I think you have to set up the printer driver for Linux first. I 
assume you are printing via windows, which provides its own driver.


When you print the Invoice you will be using the Linux driver. To 
set this up go to webmin-system-printers etc. Not in SWAT!

only requirement is that you must be able to print from your browser 
(netscape, ie), since all printing is done through browsers File->Print 
menu.

For me the way to be sure (as a Postgresql beginner) that Pg was running
correctly was trying to use it with webmin (http://www.webmin.com/).
PLease make sure that you have created a Pg user (usually called =
postgres)
and that this user may create databases.

If you are root you would then do:

su - postgres

to change to the Pg user. You can NOT access Pg from root.

You would then see something like: [postgres@localhost pgsql]$

then just follow the manual by typing:

psql dbname < acc-Pg.sql

(where dbname ofcourse stands for the name of the database you have =
created
just before)

Obviously you can only do this when you are in de directory where you =
have
the file called acc-Pg.sql
For Mandrake 8.0 that should be: /var/www/sql-ledger/sql/

To leave the user postgres just type: exit on the commandline.

This happened to me too, it has something to do with permissions.
I can't remember the exact details but check the install
instructions again and make sure you have the permissions
correctly set.

I followed the instructions for setting up the database section.  But I get 
the following error.

Am I filling in one of the fields wrong or should I be a certain user besides 
root to setup a new user.

When you are done translating the chart of accounts send it to me and I'll
post it on the website.

The link codes are of no use for the user and are used internally to build
a dynamic system.

There are some french users but most users don't take the time of day to
fill in the survey form and tell others that they are using it.

The form is at http://sql-ledger.simtax.ca/misc/survey.html

It's not a registration form but only to show to other users that the
software can be used in country such and such.

Question about some links in chart of accounts

Hi,

In the colums calles 'link' in the table 'chart' I see references to: =
IC_sale, IC_income, CT_tax and a few others like that.
All the AP_amount and others I understand as they refer to the tables AR =
and AP.
But the ones decribed above I do not understand.
As I am now making a French chart of accounts (I seem to become the only =
user with a French company) I would appreciate if someone could explain =
it to me.

Thanks for the response. Picking up you points here are my answers

 1-  PostgreSQL is running well and I can access sql-ledger files
through pgaccess (thanks to your -i flag positionning tip)
 2 - Pg driver seems to be correctly installed (When I first install
DBI-Pg I had an error message, but after removing the DBI- component
that type of error has dissapeared)
 3 - see 1
 4 - I have been following installation instructions since version 1.2.9
but I have not been successful (only since version 1.4.5 that I can have
been able to get a login and admin screens. Infact I have posted my
problems several times, and inspite of good intentions of trying to help
me, none of these have been successful in solving my problem)
 5 - I have been following this mailing list for quite a while now and
try to read every tip for on installation but no success
 6 - I will send my last error messages tonight

Hmm, how do I do that? I have no good knowledge of psql organization.
WHat I did was to "cp" /var/lib/pgsql/data/base/db1 to var/lib/pgsql/data/base/db2
Is that enough?

I get the error 
ERROR: Relation 'tax' does not exist SELECT chart_id FROM tax WHERE chart_id = 10004
very early in the process, when editing the tax account.

But I see some general problems in this kind of upgrade.
You need to have good knowledge of sql, and psql, and then
do quite some work in the hand. I don't understand why this could
not be a perl script, where you enter the tax account numbers in
a form, and then it does all of this for you. And then it could
also run the update.pl script on demand.

On the other hand, I am amzed that it can be done.
That is, it is possible to change the underlying data structure
of the db in a well,defined way. The Tax stuff is some add ons.
Some of the critics here say that the architecture of SL is too simple,
and that you cannot then build on SL. But with what is now demonstrated,
another strategy, using SL now, and then make an upgrade when/if a better
data model becomes available.

An upgrade like this just has to be better supported, eg by having
some programs directly available from the web user interface.
If not, then SL is an accounting system for programmers only.

Dieter, what do you think? Could the next database update be 
fully supported by a web interface? Or are there problems in this?
Could be done as a special page from the admin page.

(are there checks in the database for which version it is?
The version could stored in a table.)

The customertax etc. are new database tables that are required to support the multiple tax accounts available in 1.4.
You must add the items to the new tables by hand. If you currently only need one level of tax for all your 
services/products and clients then I believe you only need to populate the customertax table by hand.

