About bouncingball, yep, thats planed, but not for milestone1, would make some levels even more harder than they already are. -- WWW: http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/ JabberID: gr...@ja... I've played the first four levels... Looks great. A few comments: Tux walks out of the other side of the igloo at the ends of levels, and the music stops... need victory music. The sound needs to be changed for getting the FireTux power. An Ice Flower doesn't make sense if its Fire Power... maybe a chili pepper ;) or make him spit snowflakes ;) and the things he spits need to look like fireballs more. Some final suggestions/comments for today * Credits Needs updating! Also, some of the descriptions are a little... verbose. ;^) * Long delays When the app window first comes up, and when you first select the game map (e.g., start a new game, or continue a saved one), it seems like the app has hung. It'd be nice to throw up a "Please wait" and/or animated progress- or busy-bar. * Test levels segfault! I tried going to a few, and they all caused ST to segfault. :( Anyway, thx! -bill! |

Suggestion for the bouncing and helicopter snowballs... When you hit them, don't kill them, but instead turn them into normal walking snowballs... What do people think? -bill! |

Sorry ;) Okay, I just started running out of time (as the star powerup was going away). First off, there should be a 'fast' version of the star powerup music, to let me know that time is running out. Secondly, the fast version of the normal music just kept restarting, so it was an annoying drum bash over and over again... no actual music. When I finally died, the time-left started showing large negative numbers ;) (-807, -808, or somesuch) :) -bill! |

Ooh! Even more. :^) When Tux falls into the water, it should make a 'splash' noise, and there should be a little splash. (See Bobobot for an example :^) ) Hrm... also, looking at the "Smaller Bath" level, it seems I cannot kill the snowball by hitting the blocks underneath him! What's up with that!?!? :) -bill! |

A few other things... * I still wish the eggs would ALWAYs come out to the right :^) * I wish you could bounce the eggs from underneath * Apparently, even though I had the 'invincibility star', I was able to get clobbered by a knocked-out iceblock as he ricocheted past me * For some sound effects (like jump), we should only ever play it once at a time; interrupt the old sound if necessary, but try not to play the same sound many times at once (it just makes it really loud, and the end user might wonder "why is the jump sound loud here, but not there?") This happens in the case where Tux is big (2 blocks tall) and is standing right under an unbreakable block; e.g.: ##### <-- blocks T <-- Tux's head T <-- Tux's feet ========= <-- Ground That's it so far. Time to keep playing. ;) -bill! |

So, I checked out the latest Super Tux from CVS. Looking so much better! I love the map interface. :^) One thing I'd like to suggest, though... when you beat a level with a large or fire-capable Tux, when you start the next level, he should not start out small again! He should retain his powers. :^) Other than that, I've only gotten to level 2 (JUST started playing), and the game seems very smooth! It feels more 'playable' than last week. :^) I'm liking some of the enemies I'm seeing, too (bouncing snowballs, helicopter snowballs, etc.) :) Thx guys! You're totally resurrecting my poor old game. :^) -bill! |

Hi there, I like the name Penny, too... seems like there are no objections at all. :) Multiplayer mode would be nice but, as grumbel said, nothing to think of right now. (That is: To think of, yes, to actually work on, no. :-) ) I especially liked the idea of having a Tux vs. Nolok Mode; like a fighting game in a jump'n'run environment, that'd be cool! Imagine two players trying to jump on each others heads - that'd be a lot of fun, if well done! :) As for a second character, I think milestone2 should definitely have one. Having Penny as a sidekick, however, could be difficult considering the story, so Critterhead would definitely be an option - I kinda like the name "Critterhead", too... Penny could become a playable character as a reward for beating the game - but that's milestone2+ stuff again. What about the levels? Should I go through them again trying to make them easier? Or are they about milestone1-ready (after fixing a few bugs)? If there are still some spots you found almost impossible to beat, please tell me the locations and I'll try to fix them. Marek |

Looks a little like the Lemmings characters ;) Why not use Gown/Gwen/Penny as an alternate character? Ratchet On Apr 25, 2004, at 3:37 PM, Christopher A. A long time ago I developed a concept for an alternate playable character for all of those who are sick of always playing Tux in GNU/Linux games. It was just a quick sketch, but I could better develop it. (Yes, I do realize this is thinking a bit far ahead, but take a look anyway) I could easily develop this into a full bodied (alternate/multiplayer) character. http://lingocomic.com/gfx/goodies/supertux/critterhead.png Christopher Allan Webber | The bottom line On Sun, 2004-04-25 at 15:16, Bill Kendrick wrote: > On Sun, Apr 25, 2004 at 03:05:41PM -0500, C Ratchet wrote: > > OK... > > > > wasn't there a cooperative mode in some Mario games? > > Well, in /Mario Bros/ (pre-Super-Mario-Bros), the game was cooperative. > Of course, there was absolutely no scrolling, and the only change between > 'levels' was which enemies hopped out of the pipes. > > -bill! |

Tux ran into Nolok's throne room, frantically searching for his beloved. Alas, he found neither Penny nor Nolok there, but instead, another note. "Well done, Tux, well done. If you are reading this, you have removed my control over this icy fortress. But as you can see, your beloved Penny is not here. What you did not realize is that this is just one of my many fortresses, spread far across the lands! "Tux, your ambition is most honorable, but futile nonetheless. With every fortress you conquer of mine, I will escape to another, and take Penny with me. Do not be silly... it is best that you give up now." Tux was sadly leaving the room, when he felt something beneath his foot... an envelope, addressed to him! Inside was a roughly sketched map with fortresses drawn in various lands. On the corner of the map was Penny's signature, a drawing of the ice flower. Tux ran out of the fortress, map in hand. No, he decided, he would not give up. Penny was counting on him. |

I'm wondering if any thought has been put into making a multiplayer mode for Super Tux. I can think of a few options: Cooperative mode - 2 or more players cooperate on the same screen (on the same computer or thru a network) Competition mode - 2 or more players race to finish levels Tux vs. Nolok (is Nolok the name picked for the enemy?) - One player plays Tux, one plays Nolok and try to get each other.
