Hi,

I have a working maven 2 project for Spring that doesn't interfere
with current ant buld. At least it worked with m1, now I'm having a
hard time keeping it up to date for different problems I found (see my
reported issues in jira). Last one is with asm 2 used in some parts
conflicting with asm 1 included in cglib.

Not sure if you saw this post, but Carlos Sanchez offered to assist with 
setting up Spring with Maven 2 (see 
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.java.springframework.user/7552/match=maven). 
Carlos is a Maven committer, and has a solid track record of 
supporting/managing the Acegi Security Maven build. If there is interest 
in adopting Maven 2, you might like to take advantage of Carlos' offer 
to help. On a related topic, Spring Rich has recently adopted Maven 2 
for its build system (being managed by Geoffrey De Smet), and Acegi 
Security will be moving to it (from Maven 1.0.2) after our 1.0.0 final 
release is out of the way.

[Springframework-developer] Named parameters for SimpleJdbcTemplate?

I'm looking at adding support for named parameters to  
SimpleJdbcTemplate and need some opinions from an API perspective.   
The code changes involved are straight forward but I don't want to  
turn the SimpleJdbcTemplate into a ComplexJdbcTemplate.

To start with we have a couple of options:

	- add support to the existing class
	- don't bother with named parameter support for this class at all

The scond one would mean that all named parameter support would only  
be available from NamedParameterJdbcTemplate without any of the Java  
5 features.  But this:

         List<Beer> l = simpleJdbcTemplate.query(
                 "select * from beers where id in ( :ids )",
                 beerMapper,
                 argMap);

would be kind of nice to support.

There are 8 methods in the current implementation taking an  
'Object... args' as the last argument.  We could simply double that  
adding a corresponding method taking a Map for the arguments.  This  
is where I'm leaning currently.   Another option would be to leave  
the API as is but detect the type of the first object in the  
'Object... args' array is. If it's a Map do the named parameter  
support.  Don't like this since the API does not give much help to  
the user here.

Couple of additional issues:

- What if you pass a query like "select * from beers where id = :id"  
to a method without named parameter support.  We could just accept  
named parameters everywhere and simply replace them with '?'  
placeholders before executing the query.  Some Oracle JDBC drivers  
actually supports this usage as well.

- There is no convenient way to set options on the JdbcTemplate if  
you use the SimpleJdbcTemplate - like nativeJdbcExtractor or  
fetchSize.  Should we expose these methods or leav it as is forcing  
the user to inject a JdbcTemplate with these settings specified?

I've been examining the JPA support in 2.0 and i have a few issues  
around the JpaDaoSupport class.  There are two ways of configuring  
this class - either you provide an EntityManager or an  
EntityManagerFactory.  Which one you provide dictates what  
JpaDaoSupport methods you can effectively use later on in your code.  
This, I think, couples your code to configuration choices.  If you  
provide an EntityManagerFactory then the getEntityManager method  
returns null and you are forced to use getEntityManagerFactory  
method.  If you provide an EntityManager, then it's the other way  
around, you must use the getEntityManager method since  
getEntityManagerFactory returns null.

This EntityManagerFactory/EntityManager issue provides a non- 
intuitive split in the API usage and will confuse the heck out of  
everyone.  We need to come up with some strategy to make it easier to  
directly use an EntityManager instance for both configuring this  
class and for gaining access to an instance of EntityManager that  
will participate in Spring managed transactions regardless of how the  
JpaDaoSupport was configured.

I would prefer to have a solution where we can do the right thing  
behind thes scenes instead of simply returning a null.  We should  
either return a "managed" object of the type requested or throw and  
InvalidApiUsage type exception.

The best place to start is forums, spring reference documentation (for 
the particular subsystem that you're interested in) and of course 
reading the source code/unit tests to gain an understanding of how 
particular subsystem is implemented. Then the next step would be to look 
at jira, find any interesting issues and try to supply patches, etc.

* added VelocityLayoutViewResolver, a convenience subclass of =
VelocityViewResolver with support for VelocityLayoutView

FYI: The next scheduled Spring release is 2.0 M3, which will be the last =
milestone before 2.0 RC1. If you aren't following our 2.0 milestones =
already, I recommend to give the upcoming 2.0 M3 a try and let us know =

yeah, tried that: that's what I meant when I said I'd set system properti=
es,
but forgot to say which system properties I meant!  It didn't work for me=
 -
NPE's got generated at some point but will need to check where later, I'v=

access to that machine at present.