First, back-up your sql-ledger postgres database.

Assuming you have already run the script 'update.sql' in the sql directory of the 1.4.x distribution against your sql-
ledger database, here is an example for simple GST/VAT:

look at the 'tax' table of your sql-ledger database and get the value from the 'chart_id' column for your main GST tax.
look at the 'customer' table and get the first relevant value from the 'id' column.
enter this customer 'id' value into the 'customer_id' column of the new 'customertax' table.
enter the 'chart_id' from the 'tax' table into the 'chart_id' column of the same row of the new 'customertax' table.

repeat the above for every customer to which this tax rate applies.

In sql-ledger go to the 'Edit Customer' screen for each customer to which you supply a taxable service/part and 
check the checkbox labled 'Taxable _ GST'.

In sql-ledger go to each service/part you supply and check the checkbox at the bottom of the 'Edit Service' screen 
that is labled something like '2310-GST'.

I have some trouble converting a SL database from 1.2 to 1.4

The update doc says:

How is this done? With some sql statements?

And why is this necessary? I think one should be very careful
with doing changes to the database of an existing account
database - it could potentuallty hurt your accounts.

Well, I should maybe keep quiet about things I don't know about - my
company deals with "Services" only (if I ever buy goods for my clients
then I simply pass on the bill without charging extra), and thus I haven't
really understood the concept and wordings concerning goods... :-)

I'm pretty sure COGS means exactly what the words say.  I.e., you buy 
a dozen widgets from your distributor at $10 each.  You sell 8 of 
them.  Your COGS is $80.  The other 4 are accountable as inventory.

I guess SQL-Ledger first designed to link bying and selling with goods.
Later on support for "virtual" goods was added - things like "support",
"Service" and "Consultancy" that is not stored in a room with the risk of
running low on amounts...

I looked it up and found the term "Cost of goods sold". in my danish
translation I made it something like "Sales expenses", but I think it

Debet or Credit transactions.

It is used in ca.pl, where I found this:

    $total += $ca->{balance};

    $drcr = " ";
    $balance = " ";
    if ($ca->{balance} > 0) {
      $balance = sprintf("%.2f", $ca->{balance});
      $drcr = $locale->text('CR');
    }
    if ($ca->{balance} < 0) {
      $balance = sprintf("%.2f", -$ca->{balance});
      $drcr = $locale->text('DR');
    }

In other words, you could translate it to "Debet" and "Credit" if those
are the terms used in the Netherlands (and Belgium).

(I'll correct this in the danish translation as well...)

and buying...

I think I found out what GIFI-code stands for (at least what the apprevation 
stands for).

General Index of Financial Information (GIFI

As a corporation, you have to include financial statements when you file a T2 
Corporation Income Tax Return. Financial statements usually consist of a 
balance sheet, a statement of retained earnings, an income statement, and 
often, notes to financial statements. We at CCRA are introducing a new method 
for filing this information: the General Index of Financial Information 
(GIFI). When you use the GIFI, you will not need to submit your financial 
statements with your return and schedules.

What is the GIFI?
The GIFI is an extensive list of financial statement items where each item has 
a unique code (e.g., cash is 1001).

Our goal in developing the GIFI was to provide a list of financial statement 
items that would allow your corporation to report its unique combination of 
accounts. The GIFI lets you select items you usually show on your financial 
statements, so you can give the same level of detail that you report now.

I have not used sql-ledger yet (I have been trying since ver. 1.2.9 but have not
succeeded to make it work!!!!), but as Accountant I would guess

COGS = Cost of Goods Sold
CR = Credit
DR = Debit

For Service and GIFI I would leave for Americans/Canadians to answer !

I'am busy translating the all-file to Dutch including the templates. I've done 
about 70% so far, and come up with the following questions. I hope someone can 
give me the answers so I can finish this translation and post it to the 
developers.
Service => I think you mean something like a description for hours?
COGS => Think this is a apprevation for buying some goods??? Where does it 
stand for???
CR => ???
DR => ???
Deposit => Is this something you receive???
GIFI Code => ???

Can anyone give me some more explanation on this words in more than a short 
sentence so I can make a correct translation to Dutch.

I believe very strongly in stupid questions. But also I sometimes find the
answer "That question you can answer yourself - here's how..."
appropriate.
