I have a business looking to move to SL, everything is looking good, and sorry I know this must have been asked once before... However... =20 In just about every accounting app in the customer feild once you start typing the customer name it creates a short list of the client... Can SL be setup to do this? =20 e.g. A client comes in to purchace bottled water, clerk asks clients name, client replies Johnston, clerk types in Joh and notices on the short list that two names are female, and client is male, so client must be Berry or Dave, clerk asks for the first name, and all is well. Interesting enough in other apps it would also list all users with first name John. =20 =20 |

For some time I have been searching for a Postgresql backend for Virtuemart instead of the MySQL one that comes with the package. Any solutions anyone? At least it would be easier to synchronize VMart and SL that way. The advantage with Joomla/VMart is that it has a very Customer Friendly Web Frontend with Product and Price display etc. I find the Product Group and Subgroup and CSV-upload features very handy . However this app lacks the transaction solidity that SL provides. However if SL could incorporate features similar to Joomla, this might be best - that way DB integrity would be assured. Ken |

Thanks -i found a semi-solution, which is to simply change the heading on my invoice templates to reverse the bill to and ship to address.. This way, I can make a new location and put the billing info in the shipping field on the "Add Customer" page.. Since I'm the only one using it, it works for me... ANd when I look through the customer list, it shows them the way I need it.. Hopefully, someone has a proper fix for this.. Unfortunately SL only supports a single "Ship To" so you're functionally limited to two locations per customer. It wouldn't surprise me if someone has written a patch to remedy that though - anyone? This may be a simple one, but want to make sure it is done correctly. I have a customer with multiple locations, but a single billing address.. What is the proper way to enter these? I ask because I tried a few ways, and I ended up having the same customer listed multiple times in my "customer" list, because the customer list only shows the billing information.. help? thanks, -myk |

arthur, why use dapper? I have installed sql-ledger using Adept on Kubuntu Dapper. Going to http://localhost/sql-ledger/admin.pl I have been able to create a user. However, when I go to the SQL-Ledger/Database Administration page and attempt to do anything I get the following error: FATAL: role "sql-ledger" does not exist. sql-ledger comes up automatically as the user. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks for the help. Arthur |

All, I kept at it and finally got some of what I wanted from gnc20.perl. I've pasted below a recipe for what I did; perhaps it can save some time and frustration for others. In gnucash select File, then Export, then Export Accounts.Name the file gnucash.xml and select a folder to save it in. I saved it in /tmp, where I had already placed gnc20.perl. This will simplify things. Click on the Export button. Go to where you've saved the export and gnc20.perl. I made gnc20.perl executable (chmod 755...) but perl is an interpreted language so I don't think this is necessary. Then do: perl ./gnc20.perl and the output should stream by on the screen. Next, repeat the command but redirect that output to a new COA: perl ./gnc20.perl > foobar-chart.sql This should work fine. If it doesn't check permissions and ownerships; but if you're using a UNIX or variant you should already know all about that stuff, it's usually the first thing to bite a newbie user. Move foobar-chart.sql to your sql-ledger directory and place it in the sql directory. Adjust the permissions and ownership to match the other *-chart.sql files in there. Log in to sql-ledger as admin and create a new dataset using foobar-chart.sql (it should appear in the list) and edit your usual user to use that dataset. foobar-chart.sql is just a list of sql insert statements that will be used by the database to create the various tables in the new dataset. That's it, alas. I was hoping it would magically import the actual data as well but it doesn't look like that is the case. You'll likely have lots of account re-numbering to do too if you didn't give your gnucash accounts numbers; like I didn't. The script looks for gnucash.xml for its input file but you can edit that easily to look for any file, it's right up by the top of gnc20.perl. Look for "gnucash.xml". I'm not going to clean up my COA until I can import all my data. That way everything will be the same numbering scheme (if gnc20.perl and any future data import script think alike.) Until then I'll stick with gnucash and see what happens. In the meantime, sql-ledger looks pretty nice and I can always psql right into the tables themselves, something I understand much better than XML, or perl. HTH somebody. r |

Yes, you'll have two items on your check run referring > to the same invoice number, but it works well for me. I had the reverse issue (tracking pre-pay disounts for customers) and solved it this way: (1) create COA income account (in 4000 range) for discounts (2) define a part CREDIT as service and give it that income account (3) use that part # on invoice line item, but with negative amount. A nice side effect is that when you run an income statement, the discounts show up in parentheses in the income statement, which (for my case) was a more accurate statement. You could just as easily have it show up as an expense. Just use a 5000 serices account in step (1) above and mark the expense account as an inventory tracking item. m |

oh that would be soooo nice. There is a guy who wrote an inventory program that unfortunately is on his site only, but it allows us to do all kinds of inventory stuff ( peninventory.com) and he's going to be working on a vm integration module for it. So with that and sql-ledger and this syncro we'd be in great shape here as long as the stuff from the netherlands knows how to handle US style taxation properly. The laptops only original purporse was GPS navigation and email while traveling. It has since come up that it would be great to use it also as a POS system while at the shows. Thats why I was thinking of having some part of SQL-Ledger on the laptop. I can see your point about having it be the server completely. Do you know if "Damn Small Linux" will handle sql-ledger? I ask because the drive space on the laptop is very limited. Its a lowly ADM-K6 381mhz system with 192mb of ram. and a 4G HD. It Does have a dvd drive so I could I believe run a "live" variant of linux and store the data ONLY on the hd. Another alternative I suppose would be to purchase a USB drive for it but I think that would be fairly expensive. I don't know what the bare minimum I would need to make it function as a nix server and still retain at least windows 98 on it for the GPS. Thanks Troy > |

