so-called UTL (scripting) languages though, but it has 
led to a really complicated input library.
