I had a problem a while back with -O, too. The -O flag is just a shortcut  
for a multitude of other flags, see swig -python --help to see which. In  
my case when I left out the -dirvtable flag my problem was solved.
So you can try to narrow the flag down further to get closer to the cause  
(and maybe using a debugger in addition).