All, I've been struggling trying to get this script to work. It looks like serious perl coding but it's utterly opaque. The file it looks for appears to have to be called "gnucash.xml", but what file is that? My gnucash file? My gnucash foobar.xac file? An export of my gnucash file? And what and whare is the output? Only once have I been able to get this to work and all it seemed to do is create a COA using my gnucash account names, but no actual data was loaded. Does this script not do this? I have been unable to repeat even that meager result by renaming any of those versions of my data to "gnucash.xml". I am currently using GN-2.0.5 on FreeBSD-6.2 and postgreSQL-8.2.3. I have found a lot of posts from people looking to get their data into sql-ledger from gnucash; I have ten years worth myself, but I don't intend to walk away from it and start over. gnc20.perl is my ticket, but I'm a user, not a perl monger. It needs to "just work", and with some indication that is has done so. Or some indication that it hasn't. Or some indication of what it's looking for. An empty install of sql-ledger works fine, so I know I have the db and apache stuff screwed down. I just need to get the data in there. Is there a recipe for that? Anywhere? frustrated regards, r |

My solution...your mileage may vary. I've created a G/L account (mine is under COGS) called Discounts Earned. After you key the vendor invoice for the full amount, key an AP Transaction selecting the Discounts Earned account using a negative dollar amount. Yes, you'll have two items on your check run referring to the same invoice number, but it works well for me. There is a solution upcoming here in the Netherlands where there will be a syncronisation script between joomla/virtuemart and sql-ledger as well as sugar-crm. In a bout a month time they will show me a demo. I am not sure if this company will keep this code opensource. However they said they intended to. If things look promising I will reply again Luc Matt Jackson wrote: > PARTIALLY OFF TOPIC > > Hey man! > > No comfort here, except to say that you have asked what I've been putting > off wondering, since I run Joomla! with VirtueMart as well for my site-based > sales. > > I have actually been looking around for alternatives, because I am tired of > fooling with odd SEO, flaky checkout and such on VirtueMart, wondering if > there is a simpler, clearer alternative out there. > > For example, I have been very interested in Volusion, especially if it can > offer me just turnkey, guaranteed rock-solid checkout (that doesn't fail or > give errors at random times to my customers) and guaranteed best-in-class > SEO and marketing help. PARTIALLY OFF TOPIC Hey man! No comfort here, except to say that you have asked what I've been putting off wondering, since I run Joomla! with VirtueMart as well for my site-based sales. I have actually been looking around for alternatives, because I am tired of fooling with odd SEO, flaky checkout and such on VirtueMart, wondering if there is a simpler, clearer alternative out there. For example, I have been very interested in Volusion, especially if it can offer me just turnkey, guaranteed rock-solid checkout (that doesn't fail or give errors at random times to my customers) and guaranteed best-in-class SEO and marketing help. Sucks that it isn't FREE FREE FREE, but hey, I am learning you can't trip over a dollar to save a dime. I am tired of fooling around...I have lost so many sales due to flaky, too long, error-prone checkout. SEO has actually not been too too terrible, but it is still inconsistent and gives me the "grass is greener on the other side of the fence" feeling that there is something that is a better VALUE out there, see? Anyhow, back on track, I would be very interested in what you are interested in. Even a pan-solution solution, a generic import that could be reworked from csv exports and such, would be sweet. I tried the generic SQL-Ledger import thing and it didn't work for me. Kept failing out. I wonder if we could pool some monetary resources and get this added to the project on a faster-track basis. Anyhow, just putting my vote in and saying HI to a fellow Joomla/VirtueMart user! I have a similar mixed bag. If your server doesn't need to be online 24/7, the lapdog will do fine. As far as importing data, you need info from someone else.. I've never needed to do it ;-) It seems to me that the laptop being POS and server makes things relatively easy. Then when you plug your laptop into your lan you have access to everything you need. I'm assuming that your joomla/ecommerce is off line when you are at shows anyway, and that it's all installed on the laptop?? Or did i miss something? > My thoughts are this. > I would like to be able to have a central place where my accounting > takes place that is accessible from any of the other machines. > I'm thinking the laptop would be a good candidate for this as it will > need to be used when we go to craft shows and such to sell our > products. Hello, this has probably come up before but I can't find the answer I'm looking for. I have a mixed OS environment consisting of the following computers (Linux server - Kubuntu server edition - household lan ) Mac G3 - 10.3.9 Windows XP Home Compaq Presario 1685 Laptop ( non-wireless but does have ethernet ) this will be the GPS and POS machine and finally another linux server that my websites are hosted on in another city where I do NOT have root access nor postgresql capability. My thoughts are this. I would like to be able to have a central place where my accounting takes place that is accessible from any of the other machines. I'm thinking the laptop would be a good candidate for this as it will need to be used when we go to craft shows and such to sell our products. I doubt we will have wireless capability because most are in farm country. I need it to store the credit card processing information and sale history, print a receipt/invoice for the customer. I use joomla as my CMS and Virtuemart as my ecommerce software. My ideal scenario is that sql-ledger would be able to import via csv or some other method my days activities ( virtuemart uses mysql ) and updates its accounting accordingly. Lacking that we don't do so much business via the net that we couldn't enter them by hand for now. but when we come home from shows, we need to be able to synchronize the data thats on the laptop with the server. ( if its not the main machine already ). Similarly when we are in the office at home I want to be able to access the sql-ledger program from any of the desktop machines or laptop be it xp or mac or even the linux clients. I don't know the best way to install/build sql-ledger to fit my needs, or if it really will. I'm not very good at accounting and really am tired of looking. I would really appreciate any and all help. Thanks Troy |
