I've been having issues on Xubuntu 17.10 x64 also. Reverted back to 16.04 and everything seems to be working fine.
On 17.10 I tried both suggestions above - removing --tls-ext and defaultroute, but it still did not seem to work.
In all cases, my symptoms were that the vpn would connect quickly, without issue, but none of my traffic would actually run through the VPN, it was all being sent to eth0.
This is connecting to a VPN in Azure - not sure of the details.

Establishes fine using SSTPC from the command line but not when using the network manager plugin.
Running Ubuntu 17.10 x64
Any help would be appreciated. Below I have included the syslog.
